If I had dollar for every time my friends would give me a weird look when I say "I don't like donuts", I'd probably be a millionaire by now (not really). Excuse the hyperbole, but donuts are probably the last thing I'd be craving. So when I was sent to do a taste test at Mister Donut, I had a gamut of mixed emotions—mostly curious.
Thankfully I like cake, and cake is the lesser of the two evils in Mister Donut's new Donut Cake Collection. I paid the newly refurbished branch at Trinoma a visit to see if I could be converted into a believer.
First things's first, I learned these Donut Cakes are unique due to the type of batter they're made with. Instead of the typical yeast-based batter used in the Bavarians, this one opts for a airy mixture that results with a soft, powdery bite.
Growing up, I had always associated Mister Donut with its small roadside stalls. In fact, I didn't even know they had physical stores until I went to Trinoma. Seeing my first physical store for the first time was surprising, as I never knew Mister Donut was actually the 2nd biggest donut franchise in the Philippines!
The shiny, clean, and minimalistic design is a classy upgrade from the tiny stalls that I always neglected at bus terminals.
Customers can select their own donuts freely at the counters. Large branches like the ones at Trinoma and Megamall uniquely have this self-service feature and gives you more options. Definitely worth a visit if you are a fan of the franchise.
Current crowd favorites of the Cake Collection are the Strawberry, Ube, and Mocha. I personally liked the Ube flavor the most because it's simply so nostalgic.
Selecting my own donuts by hand saved a lot of time and unnecessary chit-chat. Since I never go to donut shops, it felt nice to do my own self-teaching. Plus, I wanted to pretend I knew what I was doing!
After tasting the donuts, it probably took me the 2nd bite to realize I kind of liked them because they weren't cloyingly sweet. These Donut Cakes are melt-in-your-mouth crumbly, yet surprisingly moist. Though I didn't think of it at the time, they probably would have gone so well with a cup of coffee.
My only issues with the Cake Donuts are the fact that the flavors are too subtle and nothing in particular makes them stand out from one another. In fact, one can easily mistake these for same-flavored donuts with different colors. I know that Mister Donut is known for affordable treats, but I wish they didn't skimp out on better ingredients.
When customers were asked about the Donut Cake based on their taste, looks, and texture, the reviews were mixed. Some would say they liked it and others would call it average. A few customers noted the artificiality of the taste, while others found their general appearance unappetizing. However, it's really up to you to decide for yourself if these donuts are for you.
I, a person probably wouldn't eat a donut willingly, have found myself (slightly) converted into a donut-eater.
