Located on the 2nd level of Seda Vertis North, Pin Wei is a 130-seater restaurant offering traditional Cantonese specialties.

Executive Chinese Chef Chen, with international hotel experience in Indonesia, Singapore and Dubai, is the former executive chef of Tin Hau.

It highlights natural lighting from floor-to-ceiling windows, bleached wooden panels and seats with woven rattan backrests.

Test Kitchen 2.0 by Chef Josh Boutwood in Rockwell

As featured in 10 Best NEW Homegrown Restaurants in Manila of 2019!

The Test Kitchen 2.0 moved from the actual test kitchen of the Bistro Academy in Kamagong to the posh neighborhood of Rockwell with bigger space, a la carte versions (vs tasting menu) and the cool kitchen lab playground of Chef Josh Boutwood.

We tried most of the items in the menu and here’s what to expect and what to order at the new Test Kitchen in Rockwell…

Prelude

The Test Kitchen Menu: Snacks, First | Second, Third | Beverage Menu | Wine by the Glass

The menu is now completely a la carte and divided into 4 courses, changing based on season and what’s freshly available.

Drink Menu: Red Wine (France) | (Italy, Spanish) | (USA, South Africa, South America) | White Wine (France, Italy) | (Spain) | Rose Wine (France, Italy), Dessert Wine/ Port, Sparkling Wines/ Champagne

The open kitchen from the original Test Kitchen was recreated and there are bar counters if you want to watch the action.

Make sure to go on a tour of the second floor where they age the meats, ferment the ingredients and store the spices.

The tables upstairs are bigger, for groups of 8-10 people because the tables downstairs have smaller fixed 2-6 configurations.

They now have a proper aging room for meats aged 6, 3 or 2 months and their own Jamon aged for 3 years.

This is where you can geek out on the fermented fruits and ingredients, house-made garum (fish sauce) and special spices.

George Town SUPER STEAK: How Mibrasa-Cooked Meats Ruined the Steak Experience Anywhere Else

As featured in 10 Best Restaurants/Cafes of One Bonifacio High Street!

George Town Super Steak is a steak house specializing in steaks and seafood cooked in the Spanish Mibrasa closed charcoal grill oven. The Mibrasa-cooked meats have a nice sear and are not dry because the oven keeps the juice sealed into the meat. Once you’ve tried it, it would be hard to appreciate other meats cooked on a normal grill.

La Cabrera, the Argentinian steak house, uses their own charcoal grill oven, and the steak houses in hotels often use a similar Josper grill to cook their steaks. George Town SS aims to make higher quality Mibrasa-cooked steak more accessible with better value for money in a mall setting.

PUTIEN: What to Expect at 1-Michelin-Starred Fujian Cuisine now in Manila

One-Michelin-starred Singapore-based restaurant PUTIEN is now finally here in Manila, thanks to the Vikings Group. Its name is a tribute to owner Mr. Fong Chi Chung’s hometown Putian City, a coastal suburb in the province of Fujian in China.

Putien is known for its light, down-to-earth and flavorful food with emphasis on fresh and seasonal ingredients and a healthier take on Chinese cuisine. It’s also known for its seafood with limited pork options but no beef due to religious beliefs.

Their food looks exotic Chinese food compared to the Cantonese comfort food we are used to in Manila, but for Chinese families with roots in Fujian province, this is the food—cooked by Ama—they grew up with.

PUTIEN, a restaurant serving Singaporean-Fujian cuisine, was established in 2000 at Kitchener Road. It has been awarded a Michelin star since 2016.

Introducing… LAS FLORES Degustacion by Spanish Chef Ignacio Alcala!

There’s a new Spanish chef in town, Chef Ignacio Alcala, at the helm of the Las Flores group that foodies are raving about. In the recent Rambla Salcedo 6-Hands: Chef Josh x Chef Alfredo x Chef Ignacio, most people were all praises for the courses made by Chef Ignacio.

Chef Ignacio Alcala was the executive chef of Fonda Alcalá, his grandmother’s 100-year old restaurant located in a small village in his hometown Calaceite (Teruel) in Aragon, Spain. He honed his culinary skills in the competitive Barcelona food scene before he and his girlfriend succumbed to the allure of going to Manila to learn English and to find success in Asia.

Las Flores is now offering a degustacion (7-course tasting menu) by Chef Ignacio Alcala strictly by reservation only.

Elephant Grounds Manila is the Hongkong third-wave coffee franchise concept by The Standard Group (of Yabu and Ippudo fame) with the dynamic chef duo of Nicco Santos (executive chef) and Quenee Villar (formerly of Hey Handsome).

HAPAG MNL Private Dining: Is it Better Than Toyo? Yes/No (Review)

As featured in 10 Best NEW Homegrown Restaurants in Manila of 2019!

HAPAG MNL is a private dining venture turned into a modern Filipino restaurant by Chef-owners Thirdy Dolatre (CCA), Kevin Villarica (ISCAHM) and Kevin Navoa (Malaysia-trained) in a Quezon City neighborhood.  The name of the restaurant is inspired by the dining table where the family gathers to bond and eat.

Often compared to Toyo and said to be the younger and bolder version, Hapag elevates Filipino cuisine with cleaner execution and exciting presentation without losing its bold flavor taste profile. The comparison can’t be avoided because of their similarities: both are Chef-driven modern Filipino concepts characterized by an open kitchen, tasteful Filipino furniture and location that’s hidden in an alley.

Is it better than Toyo? Is it the next best thing in modern Filipino cuisine in Manila? Or is it all just hype?

I tried it with Rache and Chef Tatung, and here’s what we think…
