The German Club offers the best German food in Manila. It’s for members only, so you have to be accompanied by a German host to be able to eat here.

We were invited by Michael Hasper, Deputy Head of Mission, and Carmina Barcelon, Press and Cultural Section of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Manila, to recap and reminisce our Berlin trip with Camille Co. 🙂

CHEF DU PARTIE (or CDP for short), is a restaurant offering global cuisine by Malou Fores (MMF) of Mamou & Recovery Food fame, Katrina Kuhn-Alcantara (KKA) of Mesclun & Chuck’s Deli, and Kristine del Gallego-Locsin (KGL), formerly of Lu.

They offer dishes inspired by Paris, New York, and Manila. They also specialize in cocktails and have a well-curated wine list by their partners. It’s a great destination for foodie dates or food and wine pairing.

I took my wifey out on a date in CDP for the first time since giving birth to our youngest son, and here’s what we think about it…

VASK Gallery’s 40 Days & 40 Nights Degustation is a collaboration of Chef J. Luis Gonzales and Chef Julieta Caruso, former Head Chef of Mugaritz (World’s Top #6 in San Sebastian, Spain), based on their 40-day food trip to discover authentic Filipino flavors all over the Philippines.

The limited degustation menu highlighted native and everyday local ingredients presented in gastronomic dishes. Much of the inspiration behind this effort came from their collective desire to acknowledge the deep historical connection the Philippines shares with Spain, through sustainable cooking.

The resulting flavors from the collaboration were very memorable. Witnessing what can be done with Filipino ingredients was a mind-blowing experience. This was one epic dinner that changed the way I look at Filipino cuisine and made me feel proud to be part of culinary history in the making in Manila.

You should notice the difference in the taste and texture of their bread because of their signature Natural Liquid Leaven, which sets it apart from the yeast-based breads in Manila. Eric Kayser demanded to have a commissary from the start and sent his trained French bakers in Manila to ensure the top quality of the breads, following the tradition of using a long natural fermentation process, slow kneading, and small-scale production.

THE WHOLESOME TABLE is an Organic Comfort Food Restaurant by Bianca Araneta Elizalde of Aria Boracay Fame.

All the produce comes from organic sources; they use free-range chicken and eggs, grass-fed beef, wild-caught seafood, and local artisan products. All the sauces are natural and made from scratch, and they don’t use high fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, or trans fats.

Their passionate commitment to all things wholesome and healthy is contagious.

LEMURIA is a private dining French restaurant conceptualized by Mrs. Marina “Kitt” Schroeder, hidden in Horseshoe Village, Quezon City. It’s name is inspired by the mystery behind the lost continent of Lemuria.

The cozy dining area is located on top of the Brumms Quality Wine Cellar, with a curated wine list from Germany, Austria, Romania, and other boutique wineries the Shroeders love.

BASKIN-ROBBINS is America’s Favorite Neighborhood Ice Cream Shop, founded by brothers-in-law Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins in 1945. The brand was last seen in Manila more than a decade ago but has now made a comeback. The timing couldn’t be more right, because Manileños have been craving for better ice creams. 🙂

We had to wait for close to 2 hours on Baskin Robbins’ opening weekend, but it was well worth it. Part of the fun is in choosing from 31 delicious flavors and customizing how you want to enjoy your ice cream.

PURPLE YAM MALATE: A Taste of Reimagined Filipino Food & Revival of Malate! @PurpleYamNYC #VivaManila

PURPLE YAM MALATE is the local branch of the popular Purple Yam Modern Filipino Restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. It was founded in 2007 by Amy Besa and Chef Romy Dorotan of Cendrillon fame in Soho. Its name was inspired by the owner’s love of ube. 🙂

The Malate branch is only open on weekends for by-reservation private dining — dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and brunch on Sundays. The owners describe their restaurant as a “serious dining” establishment (as opposed to a fine dining one).

The opening of Purple Yam is sure to create a buzz among the foodies in Manila and hopefully usher in the revival of Malate.

Rache and I brought the boys with us to try the Sunday brunch during their opening weekend. Here’s what we think…
