BHS Central: A Foodie's Guide to the BEST Eats at Bonifacio High Street Central :)

Sutra Christmas-21.jpg

BHS Central is the culinary hub of the next generation of restaurants in Metro Manila.

Here is a foodie's guide on where to eat in Bonifacio High Street Central.  It's worth to try all of them :)

LOOKING FOR A FEEL GOOD RESTO?

1. Stella and Rocketroom

Stella & Rocketroom-44.jpg

STELLA is a wood fire bistro that offers light and fresh cuisine, specializing in wood fire oven-cooked dishes. A brainchild from the creators of Museum Cafe, it is also a sister resto of Chelsea -- not a rehashed concept, but something totally new and exciting.

It is envisioned to be the Star restaurant among all the Bonifacio High Street Central establishments. It offers the best value for money (relatively affordable) with its unique and high quality dishes.

We pre-celebrated Mother's Day in Stella, and here is what we liked and didn't like about it...

2. Slice

Slice-14-1.jpg

One of the new concept restaurants in Bonifacio High Street Central is SLICE, the latest baby of Senator Pia Cayetano. If Sonja's Cupcake bakery ambiance and Cafe Mary Grace's homey feel-good food had an offspring with a focus on healthy and natural products, this would be it. :)

Aidan wanted to eat late at night to try a new restaurant, so we decided to try SLICE, which was on soft-opening, for our all-boys night out...

4. Geisha

Geisha-14.jpg

At first, we found the concept of Geisha a bit strange -- an Indian-owned Japanese restaurant, patronized mostly by Filipinos and Indians, that is known for its vegetarian dishes.

It's the higher-end version of Red Kimono, with an elegant ambiance but relatively affordable menu.

FOR PIZZA LOVERS:

5. Aria

Aria Cucina Italiana in Manila!

ARIA was the talk of the town when it first opened in D'Mall Boracay in 2003. Foodies raved about its homemade pasta and wood-fire oven pizzas (see: Top5 Bora Restos!, and What's New in Boracay in 2010?). After 9 years, it finally opened its doors in Manila. :)

We're curious to know if it would create the same buzz among foodies amidst really good Italian restaurants in the metro. Cyma Boracay's expansion to Manila was very successful, setting up shop in various malls.

As for Aria, it decided to expand to a super high-end mall with relatively higher prices--will it click? Will we see Aria Mania in Manila?

6. Nolita (North of Little Italy)

Nolita-9.jpg

NOLITA is a New-York inspired resto in BGC Central by Chef Cuit Kaufman. Big, authentic, New-York style pizzas and American comfort food are found on its menu. It is a follow-up to their successful Borough resto in Podium.

This is actually our third time at the resto ever since it opened early this year, and we've enjoyed every visit. Ian of Sebastian's Ice Cream was raving about Nolita's Steak and Eggs pizza, declaring that it's as close to authentic New York-style pizza as you can get in Manila.

It's a good place to grab something quick and just hang out with friends in a laid-back, come-as-you-are ambiance. Check out what to expect in Nolita...

For Carnivores:

7. 'CUE, Modern Barbecue

Cue' Modern Barbecue-22.jpg

The concept of a modern barbecue house created by first-time restaurateurs intrigued me. I initially thought it was a churrascaria, but it was more of a customizable barbecue experience.

At 'Cue, you can choose your own meat and specify how you want it: wet or dry rubbed, slow-baked or dark ale-braised. Then, you can choose from the different house-made sauces, sides, and toppings.

This is a unique addition to the culinary hub of Bonifacio High Street Central restos...

8. Village Tavern

Village Tavern-17.jpg

Village Tavern is a high-end American Restaurant Chain from the group that brought Friday's and Italianni's to Manila. Although it was established way back in 1984 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, most Filipinos are not familiar with this brand.

We were curious and tried it out...

9. SutrA

Sutra Christmas-39.jpg

SutrA Restaurant and Bar is the first restaurant (but the second establishment after Jamba Juice) that opened in Bonifacio High Street Central.

BHS Central promises to provide higher-end dining experiences from flagship restaurants of restaurant chains or signature resto concepts from known chefs.

This is the 4th restaurant concept from the Nand and Kevin Prasad tandem, which includes Duo Steakhouse and Wine BarZuni and Asya Filipino Asian Restaurant.

SutrA promises an exotic experience "that excites the 5 senses throughout your dining experience".

We decided to hold the Christmas Dinner of our family in SutrA to get a first-hand experience of the BHS Central promise...

SOMETHING SPANISH?

10. Beso Cucina Vinoteka

Beso Cucina Vinoteka-21.jpg

There are times when we want a breather from the boys and go on a date on our own. During these rare occasions, we would go to adults-only places that serve good food.

