Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady - The Musical (A Review)

Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady (The Musical)-3.jpg

Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady (KPANLL) is a proudly Original Filipino Musical about the aspirations and tribulations of the common Filipino, set amidst a battle between superheroes and supervillains. The show is very endearing throughout, flawlessly integrating Pinoy humor, poking fun at our quirky habits and (mis)pronunciation of words, and a hopeless love story.

I was in awe after the latest media preview at Onstage Greenbelt 1. It was my first time to watch the show, and we couldn't stop laughing and enjoyed it immensely.

I'm proud to be a witness of this coming of age of Philippine Theater and to watch history as it unfolds. Don't miss out on the show that everyone is raving about! Check out KPANLL - The Musical...

RAK of AEGIS: A Pinoy Rock Romantic Comedy Musical featuring the Songs of Aegis! (A Review) @PetaTheater

RAK of Aegis Show-16.jpg

RAK OF AEGIS is a Pinoy Original Musical based on the music of Pinoy Rock Band, Aegis. The music is weaved into a story of resilience amidst calamities and the dream of making it big someday.

It's a musical a la Mamma Mia, with a cheesy love story and the songs of Aegis as the soundtrack.

I love its visually stimulating production and the romantic comedy storyline. The first half of the musical was solid. It established the story of the different characters and their flooding dilemma with vibrant Aegis music.

The second half though was dramatic and a bit dragging. I think it could have ended better with a different conclusion.

But overall, this is one heart-warming musical with iconic Aegis songs that can be turned into a modern movie about the Pinoy's resilience and love for music against all odds.

This is a must-see for all theater lovers. You can be proud of how our original Pinoy theater productions are evolving in Manila. :)

You can still catch the last two weekend shows of Rak of Aegis, which closes on March 9!

Here's a photo essay when we watched the show with the boys...

WICKED Manila - Our Awesome Planet-35.jpg

WICKED The Musical finally opened last night at the CCP Main Theatre to kickoff Wicked Mania in Manila! It's the world-class Broadway musical that Filipinos have been raving about and campaigning to bring to the Philippines.

"Wicked" is the untold story of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. It's like a prequel to the story of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. It also shows the origins of the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion.

I love the show's "Green For Good" motto and why we shouldn't believe in hearsay and judge other people based purely on rumors.

After celebrating 10 years on Broadway last October 30, 2013, Wicked is finally in Manila!

Here's a photo essay of my WICKED experience...

RAMA HARI Ballet Musical: Must-Watch Pop Ballet Show!

First, a disclosure: this is the first ballet show I've watched.

We were in grade school when the first Rama Sita was staged by Ballet Philippines in 1980 with Basil Valdez as Rama, Kuh Ledesma as Sita, and Leo Valdez as the evil demon Ravana.

I've watched the adaptations of the Hindu epic Ramayana twice in Indonesia: first in the Pramayana Ramayana Ballet in Yogyakarta, and the Kecak Dance version in Uluwatu in Bali. I wonder how different Rama Hari would be.

I thought that Rama Hari is another one of those hyped up star-studded musicals but I was wrong.

We were literally blown away by the beautiful ballet dance choreography and the powerful tagalog musical score.

DRUM TAO: Why Watch the Art of Japanese Drums?

DrumTao There's a world-class show in town, and you shouldn't miss its limited run here in Manila!

DRUM TAO is a different kind of musical drum concert where the performers are trained in martial arts and prefer to practice outdoors in the forest to prepare for this awesome sensory experience.

It's like watching synchronized drumming--very animated and snappy with a bit of ouido (playing musical instruments by ear, in synchronization with the beat of the group).

The entire show is composed of musical drum stunt performances with passionate drum beating, chanting and shouting (there are no lyrics, just instrumental Japanese music). In between sets, there are comical skits showcasing Japanese humor.

ROCK OF AGES Manila: 8 Reasons Why You Should Watch the Live Musical First!

ROCK OF AGES castIsn't it great that Manila gets to see Rock of Ages two ways--on stage and in the cinema--at the same time? The Broadway musical (Manila production), led by Mig Ayesa, opens just as the Rock of Ages Movie, led by Tom Cruise, starts its run.

I was given the chance to watch the musical's preview night--and it was an awesome show! It had the longest dancing standing ovation I've seen for a preview night in Manila. The casting was solid and all the characters lived up to (and some even exceeded) our expectations.

It was great to see the debut of MiG Ayesa as Stacee Jaxx, the same role he performed in the touring Rock of Ages show in the US, and Vina Morales in her first theater role.

This is the perfect musical for the '80s generation.

Here are 8 Reasons Why You Should Watch Rock of Ages' Live Musical Production in Manila first:

Forbidden Broadway Manila Spoofs Spoiler

Forbidden Broadway-3.jpg

Forbidden Broadway is a parody of famous Broadway Musicals (think Live Bubble Gang Spoof Skits Concert) like Into the Woods, Les Mesirables, Cats, West Side Story, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Mamma Mia, to name a few.

It's a very timely show considering some of these Broadway musicals have been staged in Manila and most musical theater fans can relate to the popular spoofs.

If you hear someone laughing about a "lost in translation" scene, it is probably because they either want to let you know that they can relate to the spoof (since they know more about Musical Broadway than you do) or they just want to reveal their age. :)

Here's what we think about Forbidden Broadway in Manila...

Jekyll and Hyde Manila's Standing Ovation!

I don't get to see a lot of standing ovations in most of the shows in Manila. Usually, the Manila audience would give a standing ovation if Lea Salonga was in the cast, or if it's an international production like Mamma Mia.

Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo's new theatrical adaption of Jekyll and Hyde in Manila gets a standing ovation almost every performance because of the awesome solid cast.  I've watched most of the musicals this year, and this is so far the best production I've seen in terms of overall performance.

I almost missed watching this play. If you have not watched it, don't miss the final shows of Jekyll and Hyde in Manila this weekend!

Here's a glimpse of Jekyll and Hyde in Manila...
