Legally Blonde The Musical in Manila!

The second half of the 2010 Theater Season in Manila is getting exciting. Nikki Gil (of Coke commercial fame) plays the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical in Manila! The show is an adaptation of the Hollywood movie starring Reese Witherspoon. In case you haven’t watched the film, the story is basically about Elle Woods’ transformation from a frivolous sorority star to a Harvard Law student as she pursues the love of her life who dumped her for a more “serious” girl.

Reminiscin’ Avenue Q

As I watched the Avenue Q preview show last night, I couldn’t help but get sentimental about how it made an impact on my life. This show is for people at the crossroads of their lives — be it their love life, their career or their life purpose.

My favorite line in the show is from Kate Monster: “You gotta go after the things you want while you’re still in your prime…” I watched the show during its first three runs in Manila and, each time, it gave me comfort when I looked back at my decision to quit my multinational day job.

On its fifth run, the seasoned cast members Felix Rivera as Princeton, Aiza Seguerra as Gary Coleman, Frenchie Dy as Christmas Eve, Thea Tadiar and Joel Trinidad as Trekkie Monster were very enthusiastic in performing once again after their successful staging in Singapore. All of them thought (me included) that the Singapore run was the last of the Avenue Q series in Asia.

Avenue Q is BACK with Rachel Alejandro!

Avenue Q is finally back in Manila on its fifth run!

Rachel Alejandro is back as Kate Monster/ Lucy The Slut instead of Carla Guevara-Laforteza, who is currently playing the role of Maureen in RENT. Calvin Millado, who originally played Roger in the first run of RENT in Manila, is joining Avenue Q as Brian. The rest of the Avenue Q Gang are back - Aiza Seguerra, Frenchie Dy, Felix Rivera, Thea Tadiar and Joel Trinidad.

If you missed Avenue Q last time, now is the time to see it. 🙂 Experience the excitement in its last run in Manila before going to Singapore…

Romeo and Bernadette

Valentine’s is not yet over, not until you have watched Romeo & Bernadette. 🙂

The premise of this musical is funny in itself. Romeo did not die, he was just sleeping — until he awakens in the 1960’s. He meets Bernadette in Verona, Italy (whom he thinks is his lovely Juliet) and decides to pursue her all the way to Brooklyn in America.

It’s a bit “old school” theater, but it still is very, very funny. Just imagine: Brooklyn accents, Italian melodies, Shakespearean poetry, and Gangsters in a Romantic Comedy Musical. It’s sort of a weird combination but it works.

It has audience participation like RENT’s “Moo!” scene. Here, the crowd chants, “DONNA, DONNA…” Rem Zamora gives ROMEO & BERNADETTE great comic relief, much like what Job Bautista’s portrayal of Angel gave RENT. Both musicals are set in America but in different eras — RENT is in the ’90s while ROMEO & BERNADETTE is in the ’60s.

We love it because it’s unpredictably funny, complete with a showcase of 1960’s fashion. It is a feel-good romantic play that is light and sure to please any theater newbie out there.

RENT Manila 2010 Review

UPDATE: [RENT The Musical in Manila 2011 Contest] How Did you Measure Your Life in 2010?

Related Blog Post: Manila’s Essential Guide to Rent The Musical

It was a good show last night with awesome performances from Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Maureen and newcomer Job Bautista as Angel Dumott Schunard. Maureen’s Over the Moon performance was very memorable, especially when she encouraged the crowd to MOO with her (with her facial expression resembling that of a person suffering from loose bowel movement). Angel’s performance was “orgasmic” and he assumed the role like a theater veteran. His chemistry with OJ Mariano as Tom Collins was an instant hit with the audience because it was very believable.

The ensemble cast did a great job as well. Our favorite was Johann Dela Fuente’s “Honest Living” scene. We also liked Raul Montesa, Gary Junsay and Mark Tayag’s various mini-skits throughout the play. Well done, guys!

Seasons of Love
is my uber-favorite RENT Song
! This actually inspired me to quit my day job because I wanted to have a life of meaning by touching Filipinos with our food and travel discoveries in the Philippines.

Do you measure life in terms of the number of pay days and salary increases every year?
Do you measure life in terms of years, months, days, hours or minutes? OR
Do you measure life in terms of the number of people you love and touch?

It really is a beautiful song. In honor of this favorite tune of mine, I’d like to invite you to join a contest.

To enter, you just have to answer this: “What’s your favorite Rent Song and Why?” in the comments section of this blog post.

The best answer will win Two (2) Balcony Tickets worth P1,600 for the February 6, 2010, 8pm show!
