OLD MANILA at The Peninsula Manila is now proudly run by Filipino Chef Allan Briones. They advocate a 50% local/50% international ingredients philosophy, delivering a “sophisticated market” menu to their discerning clientele.
The CCA-alumni worked and trained under legendary Chef Marco Pierre White in London, who trained notable chefs like Mario Batali and Gordon Ramsay. He worked for prestigious hotel restaurants in Dubai before coming home to Manila to work at The Peninsula Manila in Banquet before being promoted from within to head Old Manila.
Here’s our firsthand experience of Chef Allan Briones’ fine dining cuisine in Old Manila…
LIO is one of the best places to escape to with the family this 2017. A master-planned sustainable Ayala estate development just around the corner from El Nido town in Palawan, it is the perfect place to get access to the El Nido isles in Bacuit Bay.
Palawan enjoys comfortable weather all year round with occasional heavy rains on the islands. It’s good to go anytime, but you may want to consider making the trip during the Lio Beach Festival, which happens on the Independence Day weekend nearest June 12.
Here’s our guide to enjoying a family staycation and the beach festival experience at Lio…
Located atop a limestone cliff on the Southern edge of Panglao, Amorita Resort Bohol offers the best, unobstructed view of Alona Beach and the Cebu Strait. Its secluded location allows guests to enjoy the eco-friendly and luxurious resort in peace.
Amorita Bohol is one of the four properties handled by the One-of-Collection hotel management group. The group promises to deliver one-of-a-kind experiences to guests in all their properties. Our stay at Amorita was undeniably one-of-a-kind.
“Amorita” translates to little darling in Spanish–our sweet and intimate stay in the resort undoubtedly lived up to this namesake.
Taiwan has always had a special place in my heart. I remember visiting Taipei 10 years ago, back when Taiwan was still under everyone’s radar and Taipei 101 was still the tallest building in the world.
I remember traveling around this tiny island nation that has a little bit of everything, from mountainous landscapes and beautiful beaches to a sprawling nightlife in the metropolis. Not to mention the country has four seasons, meaning it gets hot during summer and it can snow on some parts during winter.
WATCH: All this combined makes Taiwan the perfect travel destination for Filipinos.

When Rikki and Beng Dee started, they had a simple dream as two 19-year olds: to feed their newborn son as they were both still studying. Rikki sold his car and put up Chin Chin on Pasay Road where they specialized in Chinese food–with Rikki waiting on tables and Beng doing the cashier’s work. Chin Chin was their pet name for their son Eric Thomas. Their bestseller, fish head noodle soup, was well-loved by a then unknown Henry Sy, Sr. He would frequently call up their restaurant after a long day at work and ask to keep it open so he could eat.
One day in 1987, Eric recounts, Henry Sy, Sr. tells his father Rikki, “You are a great guy, hardworking. I am opening a mall and I want you to be a tenant.” The mall that opened 30 years ago was SM North EDSA. The rest is history.

Blooming tulips signal that spring has arrived! But in Toyama, these beautiful flowers bloom throughout the year!
The Tonami Tulip Gallery is the only facility in the world where you can appreciate tulips in all four seasons. The amazing facility is home to a museum and garden where you can experience the mysteries and secrets of their tulip bulbs.
It also annually hosts the Tonami Tulip Fair, a simple event that started in 1952 in an experimental agricultural field station and has now grown into Japan’s number one most anticipated flower festival. It is held in Toyama from late April to early May every year, featuring 2.5 million tulips blooming in over 600 varieties on the extensive grounds totaling to 16-hectares of land.
Delicious-looking, life-like ramen, sushi, steak, and beer. Have you ever noticed food replicas of these things on display while walking along restaurants and shops in Japan? It’s said that 60% of these replicas are made here in Gujo City.
At Sample Kobe, visitors can get a first-hand experience of watching artisans make food models and also try creating one of their own! It’s a fun, affordable experience and a great souvenir you can take home to your family and friends!

HOTBOX KITCHEN is a rustic Canadian comfort food restaurant by Canadian couple Chef Evan and Michelle Corby, located in the neighborhood of San Juan. They serve New American comfort food and of course, the quintessential Poutine.
Hotbox is a term used to refer to an enclosed space with trapped smoked, a reference to how they smoke their own bacon and sausages.
We tried Hotbox Kitchen with our long time friends, Francis and Ivan, and here’s what we think…
