Chef C’s Paella de Andaluz – a New Paella Discovery!

Rockwell UTT Winner #24:

162 foodies rated 4- I love it!
125 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
75 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
19 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Chef C’s Paella de Andaluz is a recent paella discovery, which was introduced in Mercato Centrale by our resident Angus Tapa Lady. It is almost sold out every weekend. Its success can probably be attributed to the great cooking skills that run in Chef Carlos’ family. He was able to successfully learn and apply the Spanish cooking techniques passed down through generations.

At the UTT, I kept hearing people rave about the seafood and meat paella. I wasn’t really surprised. The paella is quite unique and different from the ones already available in the market.

Congratulations to Chef C’s Paella de Andaluz for winning over foodies at the Ultimate Taste Test in Rockwell!

Baked by Anita Mini Gourmet Cupcakes!

Rockwell Ultimate Taste Test Winner #25:

84 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
120 foodies rated 4- I love it!
105 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
50 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
10 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Baked by Anita is dubbed as the “Queen of the Market” in Mercato Centrale. An interesting tidbit: She was the only vendor mentioned in the movie “No Other Woman” when Cristine Reyes (in the final scene in Mercato Centrale) said, “Hi, Anita” as she passed by her booth.

Anita continuously surprises us with different gourmet combinations of her bite-sized cupcakes. I just love the balsamic vinegar reduction flavor with fresh strawberries. With her unique concoctions, it won’t be long before Anita becomes a legendary cupcake baker in Manila. 🙂

In Rockwell’s UTT, she introduced her mini-cupcake with maple roasted bacon with maple buttercream. A lot of foodies raved about this bacon cupcake. Congratulations to Baked by Anita!

48 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
2 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

The Muesli Granola by Celia is our favorite healthy snack when we go on a road trip. Her granola bars are also among the favorite food finds in Mercato Centrale. They are yummy, guilt-free treats and perfect gifts for health-conscious foodies — even diabetics can enjoy them.

In the UTT in Rockwell, Celia proved that healthy snacks do not need to be boring and bland with her Chocolate-Dipped Bar Muncher. I also liked the crispy and chewy combination of the Monkey Bar with its peanut-y taste. Now, we have something new to bring on our next road food trip! 🙂 The UTT foodies also loved these healthy snack bars. Congratulations to Muesli Granola Kitchen!

Eat My GF (Garlic Fries)!

Rockwell UTT Winner #27: EAT MY GF Original GF with Toppings, Virgin Chips 3.57

UTT Rating Breakdown:
134 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
143 foodies rated 4- I love it!
175 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
67 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
16 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Eat My GF‘s product is simple — garlic fries done well. It has that good garlicky taste and crispy texture. It is definitely better than the other commercial versions out there. I guess it also helps that its name is very catchy (with a slightly sexual tone). Foodies can’t stop raving about this GF!

Congratulations to Eat My GF for garnering great scores at Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test!

Mang Pedro’s Taho — One of the Best Flavored Taho in Town :)

Rockwell UTT Winner #28: Mang Pedro’s Food Products 3.56

UTT Rating Breakdown:
73 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
116 foodies rated 4- I love it!
90 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
45 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
13 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Mang Pedro’s Taho is not your usual neighborhood taho. They serve flavored taho wherein the flavor is infused in the taho itself. (Other taho vendors offer flavored options via toppings or syrups.) They supply taho to hotels and restaurants, and also joined Mercato Centrale once.

I just love the milkiness of their taho and their almond taho flavor. You can buy their product in bulk, which comes in 4-Liter to 12-Liter special containers that you can bring to potluck parties or family gatherings.

Congratulations to Mang Pedro’s Taho for doing well in Rockwell’s UTT!

This team of David and Margie Tan of Symphony of Flavors sure knows how to tickle the taste buds of foodies in the Ultimate Taste Test series. Their Cookie Monster Cheesecake in UTT 3.0 and their Leche Flan Cheesecake in the recently concluded Rockwell UTT were both big hits.

I love how they balanced the sweet taste of the leche flan with the cheesecake. And, as pointed out by some UTT guests, it does resemble a chiffon cake topped with custard. They certainly take the cake when it comes to producing cheesecakes with great quality and taste. 🙂 Congratulations to Symphony of Flavors!

Pinakbest is one of the most popular food vendors (and a personal favorite of mine) at Midnight Mercato. With their offerings of Bagnet, Ilocos Norte Empanada and Longganiza, they are doing a great job of promoting Ilocos Food. This is as close as you can get to authentic Bagnet and Ilocos Empanada in Manila!

At Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test, they had one of the longest lines. 🙂 I’m happy they met the cut-off rating of 3.5.  Congratulations to Pinakbest!

Promising to only serve natural ingredients with no sugar, no MSG and no preservatives, they also prepare everything fresh daily. Biodegradable packaging and utensils are used whenever possible.

Faburrito is designed to be a Christian business where employees are treated well, part of the proceeds go to a good cause and customers are assured that the food is made only with the good stuff. It’s an interesting concept but very niche.

Bulgogi Brothers now in Manila!

The first international franchise of Bulgogi Brothers (with 29 branches in South Korea) finally opened in Manila! 🙂

At first, I thought it was just one of those franchises capitalizing on the booming expansion of International Chains here in the metro. I’m usually not a fan of restaurants based in a mall, but the foodies were abuzz with excitement over the opening of Bulgogi Brothers, so I had to see it for myself.

I was happy that our family decided to try it because it was different. I liked the awesome free appetizers they offered, the unique food combinations with their Korean liquor, and the family-friendly nature of the restaurant. I also loved their focus on service (which a lot of other restaurants in Manila need to improve on).

It was during our visit that I learned how to truly appreciate Bulgogi, particularly through the different ways it was prepared and served, plus how it was paired it with various liquors.

Here are some foodie notes on what to expect at Bulgogi Brothers…

Nomama (2x) But You

A lot of foodies have been waiting for Chef Him Uy de Baron to open his own restaurant.

After gaining a following from his successful catering gigs, he finally decided to open Nomama — a Japanese restaurant with a twist, focusing on artisanal ramen with ingredients made from scratch.

Nomama in Japanese means “That’s it”, but this resto got its name from a play on words that it’s “not your mama’s ramen”.

Locavores would be happy to know that he supports the slow food movement and only uses the freshest local and organic produce in Manila whenever possible. He is committed to the same advocacy as Chef Sandralyn Hataway of Tourné, Chef Tatung, and Chef Sau del Rosario of Le Bistro Vert.

The BEST RAMEN in Manila Series 2013:
