Life is too short to waste on the usual day-to-day activities and meaningless travel. Over the 5+ years of exploring the Philippines, I’ve discovered the most awesome adventures guaranteed to make your hearts race and rave. These are the experiences that left indelible memories in my mind. I’m sharing these with you because these are the adventures that make the Philippines truly awesome!
Dek A is now my favorite authentic Thai restaurant in Manila. Dek means young and A stands for number 1 in class (as in Grade A).
Feb, who owns and runs the restaurant, is half-Filipina and half-Thai. Although she lives in Thailand with her Filipina mom, they decided to open a restaurant in Manila. You might ask, “What makes the restaurant authentic?” Well, they have a Thai cook AND their ingredients are sourced from Thailand every other week.
The days of affordable but mediocre Thai food in the metro are over. 🙂 You have to check out Dek A in Makati…
The travel bug bit me while I was sitting and watching the 270-degree view of the sea and sky on Kota Beach in Bantayan, Cebu in 2006. The feeling was surreal — I couldn’t believe that nature could be so awesome that no words could fully describe it. (You’ll know the feeling when you experience it.)
I realized that if there is a place like that one in Cebu, there must be a lot more places like it hidden in the 7,107 islands of the Philippines. This inspired Our Awesome Planet’s advocacy to inspire and touch Filipinos’ hearts and minds, to make them realize that our country is truly a beautiful place.
I’ve been to most of the best beaches in the Philippines, except for one (which is reserved for our 10th year wedding anniversary). Now, I would like to share with you our beach discoveries (after 4 years of traveling almost every other week!)
Thank you to all those who expressed their support for Our Awesome Planet. We felt the love and hugs of family, friends and readers who matter most to us.
Our Awesome Planet is NOT connected with, compensated by, or represented by any PR firm that would resort to restaurant extortion. We abhor that practice.
We don’t get advertising from restaurants or places we feature, and freebies pre- or post-blog posts to avoid conflict of interest. Otherwise, we disclose it specifically at the end of each blog post.
We are committed to promoting the best restaurants, the best home-based businesses and the most awesome places in the Philippines. We blog about happy experiences and we learned from our past mistakes not to blog about unpleasant experiences.
Our Awesome Planet will continue to document the food and travel adventures of our family.
One thing is for sure — we will have a Bigger & Better Blogosphere in Manila after this expose.
Our conscience is clear and we do hope that the truth will come out soon.
Full Disclosure: Nothing to disclose. I am not related to, connected with or compensated in any way by any of the establishments we feature in our blog posts. I’m not connected with, compensated by, or represented by any PR firm.
P.S. My favorite chef, who cooks the best lengua that I’ve ever tasted in Manila, is interested to join Mercato Centrale! Watch out for him there! For sure, foodies will rave about his food!
Whether you are a local traveler or foreign tourist just starting to discover the beauty of the Philippines, here’s a list of places you shouldn’t dare miss:
WORLD HERITAGE SITES OF THE PHILIPPINES
Mouth of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
1. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the must-visit places among the World Heritage Sites of the Philippines. Its natural 8.2 km navigable underground river is believed to be the world’s longest. The river can be found beneath a beautiful limestone karst mountain called St. Paul (named after one of its peaks that resembles the dome of St. Paul Cathedral in Italy).
This national park is one of the centers of biodiversity conservation in Palawan. In fact, you can see monkeys and large monitor lizards greeting you on your way to the mouth of the cave. Currently, it is one of the strongest contenders (out of the top 28 world finalists) for the 7 New Natural Wonders of the World Competition.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is doing an awesome job in promoting tourism via social media. They recruited the top travel bloggers in each country and asked them to blog about Chiangmai’s Medical Tourism.
Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho is an award-winning TV show on one of the largest networks in the country. Jessica Soho has been a constant presence on Philippine television for a long time now, establishing her mass influence, integrity and solid journalistic reputation through the years.
Her show is the first one to feature and acknowledge the Food Bloggers on primetime TV. It’s also the first time that Joel of Market Manila, Lori of Dessert Comes First and I appeared in one TV show feature — we were all excited about it.
I’m looking for two to three people who will work with me for the next 6 months to scale up Our Awesome Planet in 2011. These people will be involved with running existing projects, marketing them online via social media, and conceptualizing / executing new exciting internet projects.
My goal is to offer first hand experience with launching awesome projects in Manila online or offline, with full interaction with the market. After the apprenticeship, you should be able to start your own projects or find a great job working as a social media practitioner.
Finally, I am releasing My Awesome Life Book, a travel log planner for 2011 on a limited edition basis! It is a travel log, planner, and guide book in one. I am excited because this is my first published work 🙂 Thanks to Belle de Jour team for making this happen!
I am only releasing 1,000 copies to friends of Our Awesome Planet. This would also serve as a beta group to provide inputs for the 2012 travel log planner.
