COOKOUT: Embracing American Comfort Food Culture with Sausages, Burgers, and BBQ in Baguio!

Untitled

Given the long history of Filipinos with American Colonialists, it's no surprise that most locals have developed a taste for western food. COOKOUT is one such type of restaurant that embodies this--embracing the salt, grease, and fat of American comfort food that we’ve all, somehow, been programmed to enjoy.

Cookout started as a standalone grilling station along Baguio's Session Road among 3 friends--Russell Go, Melvin Perez, and JR de la Paz of Size Matters, another American comfort food joint in Pasig. The more their homemade sausages and burgers made stomachs happy, the more customers urged them to open a restaurant. Thus, Cookout by Size Matters was born as a collaboration between the 3 gentlemen. They essentially serve the very same sausages and patties as Size Matters, but with a menu unique only to Baguio.

Standing strong for about a year now, Team OAP went for a visit to see what they had to offer…

COOKOUT MENU: Sausages, Combinations, and Specials | Gourmet Burgers, Salads, and Pastas | Sides, Add-ons, Sauces, and Drinks

Cookout has a relatively modern venue at the newly renovated Albergo Hotel, with a modest lower ground and upper floor for eating. There aren't many seats, so this place is not suitable for large groups.

WHAT TO ORDER:

Untitled

Sausage Wrap (P249). Texas-style sausage, iceberg lettuce, charred corn and bell pepper, potato chips, homemade bread, chipotle ranch dressing.

The Sausage Wrap was born from a need to reinvigorate the typical sausage sandwich or roll. We found this bestseller comforting and a good pair for San Miguel Light (P50).

If we may suggest: more sausage in the sandwich next time?

Untitled

Tipsy Chips (P269). Beer-battered fish with breaded, deep-fried bacon, and fresh potato chips.

Given that locals love to drink alcohol during chilly weather, beer was added to the batter to give a different dimension to the deep-fried goodness.

We generally enjoyed these chips, but suggest holding a bit back on the salt for the fish.

Untitled

The Works Burger (P299). Monterey Jack stuffed beef patty, bacon, cheddar cheese, onion rings, onions, lettuce, tomato, garlic mushrooms, and oat bun.

In spite of this being an American Comfort Food joint, we were happy to hear that high-quality local meat is used to create their sausages and burger patties.

Try this to truly satisfy your carnivorous cravings.

Untitled

Southwestern BBQ Rubbed Pork Chop (P199/2pcs, P299/3pcs, P399/4pcs)

If you’re not in the mood for sausages or burgers, then this pork chop makes for a good candidate.

It's flavorful and juicy.

Wintermelon Juice (P80) | House Blend Iced Tea (P80 | Dalandan Juice (P80). The 32oz (P80) is the monster size. You may avail of the 22oz (P60) or the 12oz (P40).

The Team OAP favorite was the wintermelon juice. When bubble tea grew popular in the Philippines, Wintermelon became one of those must-buy flavors. This humble drink pays homage to those happy times.

Overall, Cookout is a nice place for a small group of friends to relax and enjoy some food. We loved the casual ambiance and general approachability of the establishment.

Congratulations, Russell Go, for making it on OAP’s official list of Foodie Destinations in Baguio! Cheers to more years of good food and company!
