LOCAVORE /ˈlōkəˌvôr/ is a Filipino Restaurant and Bar that proudly uses mostly organic ingredients grown locally in the Philippines. The name of the restaurant pertains to “One who eats goods grown locally whenever possible.”

Chef Mikel Zaguirre leveraged his experience as former head chef of La Regalade to bring out the flavor of each ingredient in a Filipino dish and present it in a colorful way.

We had our doubts when we tried the restaurant, but we were pleasantly surprised…

Locavore is located at Brixton St. in Barrio Kapitolyo, along the same road a Heima, Edgy Veggy, and Classic Confections.

There’s an al fresco dining area that transforms into a cool drinking place at night.
Locavore-16.jpgI like that they showcase the different sauces we grew up with at home.

The young Pinoy vibe of the interiors was designed by Eric Matic, husband of one of the co-owners, Tin Magsaysay-Matic.

Locavore Menu: A La Carte Menu | Bar Chow Menu | Drinks Menu

The menu is very exciting and reminds me of the Simple Lang approach, but with better combinations and execution.

✮ Singkamas, Manga, at Bagoong (P180 +10% service charge). Bagoong/Patis/Asukal/Chili/ Smoked Rock Salt/Pickled Organic Cucumber and Onion.

A simple Filipino appetizer we love to eat at home, presented using a more tactile approach and inspired by street food.

✮ Ginataang Kaldereta (P570 +10% service charge). Beef Short Ribs/Sauteed French Beans/ Stewed Tomatoes/Marble Potato/Cheese/Gata/Garlic and Shallot Confit.

The beef ribs are tender and the stewed tomato sauce with gata is flavorful. You’ll notice how colorful it is with the carrot, French beans, and tomato. Sarap!

✮ Sizzling Sinigang (P530 +10% service charge). Beef Short Ribs/Sauteed French Beans/Sampaloc Gravy/Garlic Confit.

Sizzling Bulalo meets deconstructed Sinigang. My personal favorite since I love sinigang. What makes this yummy is the sour sampaloc gravy reduction absorbed by the tender beef ribs. Add some chili and a bit of kalamansi for the best, addicting combination.

Best to eat here for lunch if you plan on going with the family and the kids. Make sure to reserve!

✮ Mac’s Boneless Fried Chicken (P240 +10% service charge). House Special Glazed Boneless Fried Chicken.

A hit with the boys–sweet soy glazed fried chicken with crispy crumbs and chicken skin. A Filipino take on Korean Fried Chicken.

✮ Lechon & Oyster Sisig (P400 +10% service charge)

We loved this! Fresh oysters with lechon bits, topped with chicken liver mayonnaise, then mixed with chili and kalamansi. The best sisig interpretation I’ve seen this 2014. 🙂

Pandesal Pudding (P180 +10% service charge). Custard/Pandesal/Cheese/Salated Egg/Dulce de Leche.

The desserts don’t look appetizing enough though. Best to skip these.

Overall, we were impressed with LOCAVORE. This is the best Filipino meal we’ve had in 2014, and I love the hip, young Filipino vibe of the place.

We recommend starting with the Singkamas, Manga, at Bagoong. Then order our favorites–Ginataang Kaldereta, Sizzling Sinigang, and Lechon & Oyster Sisig. Skip the dessert. Budget about P500/head.

The restaurant transforms into a hipster drinking place at night, and they say their Kinilaw line-up and Don Papa cocktails are worth going back for.

Congratulations to Chef Mikel Zaguirre and the rest of the Locavore team for the yummy addition to the Filipino Food scene. 🙂
