The BEST New Year's Eve Parties in Manila to Welcome 2012!

12/30/15 Update: New Year's Eve Manila 2016: Awesome Guide to a Dazzling New Year!

Fireworks at Eastwood

The Eastwood Mall Quezon City Countdown is picking up steam as one of the most anticipated countdowns on New Year's eve. It is Manila's answer to New York's Times Square Countdown -- with the best bands, the coolest fireworks and, this year, the Star Drop at 12mn.

The countdown will be led by Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano, with his sons Paolo and Gab Valenciano, and the Adlibb dancers. Witness the stellar performances of local artists like Billy Crawford, The Dawn, Amber Davis, Urbanation, and Philippine All Stars.

The program is for free at the Eastwood Mall Open Park, 6pm onwards.

Sendong Charity Efforts:
Eastwood Mall has a drop box at the concierge for donations. The Eastwood Foundation and the Holy Family Chapel are donating 1 Million Pesos to the Sendong Rehabilitation efforts.

"Into the Green Zone" Photography by George Tapan.

Congratulations to George Tapan for winning the 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 - Places Category

This is a significant win for the Philippines because:

1. The National Geographic Photo Contest is the most prestigious annual International Photo Contest capturing the beauty of the world through captivating imagery.

2. There were 20,000 photographs submitted by the best photographers in 130 countries for three categories: people, places, and nature. There is a winner in each category and an overall winner among the three category winners. George Tapan is the winner for places category.

3. This contest is not based on popularity votes (via facebook likes). The winning photos were judged by respected National Geographic magazine photographers Tim Laman, Amy Toensing, and Peter Essick based on creativity and photographic quality (without the use of photoshop).

4. This is the first time that Philippines won in this prestigious contest. This is also the first time that George Tapan joined this contest and won :)

5. The winning entry showcases the real beauty of the Philippines through the beauty of our beaches in Palawan!

Romi Garduce's Seventh Summit Quest: Vinson Massif, Antarctica

PITO para sa PILIPINO-2.jpg

I've been supporting and blogging about Romi Garduce's quest to conquer the seven summits ever since OAP started. (See: 21 posts categorized "Filipino Seven Summiter")

He is a former IT colleague from Procter & Gamble Philippines. I can still remember my first-ever fun climb to the summit of Mt. Maculot in Batangas, which he initiated. He's always loved the mountains and  "kinikilig" when he is on top of the summit.

He became popular when he and his two other Filipino companions successfully reached the top of Mt. Everest in May 2006. He personally inspired me when he shared with us an experiential account and inspirational talk about his successful climb up Everest. (see: Romi's Everest and My One Big Dream. What's your Everest?)

In the office, Romi is known as a happy-go-lucky person, but when it comes to mountain climbing or diving, he is the take-charge guy, the person you want to be with because you know you'll be safe with him.

This Christmas 2011/New Year 2012, he is finally completing his 10-year quest to be the First Filipino to ever reach the seven highest summits in the seven continents!

Here is a photo timeline of Romi's "Seven Summits" Quest:

My Kitchen by Chef Chris Locher

My Kitchen by Chef Chris-34.jpg

Chef Chris Locher, the man behind the popular C' Italian Dining in Angeles, Pampanga, has finally opened a restaurant in Manila! A lot of foodies are quite excited about this latest development.

It is named My Kitchen by Chef Chris, and it replaces the Barramundi Restaurant of The Oasis Hotel in Paco Park. Yes, you have to brave the traffic of Manila to get there (but it is still nearer than driving all the way to Clark Field in Angeles).

Here is a first look at My Kitchen by Chef Chris...

Manila's Artisanal Ice Cream scene is very exciting. Filipinos are not settling anymore for the commercialized, not-so-yummy, imported brands. This holiday season, we encourage you to support the Filipino Ice Cream Artisan who makes the most delicious ice cream in Manila -- guaranteed!

Here is a guide to the BEST of Filipino Artisanal Ice Creams in Manila (Anton's List):

They offer one of the smoothest and creamiest ice cream we've ever tasted. They are the only artisanal ice cream company that also produces their own milk (Holly's Milk), so they only get the best base ingredient for their ice cream.

Our favorite flavors are Malted Milk and Salted Caramel.
