THE GIRL + THE BULL is a cool neighborhood restaurant at the end of Aguirre Avenue in BF Homes and the first baby of passionate couple Gab Bustos, head chef and known as The Bull, and Thea de Rivera, who is The Girl.
The Aguirre Food Street has already helped launch resto superstars in 2013 like SENSEI SUSHI by Chef Bruce “Broosy” Ricketts and has led the trend in Cupcake Cafes with Larcy’s Cupcakery Cafe.
The Girl + The Bull is another noteworthy resto on Aguirre and is proof that 21-year olds can rock the resto scene with a comfort food concept that every foodie raves about. This is how real passion tastes on your plate.
You’ve got to check this out in BF!

I like the thrill of hunting for this resto and a small sign congratulates you for finding it.
The Katipunan has a soulful article, “Charging Forward“, on the inside story of why it is called The Girl + the Bull.
Photography + Food + Art + Young college servers are what’s in store for you at The Girl + The Bull.
THE GIRL + THE BULL MENU: Starters, Mains | Dessert, Cocktails | Beer, Wine | No Booze
The menu changes depending on what’s available and on the mood of the chef. I hate that the Buttermilk Fried Chicken is only available on weekends.
The resto interiors are put together nicely and seemlessly without trying hard to be artsy.
It has bad acoustics though, so you can imagine how noisy it could get when big groups and families with kids start to passionately talk with one another. Not to mention eavesdropping on discussions even if you’re not trying to.
Most of the corners are instagrammable and have different stories to tell.
✮ WILD ARUGULA SALAD (P265 +10% service charge). Apple, bacon, egg, parmesan, truffle vinaigrette.
The arugula was good, not too bitter, and with a nice truffle vinaigrette flavor. It’s best eaten together with bits of the bacon, egg, and apple to experience all the complementing flavors.
TRUFFLE FRIES (P180 +10% service charge). Parmesan, cumin mayonnaise.
The fries are homemade and a bit payatot. I like the truffle flavor and the cumin (think Indian curry) mayonnaise but it kind of influences the taste of the rest of your food later on.
The main entrees take some time so it’s best to order these fries while you wait.
✮ KOREAN BBQ RIB EYE (P450 +10% service charge). Kimchi fried rice, egg.
This is our new comfort food favorite — Tapsilog, Korean style! 🙂
The meat is tender, cooked medium well, and marinated with a balanced BBQ sauce.
Love the kimchi rice, which wasn’t too spicy and with just enough flavor to keep you eating one spoonful after another.
✮ WILD ROCK: INFAMOUS GOOSE (glass – P220 +10% service charge)
They have a good taste in wines. I like the Wild Rock Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region, which has a clean elegant taste and an citrusy aroma that tickles your senses.
100% BEEF BURGER (P365 +10% service charge). Sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, Russian dressing, brioche.
They recommended the burger for the kids. The burger meat was cooked well done though, which made it tough.
I like the thick burger patty with caramelized onions, a juicy tomato slice, and just the right amount of mayonnaise.
✮ BLACKENED SNAPPER (P395 +10% service charge). Sweet potato mash, buerre blanc, spinach oil, frisee, tarragon vinaigrette.
The fish was equally good, swimming in different sauces and flavors.
Reminded me of a delicious meal in Hill Station in Baguio.
✮ FAUX TWIX (P160 +10% service charge). Sea salt.
Don’t go home without eating their signature homemade twix! 🙂
It’s a cookie base with condensed milk, chocolate, and lots of sea salt. (Tip: ask them to lessen the sea salt…a little bit should be enough)
Best eaten with your bare hands so you can lick the condensed milk and chocolate off your fingers! 🙂
The restaurant is co-located with Casa Alfonso, the B&B place owned by the owner’s mom.
The interior architecture is also done well. I can’t believe such a place exists on Aguirre street!
The rooms are minimalistic, simple but cozy.
The restrooms are clean. This would be a nice place to stay in the BF area.
There’s also a two single bed option instead of one queen bed.
The top floor houses the events place called Glass Box. Check out Jane’s post for more details: Sugar Spice and Everything Nice | The Girl + The Bull
CASA ALFONSO Bed & Breakfast

Rates: P3,800 for 2 persons, P3,500 for 1 person
It’s definitely worth the trip to drive all the way to THE GIRL + THE BULL to experience lively art, yummy comfort food, and fresh young service.
I recommend ordering the KOREAN BBQ RIB EYE while you sip on WILD ROCK: INFAMOUS GOOSE and finish off with some FAUX TWIX for dessert. Budget is P750/head. 🙂
I do hope they improve the acoustics of the place a bit.
I would love to meet The Girl + The Bull one day and congratulate them for showing Manila how to execute a foodie rave-worthy neighborhood restaurant. I can’t wait for their next resto concept! 🙂
