“Dear, it’s Kalamunda and not Sylvia’s Garden…,” Sylvia Miguel corrected me last Sunday. Kalamunda is an Australian aboriginal term, which means “home in the bush.” (Yeah, Sylvia’s Garden could be easily confused with Sonya’s Garden…)
You have to literally drive to uncharted Tagaytay area with no signs and just views of one farm after another. Kalamunda is right beside the new Massimo in Tagaytay, hidden just behind the borders of Tagaytay and Silang, Cavite.
The main highlight of this foodie trip is the cleanest-tasting lechon by Sylvia and Carlos Miguel.
UPDATE 4/22/09: Jack Canfield had to be hospitalized due to a serious back injury. This event is cancelled and postponed indefinitely.

Manila loves Jack Canfield because of his Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His claim to fame is that he was rejected a number of times before he was able to successfully publish his book. Jack owns the record of having the Most Books on New York Times Best Seller list in the Guinness Book of World Records. He is one of the role models / mentors, Filipinos can learn from.

“Jack Canfield: Yes! We were rejected by 123 publishers all told. The first time we went to New York, we visited with about a dozen publishers in a two day period with our agent, and nobody wanted it. They all said it was a stupid title, that nobody bought collections of short stories, that there was no edge–no sex, no violence. Why would anyone read it? We then kept going to publishers for another couple of months. It was rejected by another 22 publishers and then our agent said, “Sorry boys, I can’t sell it.” So we went to the American Bookseller’s Association Convention in Anaheim and walked the floor from booth to booth asking publishers if they would be interested in our book. There were 4,000 booths there! I don’t think we hit every one of them, but close to it.
I love Southeast Asian flavors. Fortunately for me, there’s a new foodie spot for Chinese-Indonesian cuisine in the eskinitas of Salcedo Village. Talking Tongues is owned and managed by (KK) Gertruida Nelwan, an Indonesian who decided to live in Manila.
This is one restaurant where Rache and I agree to disagree in our foodie assessment. I love it because of its spicy dishes (they appeal to the Bicolano in me) and unique flavor, but she hates it because she feels there is something missing in its ingredients, flavor or the way the food is cooked.
I’m not sure if this is just a guy or girl thing, but let me know your own assessment of Talking Tongues…

The family celebrated my parents’ March 11 Wedding Anniversary in Le Souffle @ the Fort for classic French cuisine. The Le Souffle staff was kind enough to create this cake with greetings after I reserved for this special occasion.

We reap what we sow.
Oftentimes we hear older parents complaining about how their children seem distant, how the kids tend to be closer to their friends instead of their families. They claim that their children do not confide in them at all. When we inspect their family lives, we realize that the parents themselves have not spent time with their children and may have delegated their roles to hired nannies. They may have been too controlling and highly critical, too, causing their children to seek growth and freedom outside the home, away from their parents’ grasp. Years down the road, these children (now all grown-up) look back and decide that they do not want to repeat history. They desire to be understanding and supportive parents who will be there for their children no matter which path their children opt to take. This resolution has paved the way for the new breed of parents.
I’m not really a fan of any Raymund Magdaluyo restaurant (of Red Crab fame) but I admire his creativity in conceptualizing restaurants. The latest ones are these tandem establishments specializing in seafood (BluFish) and meat (The Flying Pig).
His successful restos are targeted towards the 17-25 y.o. demographic and are usually for family and group gatherings. The concept is quite focused on a niche market like seafood, all-meat, American or breakfast. The menu and ambiance are nicely integrated with the concept. What I don’t like about the restaurants are the impersonal service and sub-par quality of the food.
