Beautiful! The Carole King Musical Manila (Review)

YES! I still can’t believe that Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is now playing in Manila!

It’s on top of my Broadway musical bucket list ever since I missed watching it in Broadway and West End. Watching it in Manila was extra special because it was more relatable with the Manila cast, and we witnessed Kyla Rivera, whom we watched In the Heights (2011), bloom into Carole King’s lead role (2019).

Best to watch it raw, without reading any reviews and in the company of your musical-lovin’ friends. Grab the last remaining shows of the first Meralco Theatre run that’s only until July 7, 2019.

Having said that, here’s why it is sooo beautiful to watch…

psychedelic 60’s

It was invigorating to see the bright neon colors, bold geometric patterns and mismatched design of the stage and the fashion statement of the era.

honoring the hustle

As entrepreneurs and independent media creators, it was inspiring for us to see how Carole hustled, struggled, failed and succeeded to conquer her dreams despite all odds.

couple partners

I always have high regard for entrepreneurs working together with their husbands/wives, because it’s so hard to balance career and love, with the kids, without losing your sanity, perspective or marriage itself.

musical autobiography

I loved how Carole’s early career was told via her musical creations, not to mention how the emotions of her breakup created the smashing album, Tapestry.

competition

Sometimes, a little friendly competition is what it takes to break through and perform your best. Thank you, to all our competitors who bring out the best in us.

doo-woop

This is a musical that gives you an opportunity to make your parents happy and relive the doo-woop music generation.

millennial 60’s

Awesome to see the next young generation of Filipino musical artists perform and excel on stage. Go! Go! Go!

natural woman

I almost shed a tear hearing the song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” after learning what Carole had to go through while creating and performing this song.

you’ve got a friend

I watched this musical with my long lost friend, Grace—rekindling our DLSU days, sharing our love for musicals and reflecting on what happened with our lives. No judgments, just like the good old days.

So beautiful!
