RAMEN CRAZE: 10 Most Awesome Ramens in Manila 2013!

2014 Update! Read: RAMEN WARS: 10 Best Ramen, Eating Habits, and Social Buzz in Manila!

Here’s a year end wrap-up of our Top 10 Favorite Ramens in Manila this 2013!

Ramen Nagi Butao4863.jpg

RAMEN NAGI offers a gourmet version of ramen that is hailed as the best in Tokyo. It has been awarded the top spot in the National Ramen of the Year Competitions for the last two years (2011 and 2012). In Hongkong, the Ramen Nagi franchise is known as BUTAO, after its popular signature ramen, which Filipinos line up hours for just to get a taste. 🙂

Finally, Ramen Nagi has opened in Manila at the 5th Floor of SM Aura Premier. The Manila franchise is owned by Plains & Prints couple founders Roxanne and Erickson Farillas, together with Michael James Chua, Carissa Coscolluela, Enti Coscolluela, and Avi Siy-Chua.

As the Filipino foodie’s taste for ramen matures, one would prefer more rich and bolder flavors vs. the lighter variety. And once you taste the richer gourmet version of Ramen Nagi, there’s no going back to light and lesser quality ramen.

You’ve got to check out why foodies are raving about Ramen Nagi Butao…

So far, RAMEN NAGI has the best ramen in town, especially if you are looking for a richer gourmet ramen version. We love the Black KingGreen King, and Ebi King. I can’t wait for them to offer the Truffle Ramen King version! The Boys love the Butao King version. 🙂

Each bowl of ramen is already a complete and satisfying meal. They only offer and specialize in ramen for now. I hope that they make dessert options available soon.

Budget is P500/person. Make sure to visit early and during the non-peak times to avoid the crowd.

KICHITORA: Paitan Ramen Zenbu no Se and Tan Tan Mien! @KichitoraPH

KICHITORA is a ramen chain concept by Filipino and Japanese partners, which opened its first branch in Shibuya, Tokyo and subsequently in SM Megamall about a year ago. Just recently, they opened another branch in Glorietta 5. The name “Kichitora” literally means “Lucky Tiger”.

I often ask foodies what their favorite ramen is and Kichitora is consistently mentioned. We finally got to try it and I can see why they love it here. 🙂

Check out our Kichitora experience…

I’ve heard yummy stories about Chef Vicky’s private dining in Baguio from foodies raving about the experience. We met Chef Vicky in Mercato Centrale, with her stall selling her yummy goodies from Baguio, when we first opened in 2010.

She offers an 8-course, French-inspired, strictly-by-reservation private dining in her lovely home in Baguio. She only accepts strictly one group at a time, with a minimum of 6 persons.

There is no menu, so just be prepared to be surprised with the 3-hour, 8-course Degustation Meal.

KETCHUP is a Food Community composed of Baguio home grown Food concepts which includes Canto, Happy Tummy, Rancho Norte, Rumah Sate, and Green Pepper.

We love the outdoor feel under the pine trees, the affordable food and it’s a nice food stop after visiting Wright Park, Mines View Park, and The Mansion.

This will be an ongoing collection of posts of our own experiences with the different restos at Ketchup.

In my search for the best restaurant in Baguio, I asked Mitos, the Hill Station owner, on where does she eat good food in Baguio. She shared me this secret home-based Japanese place called Chaya.

CHAYA stands for “authentic Japanese cuisine, wholesome food and healthy lifestyle” by CHAYA Chef, Sonoko Taguchi.

I was skeptical at first, but we were blown away by our Chaya experience…

Green Pastures by Chef Robby Goco-33.jpg

GREEN PASTURES is the farm-to-table, back-to-basics, organic resto of Cyma’s Chef Robby Goco. Most of the ingredients are proudly locally-sourced, they don’t use MSG or canned ingredients, and nearly all of the items are homemade.

Its name is inspired by the desire to look for greener pastures and something a lot better than the status quo, especially when it comes to the Manila dining scene. Unlike that of its restaurant neighbors, Green Pastures’ concept is not a rehash. The excitement for this place is actually reminiscent of when Cyma first opened in Shangri-La Mall.

Yes, the Chef did it again! This is, so far, the BEST among the many successful restos he launched in Manila over the years. This is definitely one of the must-try restaurants of 2013. 🙂

GREEN PASTURES by Chef Robby Goco: Farm-to-table, Organic Restaurant

Overall, we really admire the great execution of Green Pastures’ farm-to-table restaurant concept, focusing on the use of organic and locally-sourced ingredients and with the committment to back-to-basics preparation by avoiding MSG and canned or commercially packaged products.

We recommend the house-made cheeses, the innovative pasta combinations, the Kitayama Wagyu burger, the popcorn crunch ice cream, and the organic honeycomb dessert. And how could we forget Tequila Joe’s iconic salpicao? 🙂

Budget is P700/head and make sure you’re there early.

The facade of the restaurant looks commercialized because it’s in a mall and is beside other commercialized restos. It would have been nice if it were in an outdoor-type mall or stand-alone location like the original Cyma in Boracay. I also hope they take the necessary steps to ensure the freshness and cleanliness of their salad ingredients moving forward.

Congratulations to Chef Robby Goco for a well-executed Green Pastures!
