Boracay Island

What’s New in Boracay in 2010? (Part 1 of 2)

Update: BORACAY FOOD: 10 Most Awesome Boracay Restaurants! (2018)

We will always love Boracay despite the fact that some people already dismiss it because it is overdeveloped and regarded as an ecological disaster.

We love it not only because of its night life and endless parties night after night, we love it because of the “Boracay Spirit” of living life to the fullest and communing with nature in all its glorious beauty. Everyone who visits Boracay imbibes this spirit, and those who get addicted to it decide to stay on the island.

Every year, Boracay tries to reinvent itself. Here is what’s new in the ever-changing scene in Boracay…

My Marathon Story

My Dream Marathon @ Nuvali

Read Related Blog Posts first:

I actually had a rewarding but traumatic first marathon last 2007, and it took me another 3 years to overcome my fear and find enough reasons to conquer my second 42k marathon.

My first marathon was inspired by my boss, Jim Lafferty, who led the first batch of P&G marathoners to the finish line. I finished after 7 hours : 43 minutes, and I was hospitalized because of potassium and electrolyte imbalance in the body due to dehydration. This was caused by two things:

  • I had loose bowel movement in Petron at the corner of Buendia/Makati Avenue triggered by the orange slice I ate.
  • The marathon started at 4.30am and ended close to the hottest temperature at 12nn. I experienced sweating salt literally because there was no more sweat in my body.

My second marathon was i
nspired by the lady version of the inspirational “Jim Lafferty” spirit, Jaymie Pizzarro of the best running blog in the country — The Bull Runner.  She organized TBR Dream Marathon for newbie marathoners who dream of conquering their first ever 42k marathon. Jim was the race director and he even confirmed that he has never seen any other organized marathon around the world exclusively for newbies.

Cicou Ala Carte Buffet Power Breakfast

Update July 11, 2012: This restaurant is now closed and moved to BRASSERIE CI COU.

There’s nothing like a hearty breakfast to start your day.

I’ve been in search of the Best Breakfast in Manila because I’m always looking for places to eat after a good run (more than the usual fast food places). Most of the restaurants still don’t cater to the breakfast crowd and, at best, they only serve breakfast on a Sunday.

Cicou has a daily ala carte buffet breakfast for only P850 (+10% sc) where you can order anything that you want from the menu and as many as you want. This is available from 6am-10.30am daily and extends until 2pm on Sundays.

I like ala carte buffets because the food is not prepared beforehand. They only cook it when you order it. You can also drink as much hot chocolate and cappuccino as you want.

Beer Pairing Basics @ Chateau 1771

We are constantly on the lookout for ways to enhance our food experience. Last Wednesday, we had the chance to do just that as we officially had our first food and beer pairing degustation. I do hope Chateau 1771 offers the degustation menu in their resto for other foodies to try the beer and food combinations.

Here are our insights and learnings from the beer pairing experience with San Miguel Lifestyle Brews…

Must-Go Mayoyao Expedition!

One of my travel goals this year is to go to Mayoyao in Ifugao, which is famed to be one of the most beautiful communities with rice terraces in the Cordilleras. My friend JP Alipio, who was our master tour guide during our Batad trip (see:  Ultimate Guide to Batad, Banaue), is arranging the awesome Mayoyao trip this coming June 12-14 and August 28-30. I’m joining one of the tours and I would like to invite you to join Cordillera Expeditions.

I asked JP to personally share details via video of what to expect in the trip and why you should go to Mayoyao!

8 Tips for an Awesome Ultimate Taste Test 4.0: The Beer Pairing Experience

Also supported by:

We are excited about one of the biggest events of Our Awesome Planet (OAP) and MASED Foundation, in partnership with San Miguel Lifestyle BrewsThe Ultimate Taste Test 4.0! About 1,000+ foodies will taste and critique food offerings from 52 suppliers showcasing the latest foodie delights in Manila. 🙂

In November 2009’s Ultimate Taste Test 3.0 (with 30 suppliers), some foodies started eating like it was a buffet, so even with just the first few food suppliers, they were stuffed already. Once you feel stuffed, the rest of the taste test event would most probably be ruined for you — we don’t want that to happen.

The key is to pace your tummy, carefully choose which supplier to test based on your interest, and accept that it would be impossible for you to taste all the offerings of the 52 suppliers.

To help you along, here are:

Bird Watching Trip with the Boys @ Nuvali

We want Aidan and Joshua to appreciate nature as early as possible, so we went on a Bird Watching trip in Nuvali. We went with the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP) to check out the bird watching places in the area.

One of the most interesting bird watching sites is the colony nest of the Bee-Eater Birds. It is just right past the first security guard outpost and way before the Bird Sanctuary. There are no signs leading to it. You can spot the colony nest by looking for the holes on the side of the hill.

Legally Blonde The Musical in Manila!

The second half of the 2010 Theater Season in Manila is getting exciting. Nikki Gil (of Coke commercial fame) plays the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical in Manila! The show is an adaptation of the Hollywood movie starring Reese Witherspoon. In case you haven’t watched the film, the story is basically about Elle Woods’ transformation from a frivolous sorority star to a Harvard Law student as she pursues the love of her life who dumped her for a more “serious” girl.

Thunderbird Roars

Thunderbird Resort is the best resort in the La Union area. It is located in Poro Point Freeport Zone, San Fernando, La Union (about 6 hours away from Manila). This is quite near the La Union airport and about 30 minutes away from the popular San Juan Surf Resort (for those interested in surfing).

The place created a buzz when it opened because it was the first to provide a Santorini-themed resort — ahead of Bellarocca. Unlike Bellarocca, which is located on an island, Thunderbird is part of the La Union mainland and is easily accessible by car. Also, the resort has a decent Mediterranean restaurant called Olives, which makes up for its so-so buffet breakfast.

For the first time, we brought all the boys on a road trip to Thunderbird. I would like to share with you our Thunderbird experience…
