Three Guys and a Grill is a story of a Swiss guy named Tom Thurnherr, a Kiwi named Duncan Gates, and a Fil-Am named Frank Shrope, who shared a passion for grilled meats and opened a hotdog hole-in-the-wall in Brgy. Poblacion, Makati.
Their promise is to serve the “Best Hotdog, Best Bread” in Manila, with customized hotdogs from Santi’s and bread from Food Garage by Chef Sau del Rosario.
Here’s what to expect and what to order at Three Guys and a Grill…
It’s like a sausage fest here! The place aims to promote the sausage street food culture from around the world.
The best seats in the house are by the counter table with an outdoor view. It’s like having front row, air-conditioned seats to the life along the Makati streets.
I love that they serve my favorite craft draft–IPA from Engkanto. It matches well with their hotdogs without filling you up.
Three Colored Chips (P60)
The only thing fried on the menu is this medley of thinly sliced potato, ube, and kamote chips that you can order while you wait for your sausage.
A blast from the past! Nobody wanted to be caught opening these, but I secretly wanted to eat some and relive my Pinoy childhood memories.
Tom Thurnherr, a CTO Swiss guy living in Manila, loves their signature The Bird Dog.
The chicken dog is big but does not have any character by itself. But when combined with the curry, the sauces, and the toppings, it becomes one of the most favorite hotdogs, including my wife Rache’s.
Add a sauce (+P20). Home-made Ketchup, Guava Mustard, Home-made BBQ Sauce, Mayo, Sriracha Mayo.
All the sauces are home-made. You can really taste the difference in flavor from the commercially available ones.
This German dog is named after Thurnherr. I like the bite of the bratwurst and how it tastes like real hotdog. I also like the combination of the guava mustard and sauerkraut.
Add a topping (+P30). Fresh or Grilled Onion, Sliced Pickles, Jalapenos, Sauerkraut.
Because the toppings are also home-made, the flavors are more intense. You actually don’t need any additional topping.
Duncan Gates, the Kiwi Expat turned first time entrepreneur from New Zealand, loves The Fil-Am Frank.
The Fil-Am Frank (P180). All Beef Sausage, Slicked Pickles, Home-made BBQ Sauce, Grilled Onions, Jalapenos.
Named after their Fil-Am partner. Not your typical sausage as it’s made from beef and not pork.
Although thinner and more compact, the BBQ sauce made this a winning sausage.
My personal favorite! German Pork Bratwurst with premium truffle honey mustard and organic cheddar cheese toppings on a wheat sausage bun.
I love the story of the Three Guys! Their grill concept is focused on hotdogs for now, but I’m hoping to see them do other grilled meat specials like lamb chops from New Zealand, or even premium meats from Switzerland or the US.
Most of the hotdogs we tried were really good because the toppings and sauces have a lot of flavor while not overpowering the meat. The sausages have a good bite and taste how they should be.
Start with whether you prefer pork, beef, or chicken, and then choose the toppings you would like to go with your hotdog. I would go with the wheat bread, which is soft but still has the structure to hold the sausage. The white bread has a more baguette-y texture and is a good choice for those who prefer the European type of bread.
For chili heads, they unfortunately don’t have a Hungarian sausage option yet, but they do offer a Spicy Lamb sausage.
Budget about P500/head…you’ll be eating two hotdogs and a beer, for sure.
Congrats to Tom, Duncan, and Frank for opening your first restaurant concept in Manila! I’m excited to see what you guys would come up with next.
