Plagiarism is the highest form of flattery? Website Jacking is Not!

By

Original article:
Our Awesome Planet: The Perfect “Dampa” in Seaside Macapagal Blvd! (Dec. 23, 2005)

Plagiarized article:
Foodfor2.com: Dampa at Macapagal Ave – Shylin Tating Restaurant (April 19, 2006)

Have you been plagiarized before? How did you deal with it?

Anton

UPDATE 8/22/06 — Finally the guy revised all the posts already! Even just an apology would do but I guess he is scared. I’m glad he also changed the plagiarized Lori’s posts and starting to come clean. The google DMCA complaint did it 🙂

April 28, 2006 Update: I wrote the website owner about the plagiarized article as advised by Lorelle in her posts What Do You Do When Someone Steals Your Content. Thanks to Nina of for this great article and suggestion!

  1. God, that’s terrible! They even took the pictures! I haven’t had any experience with plagiarism (because I hardly write anything interesting anyway), but I know more than a couple whose writings and photos have been taken without giving due credit.
Have you gotten in touch with the owner of that blog? I think that should be your first course of action. Have you taken a screenshot of the website with the content? If not, I suggest you take one now in case the owner suddenly deletes that entry.
I have bookmarked a blog before dealing with plagiarism, and I hope it would help: http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2006/04/10/what-do-you-do-when-someone-steals-your-content/

  2. oh my god!!! ive seen those articles before… i though he was one of your circle of food blogging friends with whom you share reviews….ang kapal naman…
i saw also several of ‘dessertcomesfirst’ articles like the M Cafe and Heaven and Eggs entry…
ang kapal naman nun…he copied everything word for word…pati si my Bin and my Boo kinopya nya..cant he even create his own characters for gad’s sake!!! he even called himself LOR!!! in those articles…ang kapal na ang bobo pa! sorry for the bluntness ha ..just couldnt think of anything more apt to describe him
for a lot of people who look at yours and lori’s blogs for guidance..its very unfair that the thief would ‘review” a place without spending time and money….tsk tsk tsk…
a lot of his articles are stolen, i noticed….

  3. I compared the articles side-by-side and there is only one conclusion: This is a blatant example of plagiarism. The guy did not even have the decency to at least make his Shylin Tating pictures and text seem familiar with Anton’s shots. Grammar and syntax is a dead giveaway. Kung manggagaya ka, gawin mo namang kahawig sa ginagayahan mo…This is of course on top of the evils of using someone’s property without his/her permission.
Not sure why this site/article is still up…I guess this is the major disadvantage of the Internet. There is no central controlling body to impose punishment to offenders…The closest I can think of are hackers who “bomb” sites until they go offline…

  4. ang kapal naman..you can’t even describe him as an author…maybe an author of chop chop entries from various bloggers!

  5. hi!i stumbled in your blogs once and find it very interesting.i was even inspired to make my own food blog.that plagiarism thing was so low.it really feels bad when someone copied what you wrote/did and claim it as his/her own.i made a testimonial for my boyfriend before and when i stumbled into one of our classmates page in friendster, i saw that she gave his boyfriend the same testimonial i personally did for my boyfriend.its not the same as your experience but it is still a form of plagiarism.God Bless!

  6. sikat na talaga ang “our awesome planet” anton!
well, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that….
that blog was just a little bit too sincere!

  7. Thanks guys for the comments… the saga continues and I’m trying to contact the owner, and see if we can convince him to stop whatever he is doing.
    Anton

  8. gee..if this person wants to do online restaurant reviews, he should be ready to PAY for 1 meal – at the very least! who is the owner of that blog anyway? ang kunat at ang kapal!

  9. how horrible…even the first two paragraphs was copied from your blog. Bad! he should at least erase the whole article and make an apology here at ur site. Hmp! Sikat kana talaga anton! =)

  10. hey anton,
sumisikat ka na talaga, di ba sabi ko sa yo? : ) one look at that other article and i knew you wrote it. plus the pictures were a dead give-away. don’t take this sitting down. make them write a public apology.
    – your pseudo angel…

  11. @Mita,
my sentiments exactly! I’m glad that you put it in the comment because I was planning to unleash my emotions in this post but I tried to restrain myself.
    Thanks for empathizing…
    @ Mindz
    hi again, mindz!
Yeah, I’m trying to get that apology not only to me but a few other bloggers too. I’m still trying to contact the owner of the blog…

  12. @ Joelle
Thanks Joelle! I think that guy is doing it intentionally and trying to bring more traffic to his site… I already tried out a few strategies on how to stop this guy’s activities… I’ll update this blog on the development.
    @Julie
thanks julie, my pseudo angel 🙂
thanks for the encouragement and I’m trying a few tactics now to find out who this guy and how we can stop his illegal activities.

