[Flavors of La Salle] Solomon's Guest House

One of Malate's secret places is called Solomon's Guest House. It is the practicum restaurant of De La Salle - College of St. Benilde School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. Only the creme dela creme of the batch are allowed to operate and run the restaurant for a particular term. Since it opened in May 2003 to the public, they now have 14 batches of students serving the Solomon Guest House. Batch-14's theme is Mediterranean Cuisine and Solomon's House Classics.
It is named after a De La Salle brother - Br. Solomon Nicholas Leclerq who was martyred during the French Revolution on September 2, 1792 and the first to be beatified among the La Sallian brothers on October 17, 1926. The Solomon Guest House is hidden along one of the side streets from the corner of De La Salle - College of St. Benilde Angelo King Building.
What we love about Solomon house is that you can eat their Parm Crusted Fish classic complete with presentation and ambiance for less than P100. Also, their paninis are sold for P65 only. The service is very good and the students are very professional. We love to bring our guests here. However, the Solomon House fails in comparison with all the other practicum restaurants that I have been to. That is sad because CSB's culinary arts has the highest tuition and they are on trimestral basis.

The actual house is small so they decided to have al fresco dining with umbrellas and tents because more and more people are going back to Solomon's Guest House.
We had a lunch meeting with Chef Garbs' CEO Lex Adasa and wife. This place is popular for meetings so you better reserve ahead of time.
Solomon Guest House Batch 14 Menu 1 | Menu 2.
Solomon Special Panini (P65). Only 65 bucks for this yummy treat! I'm going back to Solomon house just for this.

Chicken Pesto Linguini (P75).The pastas should be cooked al dente style and not let it be drowned in its sauce. Oh well, for P75 this is way better than a Jollibee meal.
Parm Crusted Fish (P95). Pan-fried fish served with pesto pasta and side salad. They got the fish right and no wonder this is the best seller in the house. This is perfect for the lenten season if you happen to be in Malate area near La Salle.
Choco-Lava Cake (P60). Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and strawberry sauce.
The desserts are a waste of calories but I must admit this is already the best within the De La Salle area.

The Solomon Crepe (P60). Peach and blueberry crepe topped with heavy cream and chocolate.

I am currently enrolled in DLS-CSB studying HRIM. We are one of the first schools to have HRIM and we are the top school. Solomon's Guest House has been up and about for several years now. I know that the place looks a bit out dated compared to Enderun's place. However, there are big plans for Solomon including replacing the old furnitures. However, I am glad that you liked your stay and that you'll come back :)

Hi Mr. Anton, i really dont know you infact i am not familiar with your family name, likewise, this is actually the very first time that i heard or viewed your blog site. i am a student at De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, I just find it so unfair that you and your wife stated such abrasive comments about the establishment.
I would just like to compare and contrast the statements that you and your wife made. These are some of the comments that i want to highlight:
Our Awesome Planet blog site:
"The service is very good and the students are very professional. We love to bring our guests here."
Mrs Awesome planet blog site:
"Servers here are the CSB students who are on their practicum year taking up Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management so do not expect them to be professional servers. They would naturally be nervous and still polishing their serving skills. So please expand your patience with them."
very contradicting right...
next
Our awesome planet blog site:
"Only 65 bucks for this yummy treat!(pertaining to the panini) I'm going back to Solomon house just for this."
Mrs. Awesome planet blog site:
"Nothing great (pertaining to the panini). Still love the Cibo’s paninis"
very contradicting...
next
Our awesome planet blog site:
"The desserts are a waste of calories but I must admit this is already the best within the De La Salle area."
Mrs. awesome planet blog site:
"Peach and blueberry crepe topped with heavy cream and chocolate. Forget about their desserts!"
"Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and strawberry sauce. Shouldn’t have ordered this too!"
very contradicting...
last
Our awesome planet blog site:
"However, the Solomon House fails in comparison with all the other practicum restaurants that I have been to. That is sad because CSB's culinary arts has the highest tuition and they are on trimestral basis."
Mrs. Awesome planet blog site:
"Food served here are quite simple compared to what Endurun and International School for Culinary Arts & Hotel Management (ISCAHM) is operating."
corresponding... finally...
First, dont compare Solomon Guest House's menu to other culinary schools' menu because obviously the prices are very different, SGH's is ranging from Php 60 to Php 95 while others are ranging from Php 200 to Php 600, it's not the same banana.
Second, please be cautious of the negative things that you are uttering, especially if you will post it on the net because obviously it will be seen by people and you cannot just post such unpleasant comments and expect us to be silent about it. Having a blog site does not give you the power to damage other people's lives or the establishment's established name, please consider the value of social responsibility, we at DLS - CSB know this because it is part of our Benildean core values.
Lastly, if your comments are good then post it, on the contrary, if you think that they might destroy other establishments' reputation or people might get offended then just keep it to yourselves.. thank you

