Tendon Kohaku: Eating Tempura in Manila will never be the same after this

Tendon Kohaku-20.jpg

Tendon Kohaku is a specialty tempura rice bowl concept that started the recent craze in Singapore with over hour-long queues.

Tendon, of course, is the concatenated word from Tenpura (tempura) and Donburi (rice bowl dish) referring to different tempura served over rice in a bowl, while Kohaku means “amber” in Japanese, which is representative of the color of the tempura (crispy golden exterior + our amber colored sauce).

The concept was founded by Japanese restaurant group Kings Know Inc. with presence in Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and now in Manila. The Philippine franchise is by the UCC group of Hubert Young, responsible for the successful opening of Coco Ichibanya Curry and Mitsuyado Sei-men Tsukumen in Manila.

Eating tempura in Manila will never be the same after you’ve tried this!

TSUTA RAMEN MANILA: Is it better than Ramen Nagi or Ippudo?

Tsuta Ramen Manila!-26.jpg

The first Michelin-starred Ramen in Tokyo by Master Chef Onishi Yuki has finally opened its doors in the Philippines!

Tsuta originated from Chef Yuki’s ancestral family name and from the strong belief that Ramen is the “noodles of which Japan can boast to the world.” He actually prefers to use the term Soba, which literally means “Japanese Noodles,” instead of Ramen, which is from the Chinese word Lamian (拉麵 noodles). This does not refer to our common understanding of soba as the fat buckwheat noodles.

Some Filipinos think it’s already too late for Tsuta’s entry into the Ramen Game in Manila. While this may be true for ho-hum quality ramen, it’s never too late for high-quality ones like Tsuta, as proven by its successful launch in mature ramen markets like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

So, is Tsuta better than Ramen Nagi or Ippudo? Read on to find out.

MANILA LIFE: Co-working Cafe before your NAIA3 Flight! @ManilaMarriott

DSC06405.jpg

Flying via NAIA3 just got better with the opening of Manila Life by Marriott Hotels, and the Runway Manila overpass from Resorts World.

Given the crazy traffic in Manila going to the airport, we usually head there 5 hours before our flight. Obviously, the long wait can get boring. But thanks to the lounge-like cafe of Manila Life, we now have a good place to hang out to work and eat while we wait to board.

Here’s how to have a pleasant departure experience on your next flight from NAIA Terminal 3…

Buca di Beppo Family Celebrations in Manila!

Buca di Peppo-41.jpg

The first time I tried Buca di Beppo was on my first trip to Cincinnati during my P&G Days. I remember enjoying the pizza and pasta in a very festive environment. After more than 100 stores worldwide, this popular Italian restaurant chain in America has finally opened its first store in Southeast Asia–in Manila, no less–thanks to entrepreneur Marcelino Florete Jr. of the Sbarro group.

The name is inspired by the original 1993 Italian restaurant in the basement of an apartment building in Minneapolis. Buca means “hole” or the Tuscan slang for basement, while Beppo is a nickname for Guiseppe, which is Joseph in Northern Italy.

Here’s what to expect and how to plan your own family celebrations at Buca di Beppo in Manila…

TSUTA: The First Michelin Star Ramen that totally deserves it.

Tsuta Japanese Soba Noodles was the first Ramen Restaurant to ever win a Michelin Star in 2015.

Master Chef and Owner Onishi Yuki opened Tsuta in Sugamo, Tokyo back in January 2012 to rave reviews, having won multiple awards and praises from ramen lovers across Japan. In 2015, it was awarded a prestigious Michelin Star, the first for a ramen restaurant at the time.

Tsuta is known for its clear broth ramen, which is much lighter and clean-tasting on the palate than the more popular Tonkotsu-style–a rich and almost thick style of pork broth.

Its success comes from Chef Onishi's dedication to quality and consistency, and his willingness to break with tradition by utilizing western ingredients such as black truffle and olives. The combination has proven successful, and ramen lovers from all over have shown their appreciation of it.
