MOTORINO Authentic Napoletana Pizza in Manila (A Review) @Motorino

MOTORINO-15.jpg

MOTORINO is a Neapolitan-style pizzeria founded by Belgian Chef Mathieu Palombino in 2008 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It has branches in the East Village in New York City,  Soho, Wan Chai in Hong Kong, and now finally, in Manila.

Thank you to Trisha Santos and her partners from the Basil Group for bringing an authentic Napoletana Pizza in Manila.

We’ve already tried it a few times. Here’s what we think…

MOTORINO-3.jpg
Motorino Manila is located in Greenbelt 3 Makati, near the cinemas.

MOTORINO Takeout-2.jpg
The unique interiors are intriguing: tin ceiling, striped walls, and red lamps.

MOTORINO Takeout-4.jpg
It’s a good place to eat with your family or barkada before or after watching a movie.

MOTORINO Takeout-3.jpg
Most pizzerias in Naples have an altar dedicated to Mama Mary. The Manila branch pays tribute to Our Lady Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, which is an alleged Marian apparition in the Carmelite Monastery of Lipa, Batangas, Philippines, to a religious postulant, Teresita Castillo.

MOTORINO Takeout-5.jpgThe best seats are by the back of the restaurant, with the image of a mesmerizing bridge road.

MOTORINO-8.jpg
I wonder…what’s the story behind this road?

MOTORINO-5.jpg
I also like this corner table at the front, but many customers pass by this area.

MOTORINO-32.jpg
MOTORINO MENU:
Antipasti, The Perfect Pizza Wine, Lunch Prix Fixe, Pizze, Toppings, Soft Drinks, Wine, Dolci
Reds, Wines, Red Reserves, White Reserves, Beer, Whiskey, Cocktails, Espresso, Tea, Organic Tea

The pizzas are priced like the Pannizas in C’ Italian Dining (about P600-800/pizza), which is 2x more expensive than the Napoletana pizzas at Gino’s.

MOTORINO-11.jpg
The restaurant features an open kitchen where you can see how your pizza is prepared and cooked.

MOTORINO-14.jpg
The handmade dough is topped with simple but high quality ingredients, D.O.C. San Marzano tomatoes, Fiod di Latte mozzarella, and extra virgin olive oil.

MOTORINO-13.jpg
It is cooked for a few minutes in the super hot oven, designed specifically for this type of pizza.

MOTORINO-18.jpg
It is so hot that the center of the pizza is almost liquified. The crust also has a nice charred effect known as “leopard-spotting”.

MOTORINO-24.jpg
✮ Quattro Formaggio (P750). Fior di Latte, Pecorino, Gorgonzola, Provolone.

The pizza is sliced into 4 pieces. Each slice is meant to be folded for better enjoyment.

MOTORINO-28.jpg
The kids love the 4 cheese pizza because of the bubbling cheesy sauce in the middle and the chewy bread-like dough.

MOTORINO-30.jpg
✮ SOPPRESSATA PICCANTE (P695). Tomato Sauce, Fior di Latte, Spicy Soppressata, Fresh Chilies, Garlic Oregano, Pecorino, E.V. Olive Oil.

I liked this spicy pizza with fresh chilies and Soppressata, an Italian dry salami that is better than Pepperoni.

MOTORINO-39.jpg
The charred parts add a bit of bitterness and texture. The pizza is best eaten while it’s hot and dripping.
 MOTORINO-40.jpg
We asked for some extra olive oil and cheese to go with  the leftover charred crust.

MOTORINO-37.jpg
GRAGNANO The Perfect Pizza Wine (Glass – P195, Bottle – p895)Cantine Federiciane 2012 Campania, D.O.C., 30% Pedirosso, 30% Sciascinoso, 40% Aglianico, Plum Red, Medium, Semi-Sparkling.

They recommend pairing your pizza with the Gragnano (also known as the “Pizza Wine”) but it’s too sweet. It tastes like soda already.

Try the Nigroni cocktails instead.

MOTORINO Takeout-1.jpg
The have a take out counter if you want to bring some pizzas home. Hopefully they’ll have a delivery service soon, too. 🙂

MOTORINO Takeout-6.jpg
Brussels Sprout (P825)Fior di latte, Garlic, Pecorino, American Bacon, E.V. Olive Oil.

We ordered the Chef’s signature flavor at Motorino to go. It was just OK. The Brussels sprouts were a bit bitter and the bacon was fattier but not as flavorful.

MOTORINO-2.jpg

Thanks to MOTORINO, we finally have an authentic Napolentana Pizzeria in Manila. 🙂

I recommend the Soppressata Piccante and Quattro Formaggio. One pizza can be shared by two persons. It’s best to share different flavors with your family and friends. Budget at P700/head.

The toppings are very limited (no egg), they don’t have pastas, and it’s relatively more expensive than our favorite Gino’s Pizza

But if you’re a pizza lover, Motorino is still worth checking out.

  1. Had Motorino last week. So, so but they’re on their dry run. We had an impression that
they were rushing the pizzas, ergo the uber burnt crust. Maybe they will improve in time,
    hopefully.

  2. If this is authentic neapolitan pizza, then why do they slice the pizza?
aren’t you supposed to eat it the neapolitan/italian way by using fork and knife?
    ciao ciao

  3. Hi, Anton how are you? Nakakagutom naman niyan. Well, I like pizza that is simple and easy to bake. They are using wood for heating the brick oven that makes the pizza delicious. Actually, my sister-in-law and her family went to Italy for about a couple of weeks and she mentioned that the pizza are bigger than the pizza in Philippines and even here in California. They just used tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and olive oil. Most of the pizzas right now are overloaded with the toppings. Still, many people are preferred to the original pizza or Italian style pizza. Well, I will try to make this simple pizza at home.

  4. The pizza is not real neapolitan nad the prices are very high. The pizza is not made with mozzarella but with a cheap cheese. Also the names are wrong. You should write quattro formaggi, not quattro formaggio (just for an example).
