THE INTAN: Peranakan Heritage Home-Museum by Antique Collector Alvin Yapp @VisitSingapore

Your Singapore-498.jpg
THE INTAN, which literally means “rose-cut diamond”, is the Peranakan house-museum of Alvin Yapp, collector and curator of Peranakan antiques and purveyor of Peranakan culture in Singapore.

Peranakan  means “descendant” and pertains to the ethnic Chinese who migrated in the 15th-16th century to the Malay peninsula, which includes Singapore. Although they have assimilated the Malay culture, they have distinct customs and traditions for Baba (men) and Nyonya (women). Most are elites of Singapore who have been loyal to the British than to China.

Trivia: Did you know that the Singapore Airlines flight attendant uniform is Peranakan-inspired?

ST. ANTHONY DE PADUA: Pilgrimage to Our Beloved Patron Saint in Padova, Italy (A Pilgrim’s Photo Essay)

Pilgrimage to St. Anthony de Padova-97.jpg

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA (or PADOVA in Italian) is a Miracle Worker, the Hammer of Heretics, and more popularly known as the Patron Saint of Finding Things & Lost People.

He is my patron saint, and my mother always prayed to him for guidance and protection when I was growing up. Also, a lot of businessmen in Manila have St. Anthony as their patron saint because he often intercedes and blesses their businesses to be successful.

I finally had the chance of a lifetime to go on a pilgrimage to St. Anthony Basilica early this year in Padova, Italy. This is where his blessed body lies after his death on June 13, 1231. We celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony on June 13 to commemorate his blessedness.

Here is the photo essay of our Pilgrimage to St. Anthony de Padua Basilica to kick off the Northern Italy series in OAP:

GARDENS BY THE BAY: Singapore’s Iconic Super Trees, Cloud Dome, and Sleeping Child Installation Art @VisitSingapore

2/23/15 Update: GARDENS BY THE BAY Singapore: What’s the Best Way to Explore the Gardens? @VisitSingapore

    Your Singapore-503.jpg

GARDENS BY THE BAY is Singapore’s newest icon — a $1-billion investment over a 100-hectare green park zone located in Marina Bay’s “new downtown” area. It is known for its 12 Steel Giant Supertrees and 2 cooled dome conservatories: The Cloud Forest and the Flower Dome.

It is a project by Singapore’s National Parks Board, which aims to boldly transform the City of Singapore into a “City in a Garden” instead of just a “Garden City”. It was recently awarded the World Building of the Year in the World Architecture Festival 2012.

This is definitely one of the Singapore attractions I would recommend for a date with that special someone or to spend time with the family. You need to allot 3 hours max to explore the gardens.

Here are some tips on how to have an awesome experience in Gardens by the Bay:

C BOUTIQUE HOTEL and the Flavors of Baguio Food Tour

    C Botique Day 1-54.jpg
C BOUTIQUE HOTEL is a homey 17-room boutique hotel by Charley Antonio. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood near Wright Park and is walking distance from the Mines View area.

You can think of it as a nice home away from home when you are in Baguio. One of the things I like in C Boutique is waking up to a yummy breakfast experience. This summer, Our Awesome Planet collaborated with C Boutique to enhance the Baguio experience with the Flavors of Baguio tour.

Here is our C Boutique and Flavors of Baguio Experience:
