PAUL: Boulangerie, Patisserie, Restaurant, and Salon de Thé in Manila! (First Look)

PAUL BOULANGERIE - SM AURA - Our Awesome Planet-17.jpg

PAUL Boulangerie and Patisserie has been baking bread and pastries in France since 1889. Finally, after 124 years, they have opened a store in Manila this December 2013. Their bread is baked traditionally, hand-crafted using the best natural ingredients that are freshly flown in all the way from France.

The local franchise is owned by Ben Chan of the Bench empire. Paul Boulangerie's flagship store in SM Aura integrates the bakery, patisserie, restaurant, and tea salon in one.

Check out Paul when you are in SM Aura...

We love the bakery display at Paul's though deciding on what to try first can be overwhelming.

They also bake authentic French pastry breads on site.

✮ Pain au chocolat (P75 +10% service charge)Chocolate Croissant.

This is very good especially when baked fresh from the kitchen.

It's best to go in the mornings when everything is still fresh. Make sure to ask what's cooking in the oven. :)

Viennoise Chocolate (P140 +10% service charge). Sweet Bread with Chocolate Chips Drops.

Here's another variation, a sweet bread with Valhrona chocolate chips.

✮ Cramique Sugar and Raisin (P65 +10% service charge). Raisin and Sugar Brioche.

This is the favorite of my wife Rache because of the buttery brioche with sugar crystals and raisins.

✮ Beignet An Chocolat. Chocolate Baked Doughnut.

Pillowy donut with chocolate powder topping, and hazelnut chocolate inside. Yum!

Paul has a lovely Parisian café ambiance. I love the interiors...just don't look outside the windows.

The chairs are a bit formal but I still love the casual elegance of the whole setup.

Paul has an extensive menu that can meet your foodie needs anytime of the day.

Paul Boulangerie Menu:

✮ Croque-Madame (P420 +10% service charge). Farmer's ham, Emmental cheese, cream, pain de mie topped with a fried egg.

We tried their version of Croque madame which is two loaf breads topped with cheese with farmer's ham and sunny side up egg. Recommended for breakfast. :)

Piece de boeuf (P720 +10% service charge). Beef striploin served with salad, sauteed potatoe,s and shallots.

We tried the beef steak. The flavor is good but the meat they use has a lot of litid or ligaments.

But I like the generous serving of salad and potatoes. No need for additional sauces.

PAUL Boulangerie Patisserie Restaurant Salon de The - Our Awesome Planet-55.jpg
Salade saumon roti (P350 +10% service charge). Roasted salmon, mixed salad, tomatoes, French beans, eggs, and sesame.

We ordered salad and it was fresh and crispy. We realized too late that there was no need to order this since the main dishes already come with it.

✮ Le grand macaron (P250 +10% service charge). Almond macaron; choose from vanilla, pistachio, chocolate, raspberry, or chocolate.

For dessert, we love the big macaron!

PAUL Boulangerie Patisserie Restaurant Salon de The - Our Awesome Planet-60.jpg
It was crunchy on the outside and very chewy inside with just the right amount of almond cream in the middle. And you can taste the genuine pistachio flavor.

We love PAUL's French café ambiance and their authentic French breads and pastries. Make sure you try the croissants, macarons, and their version of croque-madame. Best to go in the mornings when most of the goodies are fresh from the oven.

It would have been lovely if they had a nicer view or were located somewhere with an alfresco setup, instead of the current commercialized view of SM Aura's main entrance.

Budget is P250-P500/head, depending on whether you go for merienda or  breakast/lunch/dinner. It's relatively a bit expensive.

i don't know about you, but P250 is still too much for a macaron...

Agree. P250 for a macaron? It's a total rip-off! And all prices of other items are highly unreasonable. Never will I step foot on this resto/bakery. Even a prince throwing so much excess money would find these prices unconscionable.

somehow, the hot dish offerings just destroys the specialty image of Paul.

the most unreasonably priced product they have are the Large Macarons. 250 pesos is like buying 5-6pcs worth of macarons(approx 2.5-3cm each). Plus why do they even bother importing them... if they are a really good patissier/boulanger then they should be able to do it here and lower down the price of it. Other than that i think they're other pastries are worth the price 75 bucks for a pain au chocolat i understand the value here and thinking of the ingredients used... it is quite bang for the buck! One thing i noticed though is that while almost all other international chains that we get here in Manila like say TWG or even the newely opened Ramen Nagi as an example they all have people of position who have been looking over their brand for a long time already, watch over the newly opened establishment to ensure that quality and standard is of the highest.

Anton, how do I minimize the links to your social media accounts on the left side of the screen? (Sorry, really not a techie). It's distracting and I can't see the words/pictures on that side at all.

I tried Paul when I was in Europe before and more than the macarons, I loved their eclairs. I tried the coffee eclair and I felt sad after I finished it 'cause I only bought 1 piece.

I saw that they have eclairs here and was only able to buy the chocolate one. It's as good as I remember :) It was worth every peso! I hope they also have coffee eclairs here. I'm definitely coming back. :)

lol@ P250 for a macaron? the menu looks good though cant wait to try.

I tried Paul's in London and their macaron are soo good :)

The large macaron in Paul in Paris costs around 4euros which converts to around Php240... not surprising that it is priced Php250 here...

This place looks delicious!

I tried the pistachio macaron, same taste as what I had in Paris though it's too much to eat for one person, so better share it. Next on my list is the chocolate tart, I'm saving it for next visit as that was my favorite. The salad serving is good for sharing for 2 -3 people.

I'm not sure if all the waiters in this Manila franchise are pushy, but ours was. He would insist on his "recommendations" and doesn't seem to listen. At first I wanted the eclair and then he recommended that I get the chocolate crepe instead (which in my opinion is very ordinary). My friend insisted on the strawberry tart and we asked him to serve it for later.

He served the crepe halfway through our meal, without being asked and then when we asked for the strawberry tart, he said it's no longer available. We reminded him that we placed the order early together with our mains and the crepe. He mumbled something and then he went on to recommend another type of strawberry pastry which we ended up getting (which was actually good). He might very well paid for our desserts since we ended up getting what he wanted us to eat.