Chef Carlo's Beso Cucina Vinoteka is one of those places that serve good Spanish tapas with a good selection of alcoholic drinks, located in Bonifacio High Street Central.

Although, one of the disadvantages of eating on a date is that you can only order food good for two, and you have to be very selective.

We enjoyed our Beso date experience. It's a good place to hang out for good food and drinks with your special someone. :)

CRAVING FOR ASIAN FOOD?

11. Elias

ELIAS-6.jpg

Elias is one of the high-end Filipino restaurants in Bonifacio High Street Central. It is an upscale version of Crisostomo by Florabel Co Yatco. It basically has the same "Turn of the Century Filipino Dining Concept" but has an expanded menu to include pizza and other dishes.

This was the setting for one of the mini-reunions of my wife's ICA batch called Spirants. I'm starting to get to know her high school batchmates, including Florabel, the owner of the restaurant.

12. Sariwon

Sariwon, Korean Barbecue-71.jpg

The Korean craze in Manila just got even more interesting with the opening of the first branch outside Korea of the legendary Bulgogi of Mrs. Bun-Im Koo (from the Sariwon town in North Korea).

Most Filipinos are not familiar with the brand except for the Korean community that immediately patronized the restaurant. Filipinos tend to go for the Bulgogi and Galbi, while the Koreans enjoy the cold noodles.

Sariwon's Bulgogi and Galbi are better than those from Bulgogi Brothers, and I love that they use a smokeless roaster so you don't smell like Bulgogi after eating.

Here are some notes, tips and recommendations if you plan to try it out...

13. Mango Tree

Mango Tree-1.jpg

How times have changed!

Hotels no longer monopolize the fine dining scene in Manila. Most actually have neglected it--they hardly innovate or even renovate their restaurants. They just rely on introducing different-themed buffets with different chefs. These days, if you want to go out for really good food, you go to specialized themed restaurants.

And now, we have Mango Tree to thank for bringing Authentic Thai Fine Dining to Manila!

Since Mango Tree is a Thailand Restaurant Chain, you can expect authentic Thai food and not the toned-down, Filipino-Thai sweet version. (I was never a fan of the Mango Tree Bistros here in Manila because the food was a bit safe and lacked in taste.)

We love the Mango Tree Flagship Store in Bonifacio High Street Central for its authentic Thai dishes, high-ceiling interiors, and Thai-inspired ambiance.

Check out our Mango Tree Dining experience with my Mastermind team...

SWEET ENDINGS:

14. The Cake Club

The Cake Club-7.jpg

Most of the restaurants in Bonifacio High Street Central seem to have neglected including really good desserts in the menu, so it's best to go to a place that specializes in desserts like The Cake Club by Diamond Hotel. This is their second outlet after the Rockwell Mall.

Here are our recommendations for an awesome dessert experience in The Cake Club...

Hi Anton!

Thanks for posting this... My family and I have been frequenting the BGC area because we are looking at some properties to invest in. Have tried some of the mentioned here but we failed to try Elias about 2 weeks ago (my birthday actually) because they couldn't sit us because we were only 3. In spite of the fact that the restaurant was not even half filled. Was really excited pa naman to eat at Elias since we like Crisostomo also. Anyways, will be bringing some more people next time we are in the area.

Thats weird Ingrid, Chef Florabel should fix this unusual policy...

Hmmm...why is Nanbantei not on this list?

That's what I thought so too Anton. We were there during the Nokia Lumia event and we asked if could sit inside since it was about to rain (which it did). The girl at the door said that we CAN sit naman inside but we HAVE TO share a table with other customers.... My husband took offense since no one was there din naman while we waited to be seated. We would understand if the place was packed, but since it wasn't we decided to eat somewhere else. Nakakaturn off kasi, parang they discourage small intimate gatherings there. :(

Hi Anton,

I just would like to ask on how do you take photo of the food? Minsan parang nakaka-shy mag-take ng photo especially when you are in a fine dining resto. :)

I really like your reviews! We will definitely try Mango Tree because we really love thai cuisine.

More power!

awesome list sir. we've been visiting this place quite some time now but haven't tried any of the restos yet. We'll definitely try Nolita.

I just take photos as discretely as possible.

Anton

Jamba Juice!!!! cant wait to try this out.... hear they are very popular abroad..

thank you for this post. i don't frequent the BGC area that often when i visit manila, but i will now, armed with this useful list.

Oh my JAmba Juice!, Aligue Rice!, White Cheeze pizza!. I miss high street! I wont be back for a long time. Butuan City has nothing like those.

All the foods that you post are are all enticing and i am craving for it..i should try it one by one.. :)
