FRANGOS: Foodies’ Favorite Portuguese-style Piri Piri Chicken in Manila! @LegazpiMarket

Frangos Portuguese Kitchen-20.jpg

FRANGOS is a popular Portuguese-style Piri Piri Chicken stand in the Legaspi Sunday Market, by Pia and Jonathan Renato. “Frango” means “chicken” in Portuguese, and sounds similar to the popular Piri Piri Chicken fast food chain, Nandos.

Jonathan was known in the bar and restaurant scene for Verve Room, Kemistry, Manila DJ Club, and the 32nd Street Bar and Resto, while Pia was known for Golden Triangle during the Malate Days.

They recently opened a standalone restaurant for all the Frangos fanatics in the market and extended their offerings to include other Portuguese favorites.

Here’s what we think about Frangos…

SMITH Butcher and Grill Room: The Best Steakhouse in Manila? @SmithButcher

Smith & Butcher Room (Part 2)-40.jpg
SMITH Butcher and Grill Room by Chef Tom Hines and Dixie Marinas of Lulu + Hooch aims to elevate the steakhouse experience in Manila to whole different level. Their selling proposition is a personalized steak experience and an extensive selection of meats–from Japan, Australia, the US, and Europe–which are either directly flown-in or sourced locally from importers.

A unique feature of the place is the Steak Room–an art museum-like showcase of their meat offerings, providing patrons with complete flexibility over their choice of steak and how they want to enjoy it. All this in a not-your-typical-steakhouse ambiance, surrounded by beautiful handcrafted furniture.

The name SMITH is meant to project images of a skilled purveyor and in this particular case, a purveyor of an awesome steak experience (think blacksmith for steaks). There is no relation, however, to the other “Smith” steakhouses–Smith & Wollensky or Smith Brothers.

Could this be the best Steakhouse in Manila? Check out our experience…

Pizzeria Mozza is an Italian Pizza Restaurant by celebrity chefs Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali with restaurateur and winemaker Joseph Bastianich. It’s the second outlet after the main Los Angeles restaurant, and it opened in Singapore last 2010.

Most Filipinos are proud to eat here because the executive chef in the Singapore branch is a Filipina–Chef Karla Mendoza. Its fine dining counterpart–Osteria Mozza–again made it to #45 of the 50 World’s Best in Asia in 2015.

CAFE DUA: Cafe by the Ruins 2 Baguio Dinner! (A Review) #CafebytheMarios

Cafe by the Ruins Dua-3.jpg
CAFE BY THE RUINS DUA is the first branch of the popular Cafe by the Ruins in Baguio after 25 years as a standalone establishment. Its new location beside Mario’s Baguio on Upper Session Road will serve as the main bakery and commissary for baked goods and pre-cooked frozen pasalubong.

It’s a relief that you can now enjoy Cafe by the Ruins without braving the traffic of Session Road and Burnham Park. The “ruins” charm is lost in the new branch, but the modern-hip interiors are in tune with its double purpose as a gallery for Cordillera arts and culture.
