SAGADA CELLAR DOOR: Agadulay’s Kitchen Igorot Dinner and Sagada Craft Beer Experience! (A Review)

Sagada Day 1-128.jpg

CELLAR DOOR by Andrew Chinaplan Jr. and Binggirl Clements is Sagada’s first and only private dining, wine cellar, and craft brewery place.

Bing prepares her signature Igorot and Ilonggo Buffet (at least 3 hours prior reservation required) at Agadulay’s Kitchen. They can also serve a French Buffet by Sagada-based French Chef Aklay, but you have to reserve 3 days in advance.

Andrew curates their wine cellar and brews the Sagada craft beers, proudly made from local products like Sagada Arabica Coffee, Heirloom Rice, Sunflower Honey, and Sagada Oranges.

We visited Cellar Door for two straight nights while we were in Sagada, and here are our recommendations…

MADE NICE Supper Club by Young New York-Trained Filipino Chefs!

(As featured in 10 Most Awesome New Homegrown Restaurants That Matter in Manila 2016!)

Made Nice Supper Club-24.jpg

MADE NICE is a New York-inspired restaurant serving Western cuisine with Asian influences. It’s by the Greatful Group made up of young New York-trained Chefs–Jack Flores (29) and wife Gabbi Ramos Flores (22), Toby Panlilio (26), Wren Go (27), and Raulito Fores (26).

Gabbi is the daughter of Neil of Neil’s Kitchen fame, while Raulito comes from the Fores clan of Mamou. It’s inspiring to see the next generation of restaurateurs going back to Manila and contributing to the flourishing vibrant dining scene in their homeland.

The name of the resto is inspired by Daniel Humm and Will Guidara’s “Make It Nice” restaurant group.

My wife and I had a date night with some friends at Made Nice. Here’s a first look into this Supper Club…

MATIAS BBQ: Cebu’s Favorite Barbecue Spot! (Review)

Matias BBQ

One favorite street food of Pinoys is barbecue–pork or chicken meat or giblets skewered on sticks and cooked over a charcoal grill.

For Cebuanos, the go-to place for barbecue is Matias in Mandaue City. Nestled under the shade of sweet star apple trees, this open-air eatery sells very affordable pork barbecue, chicken barbecue, chorizo, pork belly, balbacua, and other local dishes.

The secret to keep locals coming back is their delicious sweet red sauce and value-for-money dishes.

Here’s what we liked at Matias…

Owned by a French Chef, Philippe Estienne, who settled in Cebu with his Filipina wife, the bistro is popular for their perfectly buttery, light, and flaky croissants, chocolats, and kouign amann–all baked fresh daily.

Tymad means “good house” or “good restaurant” and comes from a Celtic language in the south of France.

The Original Balamban Liempo: Johnna’s Liempo in Balamban Market!

Balamban Liempo-7.jpg

Ask any of the locals for the original liempo in Balamban and they’ll direct you to Johnna’s Liempo Haus.

Balamban, located in the western part of Cebu, is known for its distinctive method of grilling Liempo using traditional herbs and spices, similar to how you would prepare Lechon Cebu.

Bebot Mapa, the creator of the original recipe of Balamban Liempo, rightfully deserves the “original” label. He is not affiliated with the Balamban Liempo brand you’ll find across Cebu. He sells his liempo at a humble take-out store near Balamban’s public market.

RICO’s LECHON: “Da Best Gyud” Most Awesome Lechon in Cebu!

Cebu: Rico's

Eating Lechon is central to your Cebu experience! Dubbed as the “Lechon Capital” of the Philippines, Cebu prides itself in having perfected the art of roasting pigs, and in the tastiness and crispiness its lechon is known for.

We asked locals where we could find the best lechon and they all pointed us to Rico’s Lechon, pioneer of the famous Spicy Lechon. Owner Enrico Dionson likes to keep things simple–his roasted lechon is only seasoned with traditional herbs and spices and has always been since he opened the business in 1997.

Their slogan, “Da Best Gyud”, lives up to our expectations. Indeed, it’s a lechon worthy of being called the best in Cebu. The restaurant also likes to stay ahead by adding Pinoy favorites to the menu other than lechon.

Here’s what we liked at Rico’s…

HEY, HANDSOME! The Best New Homegrown Restaurant of 2016?

(As featured in 10 Most Awesome New Homegrown Restaurants That Matter in Manila 2016!)

Hey Handsome-40.jpg

HEY HANDSOME is a Southeast Asian restaurant collaboration of Chef Nicco Santos of Your Local and Charles Paw of Hole in the Wall. Its name is inspired by how Singaporeans call potential customers to their establishments–“Hey, Handsome”–just like “Hi, Pogi” in local terms.

The food portions are huge, yummy, and provide good value for money. Most foodies rave about it because of the consistent quality of the food.

Is this really the Best New Homegrown Restaurant that opened in 2016? Check out what we think…
