SINGLE ORIGIN: All-Day Western Breakfast + Breakfast Cocktails + Lamill Coffee (First Look)

9/16/15 Updated: We finally tried the waffles & pancakes. Please see what we think below...

Single Origin Short Ribs

SINGLE ORIGIN is a one-stop neighborhood café in BGC, serving all-day Western breakfast, coffee, craft beers, and spirits by the Nikkei group. Its name is a tribute to Single Origin coffees.

I thought it was just a coffee and drinking place but I was surprised that it's actually family friendly and serves good meat dishes.

We tried Single Origin for dinner and here's what we think about it...

Single Origin-38.jpgSingle Origin has replaced the The Cake Club and offers brunch & dinner with a full range of drinks: coffee, tea, wine, beer, and cocktails. Pancakes and waffles are only served during the day.

I like the wooden industrial ambiance that is conducive even for families with kids.

Breakfast and Lunch Menu (7am - 6pm): Pancake or Waffles, Waffles, Beer Dough Pizza, Soups/ Salads, Sandwiches, Brunch Plates, Meats from Around, Pasta, Boards, Small Things

Dinner Menu (6PM to 12mn):  Soups/Salads, Sandwiches, Brunch Plates, Meats from Around, Beer Dough Pizza, Pasta, Boards, Small Things

Brunch Cocktails:
Classic Mimosa (P250). Freshly squeezed orange juice topped with sparkling wine.
Bacon Infused Bloody Mary (P290). House-infused bacon vodka, house-made Bloody Mary mix with tomato juice.

The idea behind the bacon-infused Bloody Mary is good but this drink is an acquired taste. You can stick to the classic Mimosa for a bubbly breakfast treat.

Single Origin-7.jpg
Prosciutto Salad (P320). Red lolo rosso and romaine lettuce, prosciutto, avocado, cherry tomato, dijon mustard dressing, shaved parmesan, poached egg.

The salad was just OK. The vegetables were a bit dry and the presentation was not appetizing.

Single Origin-9.jpg
Pumpkin and Cinnamon Soup (P120).

Aidan liked this thick soup with a bit of cinnamon.

Single Origin-12.jpg
White Truffle Pasta (P250). Linguine pasta, bacon, fresh mushroom, truffle oil. Served with garlic bread.

The pasta was just OK, too. The truffle oil flavor in ours evaporated when it was served.

Single Origin-11.jpg
Crab Fat Pasta (P260). Crab fat pasta and sautéed seafoods. Served with garlic bread.

The quality of the pasta is not as good as the options from the nearby places.

Single Origin-13.jpg
★ Surf and Turf Beer Dough Pizza (P320). Steak cutlets, shrimp, bleu cheese.

The pizza dough was good--thin, chewy, and good by itself. There's only a tiny portion of steak and shrimp per slice though.

Single Origin-10.jpg
Hong Kong Milk Tea (16oz Iced - P170). An Assam Sewper Estate tea stepped in milk and sugar. ★ Strawberry Basil Lemonade (P160). Freshly squeezed lemonade mixed with strawberry sauce, with a splash of soda and basil chiffon.

Our favorite is the strawberry basil lemonade, which is a similar drink from Nikkei. The milk tea was just OK.

Single Origin-15.jpg
★ Bleu Burger (P340). Bleu cheese stuffed wagyu patty, lettuce, caramelized onion, crumbled bleu cheese. Served with truffle fries.

The Kitayama wagyu patty infused with blue cheese was thick, juicy, and so good. The boys did not like the blue cheese though and the bread was a bit dry.

Single Origin-19.jpg
Shrimp Po Boy (P220). Deep fried shrimp tossed in honey mayo dressing on bread. Served with truffle potato chips.

They serve this with a generous serving of breaded shrimp. We enjoyed eating the shrimp itself.

Single Origin-18.jpg
Homemade Corned Beef Benedict (P240). Homemade corned beef, topped with poached duck eggs and hollandaise. Served with garlic parmesan potato hash.

The corned beef was tender and tasty. It was just a bit oily and thinly sliced.

Single Origin-22.jpg
★ Aussie (P350). Short ribs, baked beans, sunny side up egg, grilled bell pepper, and caramelized onion.

The short ribs were the best--super tender, flavored just right, and in a huge serving portion.

Single Origin-21.jpg
The boys were happy with the food! The wide, long wooden table is the most ideal for a family meal.

Single Origin-28.jpg
Hot Chocolate Cheesecake (P195). Dark chocolate cheesecake and candied birds eye chili.

This chocolate cheesecake flavor was bitin, but surprisingly addicting. The cheesecake was light and balanced with a bit of candied chili and the graham crust in the bottom. It can be improved.

(Note: The dessert options are very limited because they have sweet pancake and waffle options during the day.)

Single Origin-24.jpg
Hario V60 Pour Over 12oz (P140).

The owners are the exclusive distributors of Lamill Gourmet Coffee from the US.

Single Origin-32.jpg
★ Creme Brulee 8oz (P190)Espresso and caramel served with one part textured milk and one part foam, and creme brulée topping.

I like this sweet twist to my dessert coffee with a creme brulée topping.

Single Origin-33.jpg
Orange-Infused Cappuccino 8oz (P175). Orange-infused textured milk with espresso and dusted with cacao.

If you are looking for something different, try this coffee with a tangy orange contrast.

Single Origin-37.jpg
Congrats to Chef Jay Saycon, Carlo Lorenzana, and partners for the successful opening of your Single Origin concept!

Single Origin-39.jpg

Overall, we like the meat dishes--the Short Ribs, Homemade Corned Beef, and the Kitayama Bleu Cheese Burger.  The Chili Chocolate Cheesecake was good for dessert.

The Lamill coffee is really good and you can try the Creme Brulée or the Orange-Infused coffee. Order the Classic Mimosa, Bacon-Infused Bloody Mary, or the Strawberry Basil Lemonade for drinks.

They also have good craft beer options, spirits, and wines for those looking for a good place to wind down in BGC.

Budget about P500/head for food + drinks.

Check out Single Origin and let me know what your favorites are in the comments.

P.S. We will try the pancakes and waffles for breakfast next time since they are open as early as 7am.  Here's what we think of the pancakes and waffles...

Single Origin Breakfast-4.jpgBacon and Egg with Waffles (P250). 2 crispy thick waffles served with homemade bacon, your choice of 2 organic eggs and Vermont maple syrup.

The waffle is better than the pancakes and just make sure to order their homemade bacon or corned beef.

Single Origin Breakfast-3.jpg
Banana Macadamia (P250). Sliced bananas, whipped cream and Vermont maple syrup.

The waffle looks dry and not worth the calories.

Single Origin Breakfast-1.jpgThe coffee is the best to perk up your mornings!