  13. gosh… somehow i can relate. hehe.
it really feels bad, but it’s ok, we all know the truth… hope this doesn’t discourage you. sadly, there will always be people like this.

  14. OMIGOD! that blog is a collected collection of plagiarized works pala!! what gall! even lori (desertcomesfirst) posted here pala!!! that site should be flamed to pieces!

    lori said…
Thank you for pointing me to your blog from the comment you left on mine. I’m not keen however on you reprinting my article and photos without you asking for my permission. You haven’t even acknowledged the writer of the article. Either email me or remove the article immediately. Thank you.

  15. AH, the wonders of CUT & PASTE. I visited the site and it seems that the site is a hodge-podge of other food blogsite. Naks, parang The Mother of all Plagiarized sites. Baka nagtitipid yung tao, kaya cut&paste nalang. Di na nya kailangan gumastos, may review na may libreng picture pa. At hindi basta picture na galing cellphone. hehehehe.
Anyway, I’m not sure if this is helpful but you can look into the following:
    1. Email google adsense that the site contains illegal or plagiarized content. [if he’s earning from goggle adsense.]
    2. It seems that it is hosted at blogger.com, you can also check with them. [para delete agad]
If that two doesn’t work, may kilala akong mangkuklam and hitman. =)
Baka matauhan yung tao ang mag post ng isang malaking…
    “I’m sorry, ‘noh!” (ala-GMA) =)

  16. hey anton!
i know exactly how you feel. There’s this guy who has been copying my blogposts a couple of times before. But when my gf brought it to his attention, he had the decency to erase the copied blogs.
Boy was i wrong. Mas nakakahiya yung next niya ginawa. Take a look at these…
    http://dineanddrink.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_dineanddrink_archive.html
—> a post i made after sinagot ako ng GF ko
    http://www.friendster.com/testimonials.php?uid=2491124
—> check out the testimony made on 2/13/2006
If the girl that was given the plagiarized testimonial just knew…

  17. na ganyan na din ako twice. and i demanded na tanggalin yung post pati photos. good thing tinanggal din naman with apology.
it all ended well. at kinalimutan ko na yun

  18. hi! i have noticed that carlos lim of foodfor2 STILL REFUSES TO APOLOGIZE OR RETRACT WHAT HE STOLE FROM YOU. as a long time lurker and fan, i am very angry at this and i and a bunch of my pals are presently flaming this sorry dude’s shoutbox in his page and we wont stop until he apologizes because that is what we believe is right, and because we roll like that. i am inviting readers here who share my warped sense of righteousness and vengeance to join me there. just write your indignation at his shoutbox on his page. he does read it and erase it everyday so its better to check it once in a while.
‘ika nga ni mike enriquez- carlos lim, di ka namin tatantanan!!!

  19. oh wait. i think carlos lim got the heads up on this. he removed his shout box today. lets see what we can do….

  20. I have e-mailed google adsense to report foodfor2’s violation of their policies. maybe if we send more complaints adsense can do something about it.

  21. hey beelzebub,
Truly appreciate what you are doing for me and the other bloggers plagiarized… for some reason, this carlos lim person is not apologetic and really doing it maliciously. All he needs to do is bring down the plagiarized post and apologize…
Let me know if you have some more ideas.
    Thanks so much!!
    Anton

  22. first off, i figure this bastard carlos lim is in it to generate ads for his blog- and the best way to seek retribution is to hit where it hurts most. that is why i contacted adsense.

The website Foodfor2.com plagiarized the original article in the article entitled: Dampa at Macapagal Ave – Shylin Tating Restaurant posted last April 19, 2006. (permalink: http://foodfor2.com/2006/04/dampa-at-macapagal-ave-shylin-tating.html)

You continue to republish original copywrited content from Our Awesome
Planet (anton.blogs.com) on your website, located at http://www.foodfor2.com.

  25. great, anton! we could never really improve our community if we just let these abusive idiots go on their merry ways while we just mutter under our breaths, an active solution must be done. i hope adsense can do something about this.

  26. Hi Anton, I remember Lori telling us about this atrocity, stupidity, and sheer affrontery. I hope your actions have forced the blog off the net. He probably got a lot of visitors because of this, so he won “something” in the end, but honestly, stuff like that should be banned and the owners sent to Coventry forever.

  27. glad this went well, anton. looks like the plagiarist carlos lim did remove your content from his pathetic little website. hahaha! pathetic as in doing a restaurant review on tapa king!! anyway, did foodfor2 apoligize to you privately?
on a personal note, i have become a regular visitor of foodfor2, because the site makes me laugh.

  28. unfortunately hindi pa rin nagapologize. Kahit simple note lang tinanggal niya nanaman na yung entries. hahaha. Natakot siguro duon sa google DMCA complaint.
well I guess he achieved his purpose of being notoriously funny.
one of these days we’ll know how this guy really is.
