HUNI SICOGON: What to Expect @hunisicogon ? (First Look)

Huni Sicogon is Ayala Land’s latest venture in Western Visayas. Just opened this July 2018, it is a 52-key, 2-storey boutique resort located at Sicogon Tourism Estate.

Sicogon Island is located on the northernmost part of Iloilo, under the municipality of Carles. This island has remained under the radar for the past few years, especially after Yolanda hit and brought casualty to the locals and their livelihood. Ayala is set to turn the island into a tourism estate, much like Lio El Nido.

I had the privilege to be one of the first few to visit the resort in its first week. Here’s what you can expect at Huni:

RGIES DELICACIES: Arguably Iloilo’s Favorite Butterscotch Pasalubong!?

Argies Iloilo
RGies butterscotch- why this soft moist and chewy treat  a favorite pasalubong item from Iloilo?

Growing up in Bacolod, I’m very fond of eating butterscotch from the neighboring city Iloilo. There are two brands I swear by, and that’s Biscocho Haus and RGie’s.

Usually, you’d only get cashew’s in your butterscotch, but RGies was the first to introduce different variants from classic favorites cashew to mango, dates, choco oats, coffee, almonds, durian, lemon, banana and coffee flavor.

Argies Iloilo

R and G stand for Ramon and Grace Javelosa the owner couple of RGies. It was initially RG’s, but they decided to “spell it out” when they officially had the business registered.

RGies started in a small home kitchen back in 1986, where the dad would make homemade butterscotch and give it to his co-workers in Roxas city as “pasalubong” items from Iloilo. The co-workers loved it so much that they eventually, persuaded the couple to start selling their products because they were too embarrassed to ask for more of their homemade sweets.

GRAND XING IMPERIAL HOTEL: Affordable Premium Hotel in Iloilo City!

Grand Xing Imperial Hotel
Iloilo City is known for its rich cultural history, art, historic churches, old mansions, picture-perfect countryside, mouthwatering seafood, and the famed Dinagyang Festival. All of these makes it a remarkable destination in Western Visayas.

With the gradual rise in business and economy in the Manduriao district, the owners of Grand Xing Imperial Hotel had a vision of bringing back the old glory of Iloilo to life.

Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, located in Iloilo’s downtown area is a modern 184-room hotel that promises its guests a premium experience at reasonable rates. We like the modern rooms, all-floor KTV bar, majestic ballrooms, and its star attraction–an infinity pool that overlooks Iloilo river.

MSO Sweet Symphonies: Manila Symphony Orchestra in Iloilo City! (Photo Essay)

SNY00062

The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is a 55-piece world-class ensemble founded in 1926. It is regarded as Asia’s first symphony orchestra.

Ilonggos were in for a treat when MSO played their hearts out in two of the most iconic places in Iloilo as part of the 80th Iloilo City Charter Day celebration.

The two-night spectacle was under the baton of master conductor Professor Arturo Molina. On August 25 and 26, the Manila Symphony Orchestra wooed music lovers with “Sweet Symphonies: Bach vs. Beatles” and “Soundtracks and Symphonies” at the iconic Molo Church and the Iloilo Convention Center, respectively.

Here's what happened during the grand two-day celebration…

ILOILO FOOD TRIP: Where are the BEST Places to Eat in Iloilo?

ILOILO FOOD TRIPIloilo is the center of commerce in the Western Visayas region. It is the home of the famous Batchoy, Breakthrough and Miag-ao Church. Here are the must-visit foodie places in Iloilo:

1. Breakthrough

Breakthrough Iloilo-35.jpg

The undisputed king of fresh seafood in Iloilo and the number one tourist spot in the city. It is famous for its Aligue Rice and the Managat fish (also known as red snapper or mangrove jack). Native Chicken Inasal and fresh/baked oysters are also served here.

The restaurant is the brainchild of marine biologist Raymundo Robles, who just wanted to have a side restaurant business for his wife. It was named after every scientist’s aspiration, which is to achieve a breakthrough in his/her field.

The best part of the Breakthrough experience is being able to enjoy the glorious food (and the popular vinegar called Sinamak) with the fresh sea breeze blowing around you.

Breakthough now has a branch called Ponsyon by Breakthough located in Plazuela de Iloilo. Another alternative is Tatoy’s, which offers almost the same cuisine and is located near the same beach area. Some foodies like Villarosa by the Beach and look for Orly’s.

Netong's Batchoy-26.jpg
Iloilo is the home of Batchoy, and there is a never-ending debate on who offers the best version – Ted’s or Deco’s. However, the best authentic Batchoy for me can be found in Netong’s Lapaz Batchoy.

Iloilo’s Dinagyang: Hala Bira! Viva Señor Santo Niño!

Dinagyang 2012-106.jpg
A lot of festival enthusiasts believe that Dinagyang is one of the BEST Festivals in the Philippines.

Although the celebration still has that quaint, provincial city-feel, the Ati-Ati dance productions are among the best that I’ve seen in street dance festivals in the Philippines. They are the Grand Champions in the Aliwan Festival (Manila-based competition for all the street dance festivals) in 2010 and 2011.

Dinagyang is the best time to go to Iloilo!

Here are the things you need to know to have an awesome experience in DINAGYANG:
