FIGARO: Reinventing the Coffee Shop to a Filipino Café Concept?

oap 25

Figaro Coffee is a proudly Filipino coffee chain and is one of the most successful to grow on a global scale. Their vision has always been to support our farmers and promote high-quality, local coffee beans.

The coffee shop has been around since 1993 and is the brainchild of a group of coffee enthusiasts who dreamt of a café where they could entertain people while enjoying a great cup of coffee and delicious pastries. Its name comes from the male lead in the opera "The Barber of Seville" and encompasses the whole Italian and European concept they were going for.

Recently, Figaro decided to launch its new menu and Figaro Café store to cater to the evolving market while still staying passionately committed to boosting the local coffee industry.

Here's what to expect from the new and improved Figaro Coffee...

The ambiance of their new look is much more open and modern as opposed to the intimidating and classic European vibe.

They now have more homey and industrial elements to the store and a better acoustic ceiling design.

I love that despite growing their business over time, they still consistently source their freshly-roasted beans from all over the Philippines.

Figaro Coffee Menu: Salads and Sandwiches | Pasta and Pizza Breakfast and Lunch Sets | Combos and Basic Drinks | Specialty Drinks

The long tables are perfect for millennials and professionals who want to stay for coffee and food while collaborating and discussing ideas.

New Figaro Cafe-5.jpg

The new menu is a collaboration between Figaro's Chef Dexter Bellosillo, Chef Hanna Enore, and Mr. Justin Liu, their Executive Director. It is a mix of the old and new favorites with the portions good for one person.

New Figaro Cafe-20.jpg

Chicken Ceasar Salad (₱225)

Their take on the classic salad consists of crisp greens and grilled chicken, topped with bacon bits, candied walnuts, and parmesan cheese, finished with a creamy caesar dressing. I liked the generous serving of parmesan.

New Figaro Cafe-37.jpg

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich (₱280)

Pulled pork, special barbecue sauce, fresh greens, and coleslaw sandwiched inside fresh batard bread. The meat was tender and more on the sweet side. I personally prefer more savory sandwiches.

Five Cheese and Garlic Pizza (₱225)

My personal favorite is the Five Cheese and Garlic Pizza using a blend of mozzarella, parmesan, pizza cheese, cream cheese, and sharp cheddar.

The crust was light and crisp, and I liked that the garlic taste was just enough to cut through the cheese.

New Figaro Cafe-21.jpg

Quattro Formaggio Mac and Cheese (₱285)

The Quattro Formaggio Mac and Cheese is oven-baked with a special blend of mozzarella, parmesan, cream cheese, and pizza cheese.

The cheese sauce was creamy and heavy, with the bacon bits on top giving it texture and the right amount of crunch.

New Figaro Cafe-31.jpg

Pasta a la Carlo (₱235)

Al dente pasta served in light tomato basil sauce, capers, tuna chunks, and black olives.

This is Figaro's signature pasta and is a combination of sweet and spicy flavors.

New Figaro Cafe-36.jpg

Magandang Umaga Platter (₱275)

A breakfast medley of scrambled eggs, smoked ham, bacon, longganisa, potato wedges, and sliced batard baguette, with tomatoes and cucumber on the side.

They do make their own longganisa, which has a sweeter taste to it. The eggs were light and the potatoes crisp. This dish can be consumed by 2 people and will leave you full.

New Figaro Cafe-43.jpg

French Mushroom Omelette (₱225)

Eggs with shiitake mushroom and cheese, served with two slices of batard baguette and a side salad.

The omelette was generously filled and the eggs were light and fluffy.

New Figaro Cafe-40.jpg

Garlic Tuna Salpicao (₱249)

Tuna fillets sauteed in garlic served with tomato cucumber salsa and jasmine rice.

Their version of salpicao had a strong garlic taste, but the rice was a good complement to the flavors.

New Figaro Cafe-41.jpg

Adobo Flakes Kare-Kare (₱269)

Figaro's version of the classic dish. Adobo flakes served with java rice and thick kare-kare sauce.

The saltiness of the flakes was just enough to give the kare-kare its complementary flavor. You wouldn’t need bagoong for this.

New Figaro Cafe-45.jpg

Don't leave without trying one of their classic pastry dishes! I recommend their best-selling Vanilla Bread Pudding (₱70).

FINAL THOUGHTS

New Figaro Cafe-2.jpg

I love that they have shifted their brand and look towards a more inviting and homey venue where you can enjoy freshly cooked meals and a great cup of local coffee. I think everyone--including the younger generation--can now appreciate the new café dining experience Figaro Coffee has to offer.

I highly recommend the Five Cheese and Garlic Pizza for all the pizza lovers out there. You also have to try their Adobo Flakes Kare-Kare if you're a fan of the classic dish. The Quattro Formaggio Mac and Cheese was on the heavy side, but if you love comfort food, then this is what you should get! Budget P350/head for a meal and a drink.

Congratulations to Figaro Coffee! Check out FigaroCoffee.com for a Figaro Branch near you.
