There were a lot of cakes, cupcakes, and baked goods during the last Ultimate Taste Test, but The Noodle Bakes stood out because of their interesting flavors.

We love the Garth Vader, which was made for peanut butter lovers. It’s like Reese’s and Butterfinger rolled into one cake!

You can also try their Tosi, which is a cake inspired by the addicting NYC crack pie dessert.

One of my favorite variations of the Cronut™ (a croissant-doughnut hybrid by Chef Dominique Ansel) is the home-based kronuts version by BRONUTS

It’s a thick, flaky sweet dough with a hole in a middle, filled with cream and topped with  flavorful treats. I like their savory version, Cream Cheese & Bacon, and the sweet version, Belgian Chocolate with Salted Caramel.

Congratulations to Edie Lim and partners for winning UTT XI with their yummy Bronuts creation!

Nikki Wilkerson of Uni-Chefs is one of the interesting bakers to watch out for. She apprenticed with Jacques Torres NYC, whose cookies are voted as the best in the world. She learned the techniques and now applies them to her signature cakes (using local ingredients) and other baked goodies as part of Uni-Chefs catering service.

She likes to do flavors that are “simple and perfectly done” vs. something new, weird, or different.
Once you’ve tasted her cakes, you’ll notice the difference.

Only thing is, they’re based in Villa Teresa in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Ultimate Taste Test XI- Cinematic Studios-53.jpg

We’re big taho lovers and EVERYTHING WITH SOYA‘s is the best flavored taho we’ve ever tasted. It’s smooth and literally melts in your mouth. It has the right amount of sweetness and the flavor is well-infused into the soya.

If we would rank all the flavors, melon would be top, followed by strawberry, then original flavor, and lastly, chocolate.

Congratulations to Hannah on your Everything with Soya venture!

LOUIE’s Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies provide a good balance of chocolate and cookie dough with a sea-salt kick. Among all the cookies during the taste test, these stood out the most. My wife raves about them, too. 🙂

They were a surprise, last-minute entry in the Ultimate Taste Test home-based category, and turned out to be one of the winners of the UTTXI series. 🙂 Congrats, Jessica!

MALAGOS CHOCOLATE is one of my favorite Chocolate discoveries during the recent taste test. This is brought to us by the same Puentespina Family from Davao, also famous for their Malagos Cheese. The chocolate was highly rated by the US-based C-Spot objective chocolate rating site.

I personally like the 75% Dark Chocolate version while my wife likes the 85% Dark chocolate. Both were also available for taste test during the event. Their chocolate has balanced sweetness and is not too bitter.

Congratulations to Rex and Jen Puentespina for another proudly Filipino product!

PORKETTA MAN: Porketta (Boneless Pork Belly Lechon) To Go!

PORKETTA MAN-6.jpg

PORKETTA is a 6-hour brick oven, slow-roasted pork belly. Think about it as a boneless pork belly lechon with crispy skin and lots of herbs and spices.

PORKETTA MAN is a secret Porketta-on-the-go business by Ram Jorge that is now making waves in the lechon-loving foodie community in Manila. Thanks to Michi Calica for giving me the tip on this and for Chef Sau for raving about it and sending me a sampler. 🙂

DIMSUM BREAK: Are you craving for The Original Steamed Fried Rice of Cebu?!

DIMSUM BREAK-18.jpg

The Steam Fried Rice of Cebu is fried rice topped with shrimp and pork, and steamed in a rice cooker with its secret sauce. This was an original creation of Mr. Henry Uytengsu of Ding Qua Qua Dimsum House in Cebu, which pionereed the all-day dimsum dining in 1969.

After Ding Qua Qua (1 branch) which offers a signature dimsum buffet, Mr. Uytengsu’s group created Harbour City Dimsum House (3 branches) which featured the traditional dimsum carts wheeled to the customers’ table-sides. They then created the mall-based Dimsum Break outlet (13 banches) to originally address the dining needs of the mall’s late night foodies from the bowling alleys and cinemas.

True enough, the name “Dimsum Break” was inspired by taking breaks to eat dimsum during a bowling session. It is considered the Philippines’ version of Panda Express.

Check out what Dimsum Break has to offer…
