(I wrote this article for the Mothers and Darlings Support Group (MADS) for expats in Manila.)
1. Immerse yourself in the Filipino Christmas Culture. Nine days before Christmas, a lot of Filipinos attend Simbang Gabi (the early morning mass) as a novena and to prepare themselves for Christmas Day. Filipinos stay up late, waiting for December 25 to come around, to celebrate Noche Buena with family and friends, culminating in the opening of gifts.
2. Enjoy the Christmas Cleaning. The week after Christmas is actually an ideal time to get things done because most people will be traveling outside Manila. This is the best time to purge your files, or do some cleaning and renewal in your work. This is the most laidback period because you are already relieved of gift-giving responsibilities and people are still on holiday mode.
3. See the Giant Lanterns Festival in the Christmas Capital of the Philippines. The most celebrated festival during the Christmas season can be found in San Fernando, Pampanga. Various barangays compete for the honor of having the best and biggest giant lantern display in the country. The lanterns are at least 18ft in diameter and are operated manually to light up and dance to upbeat music.
LOOP is the restaurant school of the Institute of Culinary Arts and Food Service (ICF). The name is based on the Infinity symbol, which represents “elegant flourish in Calligraphy and fine cuisine”. But I think it got its name from its location in the new FEU Building along Zuellig Loop, Buendia.
The restaurant is great for a first date (as it is very conducive to conversation), or for eating dinner before watching a play at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater in RCBC Plaza across it. LOOP is open until 10pm.
I’m excited to share with you the preview of Our Awesome Planet TV to be shown in time for summer 2011. 🙂 It will be broadcasted on The Filipino Channel to entice our kababayans to explore the Philippines more. 🙂
We are also planning to broadcast it on a local ABS-CBN affiliated channel on Friday, 12mn timeslot. But for those who won’t be able to catch it on TV, we will broadcast it on OurAwesomePlanet.TV!
2010 is an exciting Groupon year for Manila! Groupon is a shortcut for “Group Coupons”, which are typically wholesale bargain deals offered online, leveraging the power of social media.
These “Groupon clone” sites would typically negotiate a deal with a lifestyle product or service partner (minimum of 50% but as high as 90% off). Usually, there is a minimum number for the deal to be “ON” and the deal is for a limited time, typically one day to a week. The sites earn by getting a profit sharing with the supplier, depending on the amount of the deal.
Starting August, we saw Groupon sites launched one after another, which makes online bargain hunting more exciting! Here are the 12 contenders (including our own Awesome.PH site):
Hilot is an ancient art of healing that uses long, deep strokes and stretching techniques to diagnose and treat muscular and skeletal ailments. This is one of the aspects of our heritage that we are proud of because it has been passed down from generation to generation even before the Spaniards came.
Hilot is very popular in the provinces because it is a low-cost healing alternative, but in most spas in Manila, it is being promoted as a Filipino massage — more focused on relaxation than treatment.
Borough is an interesting restaurant that offers a slice of New York, serving up the very best of comfort food in the metro. New Yorkers now based in Manila are raving about the food. We tried it, and we agree with them.
The food is exciting and the presentation is not run-of-the-mill (ex. using a brown bag to “present” the fries). Borough seems to be out-of-place at the Podium mall, though. It should have opened in Bonifacio Global City, where it would have been an instant hit even on opening day.
