IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN Philippines’ Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen! @ikkoryuph

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-24.jpg
IKKORFYU FUKUOKA RAMEN is a Tonkotsu ramen from Yamagoya Ramen of Japan, which has been around since 1970, specializing in Chikuho noodles. Their original store in Manila is in the East Wing of Shangri-La Mall, and a bigger branch has opened in SM Aura.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen on Level 5 is one of the most popular restos in Shangri-La Plaza’s East Wing.

It gets full during peak lunch and dinner hours. They have a ramen bar counter if you want a quick ramen fix.

It has a nice and compact ambiance, with wooden panels decorated with Japanese characters surrounding the resto.

They specialize in Tonkotsu ramen, which uses pork broth simmered for hours.

Once the Tonkotsu is served, make sure to inhale the rich pork aroma before digging in. Best to immediately eat it while it’s hot!

★ AJITAMA TONKOTSU (P330 +10% service charge). Ikkoryu original hearty Tonkotsu ramen garnished with Chashu, green onion, bamboo shoots, wood ear and dried seaweed. Topped with a special half-boiled egg that is fully marinated with a special blended soy sauce base.

Order the basic Tonkotsu ramen with the chashu (pork slice) and the ajitama (special hard-boiled egg). Sometimes, we just like the basic taste with its very rich, pork-y flavor.

I recommend ordering the noodles hard, which is the al dente version to have that chewy, bouncy bite despite the thin noodles. The soft/normal variant does not really have texture, and it slides through. Order the very hard type to really enjoy the noodles.

Best to slurp it, which is a courteous way of enjoying the ramen in Japan.

★ BLACK GARLIC TONKOTSU (P380 +10% service charge)Tonkotsu soup mixed with special roast garlic oil.

For a more authentic Chikuho local way of eating, they say that you have to lightly add ground sesame seeds with red ginger pickles in the soup.

For us, we already love the strong, roasted garlic oil flavor of the Black Garlic Tonkotsu on its own. No wonder it’s one of the best sellers! If you adore garlic and enjoy strong flavors in your ramen, order this.

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-23.jpg
SPICY TOBANJAN TONKOTSU (P380 +10% service charge). Ramen with spicy Tobanjan paste, resulting in an absolutely appetizing and wholesome flavour.

Even though I ordered the spicy version, it was not as spicy as I expected — and not as enjoyable to eat as the Black Garlic Tonkotsu.

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-22.jpg
Karaage (P180 +10% service charge)Fried Chicken.

We ordered Karaage for the kids. It’s always a hit with them, thanks to the crispy skin and juicy meat.

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-19.jpg
Gyoza (6 pcs. – P150 +10% service charge)Dumplings.

The Gyoza was also good. It had a nicely toasted texture and juicy insides.

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-18.jpg
TAKANA YAKIMESHI (P180 +10% service charge)Takana Fried Rice.

We sometimes order rice to pair with the Karaage or to use for soaking up the soup in the last portions of the Tonkotsu. 🙂

IKKORYU FUKUOKA RAMEN-30.jpg
SAPPORO-PREMIUM BEER (Bottle) (125 +10% service charge).

For a more authentic feel, order a bottle of refreshing Japanese beer — the premium Sapporo. 🙂

For us, Ikkoryu has one of the best ramen noodles in town. Our personal favorites are the Black Garlic Tonkotsu ramen and the basic Ajitama Tonkotsu ramen. 🙂 We like the fact that you can specify the doneness of your noodles — soft, normal, hard and very hard.

We still can’t get enough of ramen, and it’s a good thing there are many restos to choose from. Perfect for the rainy season in Manila!

  1. For the past x months, we’ve gone through almost all the Ramen places in Manila. From Ukkokei, Mitsuyado, Wrong Ramen, Yushoken, Santouka, Kenjitei, Shinjuku, Tamagoya, Ikkoryu and Genya Menki, and we ordered all their siupposed bestsellers. By far, the tastiest Ramen we’ve had is in Genya Menki in Macapagal Ave in Pasay City. Hands down!!!! And if you compare its price to the rest of these places, you’ve got Genya leading the pack by a far mile. I would gladly pay them more for such ramen! Down the ladder is Shinjuku, Tamagoya and Wrong Ramen.

  2. I was there today and was quite disappointed. I ordered the Black Garlic, but tasted 3 more other varieties which the rest of my family ordered. I find that the soup is too salty. Although they had a choice on how you want your noodles done, the fact that the noodles are thin, it won’t really matter if you ordered the soft, normal or hard. You wouldn’t notice it since they’re thin. The chashu was not tasty enough, and tasted as if they were just boiled.

  3. I’m surprised you said Ikkoryu has one of the best ramen noodles in town. To summarize our experience in their SM Aura branch recently, the soup tasted malansa & noodles are mushy. We ordered their best seller and another variant with the Kimchi. We didn’t get to finish it. Not to mention their overpriced Teriyaki Wings (Php180) which were literally 6 tiny parts like 1/3 of a whole chicken wing. Gyoza and the karaage was Ok but not enough to save our very disappointing experience. What a waste of money.

  4. I am not aware of the parameters for a good ramen so I can say that the ramen was okay. What turned us off was seeing how the rockwell branch staff handled an irate customer. We were there yesterday and as observed, the manager did not have the humility and professionalism to apologize. Instead, they let the customer rant so loud that we the other diners were disturbed. As overheard, the customer had issues with service but we saw the crew members just smile short of laugh at the customer. I would have exploded if I were that customer.

  5. This is the worst ramen that ive ever tasted! Customer service is so bad (Century City Mall). Waiters should be brief regarding the menus. Super bad experience and will not eat here ever again!