Hi. I would just like to comment on Byron's statement.
First, I'm an alumni of La Salle and I believe Anton is too. The way I see and read it, there's nothing wrong with the way they wrote about the establishment (Remember Anton and Rache sometimes doesn't share the same sentiments on things they experience, thus the contradiction). They are also not professional food critics so it won't bear a lot, so don't worry.
If I were you, I'll be professional about it, I'll take this as an opportunity to take some positive reaction and ask the authors what specifically they don't like, what areas need to improve and if they have any suggestions so that next time they "revisit" the said establishment, they might give a positive response.
Posted by: allan | Friday, March 14, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Hi Byron,
Thanks for the feedback and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I know that enderun and iscahm are high-end. But I'll be posting about MIHCA who trains cook not chefs and their practicum restaurant is way better than Solomon House in terms of ambiance, quality of food, and service. But I think Solomon House can be a lot better than where it is right now.
Anton

Hi Allan,
thank you for the affirmation:
"They are also not professional food critics so it won't bear a lot, so don't worry."
and now that i "revisited" this blog site, i would like to give you a positive response.. :-)
Mr Anton,
I am so glad to hear that MIHCA were able to train cooks for they are saving our beloved country from the dilemma of having high unemployment rate, kudos to MIHCA!
"their practicum restaurant is way better than Solomon House in terms of ambiance, quality of food, and service. But I think Solomon House can be a lot better than where it is right now."
i was really amazed by this statement, i did not know that besides being a not so professional food critic(according to allan), you are also an interior designer and an F and B manager. You are a very talented person, I strongly believe that you will be a lot better than where you are right now. and by the way its byron not bryon. =)
Posted by: Byron Francisco | Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 12:47 AM
i totally agree on byron francisco's statements, i am not affiliated with any of the culinary schools here in the philippines. I actually read everything and i think that the comments made by anton and his wife were below the belt, it is really unfair to compare them in the first place knowing that those schools are rivals...
Posted by: sophia | Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 01:11 AM
i disagree on mr anton's comment regarding the solomon guest house.
I am an HR manager of one of the pioneer chain hotels in the philippines, this establishment serves as a cocoon for future brilliant chefs of our country, infact most of our on the job trainees are member of the solomon guest house and they really stand out among the other trainees, we really prefer practicumers from solomon guest house.
Posted by: Miguel | Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 01:24 AM
Miguel -- glad to hear that the Solomon House graduates are preferred in the pioneer chain hotels in the Philippines :)
Sophia -- Thanks for the comments! My intent is not to compare the curriculum / quality of graduates of the school. The intent is to compare the experience in the different practicum restaurants from an ordinary person's point of view.
Byron -- sorry for misspelling your name. I corrected that already. I would agree that we are just ordinary people who loves to eat. I also welcome and take feedback so that we can improve without being defensive.
Solomon House is the top and pioneer practicum restaurant in the country. It should be beating all the other practicum restaurants in the country even Enderun, Aubergine, and MIHCA in terms of the overall experience it offers to its guest. The other practicum restaurants are just babies compared to Solomon but they had an advantage in terms of creating a modern sophisticated experience. It is actually very simple and I already have some marketing ideas on how Solomon House can beat the rest. I heard that there are big plans to upgrade Solomon House, so that would be great.

Mr. Anton --- thank you for correcting my misspelled name, it is very evident that you welcome and take feedbacks to improve yourself without being defensive, but you failed to welcome and take feedbacks with comprehension.

I am not contradicting myself, just stating a fact... =)
"who does'nt need improvements & feedbacks?...I DO lol!"
... and you're so right, who doesn't need improvement and feedback? everyone! especially you!
"who does'nt need improvements & feedbacks?...I DO lol!"
corrections:
apostrophe after "N" in doesn't
omit "S" in "improvements" and "feedbacks"
"of course by using books by attending symposiums seminars by experimentations as part of his 'romms for improvements' "
correction:
"rooms" for improvement
"mistakes that he uses as 'feedbacks' to perfected his now KNOWN perfections"
correction:
omit "ed" in "perfected"
"so now we know o understands that words like rooms for improvements or feedbacks are not necessarily 'bad words' "
corrections:
omit "S" in "understands"
"rooms for improvement" is not a word
"...the low prices in this restaurant compare to others mentioned 'suggested'....that this management are considerate without a doubt....coz a lot of eating places if they are or if they know they're that good o great as they claim to be....means entitlement for higher prices.....lol....just humuring all you...."
corrections:
"compared" instead of "compare"
omit ellipses between "suggested" and "that"
this management "IS" considerate
"humuring" hahahahah very very funny. rotfl!
"as to why on anything mean"
HUH???
feedback for your personal improvement:
1) pick a tense and stick to it, you're not shuttling back and forth through time while writing a single paragraph, are you?!
2) grammar check, please (punctuation marks, spelling, subject-verb agreement etc.)
3) Einstein schmeinstein. take it from Robert Hartwell Fiske:
"Since how a person speaks and writes is a fair reflection of how a person thinks and feels, shoddy language may imply a careless and inconsiderate people-- a public whose ideals have been discarded and whose ideas have been distorted. And in a society of this sort, easiness and mediocrity are much esteemed."
...lol...lol..lol.. =)

Yun naman pala e! So, don't take the comments seriously. What's the point of putting a 'fight' kung alam niyo naman na ang comments na ibinigay nila Anton ay ang overall experience (price, place, ambiance, compared to 'others', etc.) and not just the quality of food and service itself! The mere fact that he stated that "the Solomon House fails in comparison with all the other practicum restaurants that I have been to." means degrading the establishment and indirectly saying that SGH is inferior in terms of quality of food and service. Magbasa kang mabuti before ka magreact.. and learn to read between the lines!...=)

to the csb students who are so pissed off by this blog entry: i think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. please remember the facts... first of all, anton is obviously from la salle. why in the hell would he talk crap about solomon guest house?! second, i read the review twice and it was actually a FAVOURABLE review! He had a few suggestions for improvement, but in general he was very, very generous with his praise. he clearly likes the place!
third, he had to compare solomon to the other places out there because he's a writer. that's what writers do. they research, compare, then give their own opinion. don't take it so personally! so his wife did not like the food... big deal?! you can't please everyone. even the best chefs in europe and america lose their michelin stars because of bad reviews and you don't see them going on a rampage.
you're obviously young and still learning... be gracious and accept criticisms like an adult. all this ranting and whining is very immature and unprofessional. My sister also went to your school and now she's doing very well with her catering business, thanks to years of hard work and fine-tuning her craft. you're just starting out and you have a long way to go... learn from this and try to do better. that's really the only logical thing to do.

I agree with you wtf?. I also read Anton's blog on Solomon's and I actually thought that he did the place a favor. If not for this blog entry I would have not known that there is such a place around the DLSU-CSB area and because of Anton's blog I will go check this place out. Anton thanks for sharing this. You actually gave me an idea on how me & my husband will celebrate our 4th wedding anniv next month. We are both La Sallians and maybe we could go re-visit La Salle--where we met--(nostalgic ang drama) and then we could go to Solomon's Guest House for lunch.

woah. i usually don't read comments but this is way interesting. :P
and I agree, it was actually a favorable review. After reading it I took down the address and planned to go there on Saturday. So I'm quite surprised to read raging comments from people from the school.
I guess school pride often pushes people to do crazy stuff.

"ang mga pinoy nga naman, masyadong know-it-all when it comes to english grammar. tsk tsk tsk." bakit ano ka ba? so ibig sabihin know-it-all ka din? hahahahaha..
and finally!
jus mio
"masyado kasing epalogs yung isa jan eh. talak ng talak man day! basahin mo ulit ang review ni anton bago ka magreklamo. at day, wag ka na kaya mag focus sa culinary arts? pwede ka ng maging grammar police! kina-career mo eh."

wtf -- it seems that you are so affected! you must be a very close friend of aton! anton's blog was very much appreciated and taken positively, but the other blog entry made by his wife was plain criticism and thats the disadvantage of having a blog, you can criticize and disparage other people and just say that it is my own opinion and that you cannot react negatively on my posts because this is for your improvement and all, who the hell gave them the right to criticize other people? any credentials? and as you've said: you can't please everyone, so their blog entry did not please those people who were reacting negatively, so if they can criticize other people, why cant they be criticized? as the saying goes: A good anvil does not fear the hammer.
Posted by: Mina | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 08:18 AM
i thought anton's comments were favorable too...made me want to check out the place...now i'm kinda hesitant na.
If the people there are like the ones here..almost scary..if you make a comment, they might spit on your food.. :) ok, i was just kidding...
btw,if its his wife's blog people are really taking issue with, why not post comments there na lang...?
:)

Probably not a lot of Lasallians from Main know about Solomon. Quite sad, really. I only found at about Solomon when I met some new friends who were taking up HRIM then at the time, one was a practicumer (had a crush on him too LOL) I remember being happily surprised with the quality of service and food there given the low price points.
I agree with Anton's comment about the pasta though. I love pesto pasta, but their version was too creamy/soggy.
Anyway, Solomon's just such a long walk from Taft = effort. And come on, you can't always give effort to buying lunch.
It's too bad I stay in Makati now, though.
Hey, you've made me want to check out those other practicum restaurants.

hahahaha aiywa, are you serious?! they are from Benilde, and their course is not quite cheap... and spitting on thier customer's food is not included in their culture... hahahaha.. they pay a hundred thousand per trimester so obviously all of them belong to class A society and they will not waste their precious time and money to just spit on your food. wala ka sigurong pambili.. poor! slums! hahahaha

After reading all the comments, you just lost my respect for you. Future Chefs, you still have a long way to go and the way you reacted was far from being professional. Bilib na sana ako not until i saw your bratty posts... "madami pa kayong bigas na kakainin" and I'm sure in your journey as a professional chef, you will encounter the same situation again and again... I hope that when that time comes, you will remember this incident and hopefully remember this post as well.
A piece of advice "keep your cool, relax and have fun" its only you that can ruin yourself and your reputation.
Mr. Anton, you are indeed a REAL food blogger unlike others who blog for free lunch. Hope to see you again at the Solomon Guest House. Im pretty sure the students will prepare something nice for you.
Grammar master, please spare me from your grammar check. TIA

i have a different point of view. I think these students from solomon were able to fight for what is RIGHT and JUST! Lasalle has been fighting for the truth ever since and i am glad that these students were able to make a stand regarding this matter! I have read the blog of Anton and i would agree that it was fair but the blog entry of his wife was really abrasive! I believe that these future chefs will make it big in the future for they possess integrity and talent. I would just like to commend Byron Francisco you are indeed a true Benildean, and you are quite impressive with your grammar. Good luck hijo in your future endeavors! To all the future chefs of solomon, just be true to yourselves and dont let anyone hinder you from reaching your goals. Aim high and keep learning in TRUTH and LOVE

Masyadong mahingin yung Byron ah. Kung ganyan lang magseserve sakin sa Solomon, I'd rather not eat there. Nakakawalang gana. Such a bratty guy. Oh well.
Hahahaha!
CHILLAX lang mga bata! I agree with the poster who said "marami pa kayong kakaining bigas".

I agree with the poster who said "marami pa kayong kakaining bigas". Kung ngayon pa lang, bratyy, bitter at laitero na kayo, ano pa kaya sa future? CHILL lang!"
Byron: gusto mo ma-experience pagka brat ko? eto na:
"CHILLAX lang mga bata!"
--> para sayo to ikaw ang galit na galit e
"I agree with the poster who said "marami pa kayong kakaining bigas"."
--> bratyy? (wrong spelling)
--> bitter? (bakit naman? kanino? haha, wrong choice of word!)
--> laitero? (pakicheck lang kung sino unang nanglait, sinagot ko lang ang mga panglalait sa akin, at bakit affected ka? siguro ikaw yun? hahaha) may nasabi ba ako against you? bakit galit na galit ka? haha =)
"ano pa kaya sa future?"
--> i have no idea! future nga e, ikaw alam mo?
"CHILL lang!"
--> para sayo yan! hahahahaha

....this is 'one' of the biggest reasons why it is 'urgent' to 'cancel' all donations in the philippines in particular except for{excluding life threatening conditions like food and the pprograms of philippines pres. g.m. arroyo}in particular until september i,2008....because of the danger of the 'escalations' of some filipinos extra unnecessary 'arrogances' that defeats the purpose of having pprograms in the first place....like english grammars-spelling perfections though they're filipinos naturally speaking tagalog etc..... that should not be tolerated to make sure their extra 'unnecessary arrogance' will not become a threat to all foreign investors who sacrifices almost everything to help 'improve' to 'benefit' philippines future survival then just have to suffer again from drawbacks because of 'unreliable' escalating 'arrogances' developed along with the sacrifice 'improvements' that some filipinos sees it as their own selfish self serving 'opportunities' instead of needed future 'survival'....no amount of gods in any kinds of religions in any countries in the past centuries had chance to 'overpower' arrogance that destroyed many past civilizations....so taming it-them{escalations}now before it escalate further-worsts anyone can imagine is not a bad start so all those hesitants on the 'word' of silent 'intelligent design' maybe should act fast or sooner before it is too late for others to comprehend to what's about to come decade from now where men in power uses wars in past decades centuries instead of a simple 'awareness programs' lol.....meaning 'disasters' are 'preventable' just knowing where-how-when to start by remembering a dollar starts with a penny or life starts after 'matings' became 'timely' lol....

meaning we cannot tolerate in an early advanced stage another escalating view of a 'nazi' like psychological behaviour of pure perfections 'only' as an acceptable non compromising society....'reverse' situations or history or not does'nt matter....just think 'if' by any chance the future meet a 'road' where there are no u turns anywhere around it{hypothetical joke}lol....just don't tell anyone you were not made aware ahead of the possibilities lol....

remember filipino children....this is an 'example' of philippines good economic times....shown here are how some local filipinos 'extra' big success stories fame influences or survival are earned thru arrogance belittling others because they can't handle criticisms mocking of other people's non topic-issues personnal attacks supportive of agressive behaviours or even welcoming of verbally abusive activities around them besides the highly acceptances of 'degrading' their own country and countrymen....being rude & sinister a good example of a public acceptances here by putting down {your own culture or your country's societies are best shown here as tickets or 'ride' to extra sucess & extra attention lol shown here real great example or ways to educate your children in the future according to this particular site lol and how can you 'beat' this kind of filipino 'best' public education system coming from solomon's guest house when their best pieces of how acceptable 'aggressive' behaviours of public displayed will be put into 'highest' esteem of the finest filipino class level in society describe by the solomon's guest house by throwing big food parties welcoming those who supported 'putting down' their own country those filipinos & cultures who they believed was not their equals or levels lol what a way of 'teaching' filipino children by changing the 'morality' of their own country's via internet websites lol watch out BB binibining pilipinas your english & accent was 'boooed' by great wonderful admirable 'characteristic' of a good highly educated filipino citizens in last philippines bb.pilipinas beauty pageant lol meaning you 'must' not win or even recognized or else the world will branded pilippines as a low 'esteemed' society lol meaning you do not belong to the high 'esteemed' A level class of solomon's house society lol really what a great place to learned 'higher' standards of educated filipinos and a great country like philippines that must be really be 'proud' off lol well what i can say if it is an acceptable 'agressive behaviour' by the solomon's guest house A level class of 'highest' esteemed filipino societies then who i am not to defy this new phoenomena

Be humble. Respect and listen to other view points.

excuse me! where exactly in my posts did i malign the institution? and where exactly in my posts did i mortify anyone?
"napaka unprofessional mo"
--> a mere expression of personal opinion connotes unprofessionalism? how feeble can you get?!
" Be humble. Respect and listen to other view points."
