LA PICARA: This Awesome Spanish Restaurant at One Bonifacio High Street

First, La Pícara, pronounced as la pí-cara (with emphasis on the pi), means the mischievious or naughty.

It’s a Spanish restaurant with Tropical Cuban/Central American-inspired design that transports you from the city into an oasis in the center of the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The food was surprisingly very good, Spanish food with a naughty playful twist of Filipino ingredients or Asian interpretation but still classy elegant Spanish food.

We tried it three times in the last few weeks before their grand opening. Here’s what we loved that you should try:

Mövenpick: Your Next New Boracay Staycation

Having started as a humble yet revolutionary restaurant chain in Switzerland, Movenpick has since gone on to become one of the world’s most trusted and recognizable brands today.  The Swiss chain, which has successfully branched into the hotel and resort business, has prime locations at some of the best destinations in the world.

Boracay is probably one of (if not) the busiest tourist destinations in SE Asia.  Having won numerous awards for Best Island in the World, it’s a no brainer to find some of the world’s top resort chains here, carving out a name for themselves in a market that is incredibly competitive.

Enter Movenpick.

The world-class resort is perfect for families and anyone wanting to experience everything Boracay has to offer with the added bonus of privacy.  Situated at what’s informally known as “Station Zero”, the world-class resort boasts the islands largest pool, cutting edge health and wellness facilities, a number of restaurants and cafes and, to be quite frank, the island’s best pizza!

Plan your next stay at Movenpick Boracay and enjoy the quieter, more family-friendly side of the island.

The Weight of Words: A Millennial Mental Health Monologue

I didn’t know what to expect when we watched this show. After the monologue, your mind was stimulated, but still it needed time to process the depth of storytelling and theatre artistry of Abner and the Black Canvas team.

This is the kind of show that we need to talk about now before another friend passes away.

It took me a few days to reflect on what it meant. It was approachable but profound, the kind that would touch your heart and change your perspective on the weight of every word we speak (and not speak).

I highly recommend that you do not miss the Pineapple Lab run, and I also hope that they have more and more theatre run extensions. (If you are watching the show, best to read this reflection after watching it.)

Here’s why you should watch #BlackCanvasWOW…

Weight of Words (WoW)
PARC Foundation Blackbox on May 31 (8PM), June 1-2 (4PM & 8PM), and
Pineapple Lab on June 15 (5PM & 8PM) and 16 (4PM & 8PM).

AQUA Boracay: The Secret of Boracay’s Best Day Pool Club!

Aqua Boracay is the best Day Pool Club in Boracay not only because of its Pool Party events but because it serves one of the best Spanish-inspired beach cuisines by Chef Chele Gonzales of Gallery by Chele fame.

Most people miss out on Aqua because they think it’s an exclusive private club where there’s nothing to do if there are no pool party events. Some think it is closed for construction. What they don’t know is that this is, in fact, one of the best places to eat and enjoy a pool party in the New Boracay.

Here are the secrets of the best day pool club in Boracay…

First Things First

It is easily accessed via e-trikes (₱120 special trip) passing through the back end of Balabag Lake at the back of D’Mall.

This part of the island is nice during high tide and feels like a hideaway from the busy White Beach.

LOS INDIOS BRAVOS: Why You Have to Try the Best English Pub in Boracay

What I like about Los Indios Bravos is that it features the signature pub food recipes of Chef Kenneth Cacho and Chef Norbert Gandler of ISCAHM fame while celebrating the best of all-Filipino Craft Beers (on tap), Brown and White Spirits of the Philippines at the same time. Most importantly, it pays tribute to “Los Indios Bravos”—the Brave Natives of the 1800’s, Filipino intellectuals and warrior-poets and the Tirol Family of Boracay Island.

Bong Tirol, Martin Jickain and wife Maggie Tirol established the new Los Indios Bravos hidden at the back of White House in the New Boracay.

We tried most of the food and drinks, and here are our favorites that you should not miss at the island’s best English pub…

Located at White House Boracay, Station 1
Opening Hours: 11.00 am – 11.00 pm

Kansai, Japan Itinerary! Exploring Osaka, Nara and Mie using the Kintetsu Railway Pass!

Let’s chase the cherry blossoms of Kansai!

Kansai or Western Japan is an area that includes Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Mie.

In spring, the region transforms into this beautiful destination filled with a sea of cherry blossom trees awash with all shades of pink.

Besides cherry blossom viewing, our itinerary also included other attractions in each city we passed by. We skipped Kyoto for this trip, mainly because we’ve been there several times, but if you haven’t been to Kyoto, I strongly suggest you add it to your itinerary.

Here’s how you can make the most of your Kansai Pass and save money on your travel budget.

Cherry Blossom Kansai Series:

• Kansai, Japan Itinerary! Exploring Osaka, Nara & Mie using the Kintetsu Railway Pass!
• Visit The Best Cherry Blossom Spot in Japan! (Mt. Yoshino & Nara Park Itinerary)

Visit The Best Cherry Blossom Spot in Japan! (Mt. Yoshino & Nara Park Itinerary)

Nara is my favorite place to chase Japan’s famous cherry blossoms. Here, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines are filled with this iconic image of a sea of cherry trees!

Nara is also home to Mt. Yoshino where 30,000 cherry blossom trees of different varieties are planted alongside the slope of the mountain, earning its title as Japan’s best cherry blossom spot.

If you’re in a hurry, here’s my quick guide for a day trip to Nara.
