KILKEA CASTLE: A Castle Birthday for My Queen (and our First Impressions of Ireland)! @KilkeaCastle

TBEX Summit-17.jpg

In Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland (one hour away from Dublin), you’ll find KILKEA CASTLE. It’s a majestic 12th century castle that’s been transformed into a luxury hotel.

We celebrated Rache’s birthday in this beautiful place–befitting of my queen and love of my life–on our first-ever trip to Ireland. It was really magical and definitely one of the best travel experiences we’ll cherish forever.

Here is a photo essay of our stay at Kilkea Castle…

The-Kilkea-Castle-Experience

Once the medieval stronghold of the Fitzgeralds, earls of Kildare, the Castle was built by Hugh de Lacy for one of Strongbow’s Norman Noblemen, Walter de Riddlesford. Today it stands proudly ready to extend a five-star welcome to travelers from around the globe.

Set on 180 acres of its own wonderful woodland, gardens and golf course, Kilkea Castle enchants from the moment you drive down the beech-lined avenue overlooking the Killeshin Hills, only minutes from the ancient Mullaghreelan Woods.” (Kilkea Castle Website)

BERLIN: The Fall of the Berlin Wall–25th Year Anniversary! @VisitBerlin

Berlin Wall-19.jpg
The Berlin Wall or Berliner Mauer is a barrier built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) that separated East Germany from West Germany from August 13, 1961 until its fall on November 9, 1990. It prevented the defection of the people from East to West and instantly separated the families upon its erection.

It’s amazing to see Berlin 25 years after the fall of the wall, reflect on this recent history, and celebrate this triumph with our brothers and sisters in Berlin!

TIM RAUE is a two-star Michelin Chef and is considered as one of the best Chefs in Berlin. He opened his flagship store, Tim Raue, together with his wife Marie-Anne last July 2010, serving Asian-inspired cuisine. It is the top 78 restaurant in the San Pellegrino list.

Tim also opened two new restaurants in 2013 in Berlin–Sra Bua by Tim Rau (Japanese-Thai cuisine) in Hotel Aldon Kempinski, and La Soupe Populaire (German cuisine) in the Studio House of Bötzow Brewery, along Prenzlauer Allee.

We tried Tim Raue restaurant with fashion blogger Camille Co and her awesome sister Charlotte Co on our last day in Berlin, and here’s a photo essay of our experience…

BERLIN: White Trash Fast Food – “Exotic food just like Mama used to make!”

White Trash Berlin-71.jpg

What can you expect from a restaurant named “White Trash Fast Food“? While the place sounds very touristy and kitschy, their marketing is irresistible. I first saw the cool ad for WTFF when I landed at Berlin airport and I was immediately interested to check it out.

Our guide, Matthias, highly recommended it as a first timer’s taste of the night life in Kreuzberg. Here’s our White Trash Fast Food experience in Berlin…

BERLIN: TEUFELSBERG–Abandoned Cold War-era Spy Station on top of Devil’s Mountain!

Tuefelsberg Berlin-139.jpg

I must admit, when I saw Teufelsberg in the itinerary as the culminating activity for our last day in Berlin, I expected it to be boring.

But the charm of visiting the once abandoned building that has been turned into one of the largest outdoor gallery parks grows on you, then you start to appreciate how different Berlin is. (Read “How Berlin has ruined living anywhere else“.)

Here’s a photo essay on our tour of Teufelsberg
