Ultimate Taste Test Event-5

Having lechon in the Ultimate Taste Test was a very good idea. One whole native lechon was served by Sabroso Lechon, which got a rating of 3.6 out of 5.0. Most people liked it because of its crispy skin and flavorful meat (which was a bit salty) -- characteristic of how lechon is made in Visayas. Some rated it "Just OK" because they did not notice the difference between Sabroso's offering and other lechons out there.

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised that the skin remained crispy after 3-4 hours after first serving it. However, they used a lechon sauce that did not match well with the meat. It's better to eat it without the sauce. In future Ultimate Taste Test events, we will make sure to have one lechon supplier that can offer a unique lechon taste. :)

What is the difference between the Sans Rival by Star Reyes versus other sans rivals out there?

Personally, I didn't notice any difference. Most of the people in the Ultimate Taste Test liked it and it got a rating of 3.6 out of 5.0. It was a bit too sweet and the tasting portions were a bit too big for people to enjoy. The most important thing, my wife (who is a sans rival-monster) loves both the Sans Rival and Silvannas.


What is the difference between a Sans Rival and a Silvanna?

Sans rival is made from meringue, butter cream and lots of cashews. Silvannas are made using the same cream and meringue but in an oblong shape and with a softer cake texture. Star Reyes' Silvannas use crushed pound cake and less cashew than the Sans Rival. Different suppliers usually have their own way of creating the meringue and cream based on their own well-guarded recipes.

Kefir is starting to become a buzzword in the Healthy Circle. All I know is that it is 100% probiotic like drinking Yakult, it is more nutritious than yogurt, and Chinese families use it as a secret natural healing drink. Kefir Power, promoted by Cory Quirino, was the first one to offer Kefir in the local market. Milk Kefir is also now available from The Kefir Culture in Arama, Serendra.

I got interested in Kefir because of Jeren's Kefirlicious Ice Cream. They joined the Ultimate Taste Test to introduce their commercially available Milk Kefir, which rated 3.4 out of 5.0. Some people who understand the health benefits of Kefir liked it. Some people did not like it because of its super sour taste --- more sour than yogurt. Some people think it is expensive but it is relatively priced lower than its competition.

The Best Fresh Milk and Yogurt in the Philippines?

Rizal Dairy Farms produces one of the best fresh milk products and fresh yogurts in the Philippines. Its greek yogurt has a cult following in the foodie circle. I love their plain yogurts with Mango or Strawberry because of the rich and creamy consistency. Best of all, they are locally produced in the Philippines! The only thing that comes close to it is the fresh milk produced in the Dairy Farms of Del Monte in Bukidnon.

Rizal Dairy Farms (located in the house of Jacqueline Haessig Alleje in Beverly Hills, Antipolo) will definitely be one of the stops in the Culinary Tour of Antipolo.

Bangga's Special Bagoong

We got a lot of raves about Bangga's special bagoong (shrimp paste). It garnered an Ultimate Taste Test (UTT) rating of 3.4 out of 5.0.

Even before the UTT Event, we were already enjoying Bangga's special bagoong. It is different because the first impression is that it is sweet. But it has a lingering salty taste at the back of your mouth and is highlighted by chili spikes in the end. You can actually eat the bagoong on its own and it is quite addicting. We find it a perfect companion to an extremely sour green mango. It can also make simple rice into something you can finish even without other ulam (dishes).

Our family is from Bicol and we did not find the laing anything special, and we like it with even more gata (coconut milk).
