The Flying Chef’s Chocolate and Bacon Empanada!

Rockwell UTT Winner #17:
THE FLYING CHEF CASA EMPANADA
UTTrating3.73

118 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
136 foodies rated 4- I love it!
94 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
50 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
10 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

At first, I dismissed this as just another empanada. But during the Rockwell UTT, when I asked people about their top bets, they kept voting for the chocolate bacon empanada.

I finally tried it and liked the contrasting sweet and salty flavors. It was the first time I tasted this combination used in an empanada. This would be good to bring to potluck parties or give as a foodie gift this Christmas. 🙂

Congratulations to The Flying Chef’s Casa Empanada for winning in Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test!

Empire French Macarons!

Rockwell UTT Winner #18:
EMPIRE FRENCH MACAROONS

UTTrating3.72

115 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
145 foodies rated 4- I love it!
106 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
46 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
10 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

I like macarons that are executed well– with a smooth glossy shell, crispy feel on the first bite, chewy as you eat along, and with the flavors exploding in your mouth.

My top  French Macarons in Manila are Lusso’s Macarons,  Empire Macarons, and Christa’s Kitchen Macarons.

I personally like Empire’s Pistacchio. Some foodies recommend the Chili Choco and Salted Caramel flavors.

Congratulations to Empire for winning in Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test!

Yoh-gee’s Frozen Kefir

Rockwell UTT Winner #19:
YOH-GEE’S FROZEN KEFIR
UTTrating3.68

123 foodies rated 5- Awesome! I would recommend it!
121 foodies rated 4- I love it!
102 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
47 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
18 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Yoh-gee is an Ultimate Taste Test 5.0 Top 5 Winner (See: YOH-GEE Premium Froyo) and one of our favorite healthy premium frozen yogurt desserts in Mercato Centrale.

I love their Frozen Kefir, which is more maasim than the frozen yogurt. (Note: See how Kefir looks like in this post: Kefir-licious.) It’s just good to know that what we’re eating is healthier. I like the plain version because it is still creamy but has that strong, fermented kefir taste. It is a good and healthy substitute if you are craving for dessert.

Congratulations to Yoh-gee for doing well in Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test!

138 foodies rated 3- We had a good time.
65 foodies rated 2- It is OK.
11 foodies rated 1- Thanks, but it could be better.

Hyphy’s, which serves “San Francisco – Philippine Cuisine”, is Chef Bruce Lim’s second restaurant. It actually got mixed reviews when it opened. (Read: Hyphy’s SanFo-Philippine Cuisine by Chef Bruce Lim) For the Rockwell UTT, Hyphy’s presented a simple but delicious pasta that had a combination of salty fish with kalamansi to balance it.

Congratulations to Hyphy’s for making the cut in the Ultimate Taste Test!

Sugarhouse is one of our favorite dessert places when it comes to classic sweets. In the Rockwell UTT, they offered the Yema Balls and Sylvannas to approving foodies. Personally, I like the yema balls (although they were a bit sweeter).

Congratulations to Sugarhouse!

This special buko pie concoction served in a martini glass is my favorite dessert at Chef Bruce’s Chef’s Table restaurant. This high-end version of the buko pie is velvety and creamy. An interesting take on a Filipino classic.

Congratulations to Chef’s Table for winning in the Rockwell Ultimate Taste Test!

Jamaican Pattie Shop is an all-time favorite. Even before I started the blog, their beef pattie is our comfort snack whenever we are in the mall. I personally love the Beef Pinatubo because I prefer my pattie extremely hot and spicy. 🙂

Congratulations, Jamaican Patties, for capturing the foodies’ hearts in Rockwell’s Ultimate Taste Test!

TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil (A Review)

Title : Hoop Dancer2 Picture credit : Daniel Desmarais © 2010 Cirque du Soleil Inc. | Costume credit : Kym Barrett

I got the chance to  watch the opening night of TOTEM (at the AT&T park in San Francisco last October 28, 2011.) This is my 5th Cirque du Soleil show.   I had a great time with my memorable Varekai Act and I was hoping to experience the wonder again.

Totem  is an acrobatic show about man’s evolution from our primitive origins to our current human state. This is a touring show that started in Montreal last April 2010. It is performed in Cirque du Soleil’s signature big top tent known as Grand Chapiteau.

Here is our Totem experience:
