YOMENYA GOEMON: Pasta & Pizza the Japanese Way?

Yomenya Goemon-17.jpg

YOMENYA GOEMON is a Japanese Spaghetti House which is an Asian-flavored-reinvented Italian Pizza & Pasta place. It first started in Koen Street in Shibuya in 1976 for the ramen-loving Japanese and grew to 2,500 stores to become the 2nd largest food & beverage player in Japan. It is named after the Japanese Robin-Hood figure Goemon.

The Japanese Spaghetti concept was first introduced by HAPADOG with  Shifudo Pasta here in Manila. Yomenya Goemon took it to a whole new level and really hit the Filipinos’ love for pasta as comfort food and craving for more Japanese flavors.

Here’s what we think about Yomenya Goemon…

The resto is designed as a fast-food place with maximized seating capacity and very narrow aisles.

The menu is centered around Spaghetti and Soup Spaghetti ,which is similar to their ramen version.

You can opt to add salad, pizza and dessert.

Chicken & Mushroom with Porcini (P360 +10% service charge+ Dessert Set (+250 +10% service charge) which includes soup, salad, dessert & soda drink or iced tea (single serve)

The Chicken and Mushroom soup is a typical carbonara sauce with a lighter consistency so that you can slurp it 🙂 I like the al dente pasta and carefully- selected mushroom and chicken pieces.

(Tip: You can add P180 to make any large spaghetti into a set with soup, salad and iced tea. We preferred to add P250 to get the dessert set instead because you’ll get a better deal for the regular-sized dessert.)

It’s a bit messy with chopsticks or even with fork because of the sauce, but it adds up to the appeal of eating this Japanese type of Spaghetti.

★ Mediterranean Tomato Cream Soup Spaghetti with Fresh Seafood (P310 +10% service charge).

I like the tomato-based soup more than the cream-based one. I will recommend the Mediterranean version of this soup spaghetti with fresh seafood that was good with juicy scallops, a bit chewy squid, and tasty clams and mussels as well.

The serving sizes were really big, so it is best if you share it. The first bites of this soup spaghetti were full of umami moments but after some time nakakasuya.

Smoked Chicken with Four Cheese (P350 +10% service charge).

The 10-inch pizza came in with thick crust and less ingredients. This was not worth the calories, so better just order the spaghetti. Even the kids did not like it.

★ Mentaiko (Spicy Cod Roe) Shrimp & Japanese Herb Ao-Shiso (P395 +10% service charge).

This was the best spaghetti for us because of the unique tastes of the  Mentaiko spicy cod eggs that pop full of flavor. The shrimp and Japanese seaweed added to the exotic flavor of this dish. I would go back just for the Mentaiko spaghetti 🙂

Souffle Cheese Cake (P160 +10% service charge) with Strawberry Ice Cream

The cheese cake was a bit too rich with too much carbo-loading for one meal. We ended up eating the ice cream only. Skip the dessert here.

Overall, it’s a special carbo-loading affair and the better to eat here in groups so that you can share your spaghetti. I love the fact that they let you wait for a while as your ordered dish is cooked. When the dish arrives, the table is like a mini battleground for the spaghetti complete with “flying” chopsticks and enjoyable slurping sounds.

This is a perfect place to eat before watching a movie. I would recommend ordering the Mentaiko Spaghetti with the salad. Budget P500/head.

  1. This restaurant was a big disappointment. The prices are reasonable and the menu looks very appetizing. The food is mediocre. I had their squid ink pasta as the staff recommended this to be one of their specialties. All you get are 5 tiny squid rings and a slightly squid ink coating on your pasta devoid of flavor. If you are looking for authentic flavor, therefore this is not the place for you. Their tomato sauce in the pasta tastes almost straight from the can. Considering their over staff in the kitchen, they should come up with something more impressive.

  2. “The Japanese Spaghetti concept was first introduced by HAPADOG with Shifudo Pasta here in Manila.”
I agree with xkidz’s observation. My family and I have been enjoying UCC’s Japanese spaghetti dishes for years. I don’t think it’s fair to credit Hapadog for introducing the concept in Manila. I think Tokyo Cafe (originally Kohikan) might have even come before Hapadog.

  3. Also, you might want to look up the definition of “exasperating”. It definitely does not mean the same thing as “nakakasuya”.

  4. nothing special
the dishes on display in the window show a lot more topping than what you get
also upsizing only increases the amount of paste but not the toppings…
you may like italianis better or marcianos or some other place that serves pasta…

  5. Oh, I love Japanese-style pasta! I wish we had somewhere that serves it around here. I try to cook some of the dishes myself, but I don’t always have the right ingredients. Thank you for sharing!

  6. Whether Hapadog served it first or not, the spaghetti soup they served is the best I have ever tasted. Try their Hokkaido spaghetti soup.
