Krispy Kreme vs. Go Nuts Donuts

By

The verdict is out! Krispy Kreme is the King of Doughnuts!

I was surprised yesterday that Krispy Kreme sent not only one box but enough doughnuts to feed our entire company during merienda. Thanks Krispy Kreme!! I actually missed it since I was working from home yesterday and I had to ask one of our guys to deliver one box at home. I heard they are giving away 100,000 doughnuts to test run their equipment and at the same time, to serve as their non-traditional marketing campaign since they don’t plan to have a TV commercial. Well, I don’t think they need any more advertisement because this was already done for them through word of mouth, won’t you agree? Most of the big Makati Companies were fortunate enough to receive this most coveted doughnut 🙂

We had to conduct the taste test immediately while the doughnuts are still fresh. We had five people to serve as our panel for the event. I won’t reveal their names but one is a culinologist by profession who runs kusina bilidad; a lady from the HR team of McCann Erikson; an IT project manager from one of America’s biggest retailer Safeway; a dedicated and beautiful housewife; and a photo blogger. Unanimously, all of us agreed that Krispy Kreme is the best doughnut and I hate to admit it but it is true.

We were able to buy Go Nuts and the much raved about Cello donuts who fortunately have a store in front of DLSU. We did not include Hoops donuts anymore, as requested too, because it was not somewhere near where we can immediately run and buy one from it.

Can you guess which one is the Go Nuts and which one is the Krispy Kreme?

The Final Ranking:

1. Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnuts (P30) — (http://www.krispykreme.com.ph/)
The dough is super airy soft with the right firmness to still have the right form and “bite” that is unbeatable by any other doughnuts. The doughnut is thinly glazed over that literally melts in your hand when you touch it and with double joy, melts in your mouth when you bite into it. Everybody agrees that the honey glaze is too sweet which is both good/ bad in a way. So, it will be nice to have it with hot milk or hot coffee to serve as the break from eating those doughnuts. After eating the doughnut, the sweetness lingers in your mouth when the glaze melts but it does not make you feel thirsty. It has an addicting factor that I suggest you stay away from this temptation. Also, if you are trying to lose weight and trying to stay healthy, do not attempt to even get a taste of this because you might ruin your diet plan and health. Lastly, I think the price will be a factor when buying this one.

2. Go Nuts Donuts Amazing Glaze Donuts (P18) — (http://www.gonutsdonuts.net/)
The dough feels a lot firmer and certain hardness than the Krispy Kremes. In fact, without the Krispy Kreme comparison, I’m sure you won’t notice this. The glaze is a little thicker and has the right amount of sweetness. I think Go Nuts was able to perfect the right amount of sweetness for the Filipino taste bud. The taste feels like a duplicate of the Krispy Kreme when KK doughnuts are already in its 2-3 day existence. Unanimously, everybody agree that Krispy Kreme is way a lot better. But I’m sure that Krispy Kreme won’t have Go Nuts pastilas version.

3. Cello’s Original Doughnuts (P20) — a far third and a little more expensive than Go Nuts, these doughnuts taste like margarine and the dough is more of a bread. So these should be called breadnuts with margarine 🙂 Seriously, these kinds of doughnuts goes well with their different toppings. So if we just compare the original honey glazed doughnuts, this won’t even compare. Also, once you eat them, you will feel thirsty since it makes your mouth dry as observed by our culinologist friend. But then again, when you just eat them without anything to compare it with, this may pass your taste bud too!

In terms of packaging, I would also go with Krispy Kreme anytime because of its simplicity. What I like about Go Nuts is that they really do understand the Filipino consumer and that is why they have a box of 3 with special Christmas decorations for a more affordable take home to our loved ones.

And oh, check out Gonuts Donuts’ website (http://www.gonutsdonuts.net) for promos that will surely make you come back for more!

One Point Lesson: How to eat a doughnut

Step 1: Smell the doughnuts like you do for red wine.

Step 2: Grab one of the doughnuts with convinction.

Step 3: Eat the doughnuts and pretend that nobody is looking at you 🙂

Enjoy your Krispy Kreme Doughnuts!!

  1. Eat like no one’s watching? What a great mantra to live by.
Nice to know that Krispy Kreme lives up to its global reputation. But of course when comparing them to Gonuts there’s always the price factor (67% more expensive?!?) and the Pinoy factor (I’m more inclined to support the Filipino-made brand). =)

  2. That must have been tons of fun, putting these donuts to the test! Wish I had been there. 🙂 For me, there isn’t much of a contest. Gonuts Donuts, while good in its own way, cannot compare to the melt-in-your-mouth and just plain yumminess factor of Gonuts. I would pay the extra money for that.

  3. amen. and AMEN! KRISPY KREME is definitely the king of all donuts. our managing director waltzed into the office with a box of 12 glazed chocolate cake donuts from KK! it turns out he’s been getting a box almost every 2 days from his friend.
maaaan. i want moooooore!!! ack. kk is sooooo addicting. november 30 come quickly!!!!

  4. Wow, haven’t been able to try it yet. I hope it’s not just the Pinoy colonial mentality that’s speaking when they say it’s “way better” better than Gonuts. I’ve heard it from the same people who swear they can’t live without Starbucks, but were perfectly fine a few years ago when all they had was brewed Barako and 3-in-1, haha!
At 30 pesos, I don’t think Krispy Kreme will eat up much of the share Gonuts and others already have in the donut industry. But it’s certainly a welcome addition to our food choices!

  5. Maybe I’m just not a big doughnut fan…Have had Krispy Kreme on trips abroad and didn’t find it addictive. What I do miss from the States are Dunkin Donuts’ crullers – so light, fluffy and not too sweet – and their Dunkaccino coffee concoction. Paging Dunkin Donuts!!!

  6. wow. i just ate 2 original glazed doughnuts from KK! haha=) i’m really not much of a doughnut person but i like it. it melts in your mouth. i also wanted to try it because i wasn’t able to have it like 2 years ago when a friend of my bro came and gave us 2 boxes of krispy kreme! so my bf brought me home a box of it. anyway, i like it and i wanna taste the other flavors as well. the chocolate sounds good. =)

  7. oh yeah, they’re having a promo thing for krispy kreme. the first one to get there and ring the cashier will win a one year supply of krispy kreme doughnuts! and they’ll open on november 30 at 8:30am. =)

  8. Actually, Aidan looks more delish to me than the Krispy kreme in the box, he he he, super cute talaga nyang little tot nyo na yan!

  9. Dude, I think you got mixed up on a couple of points.
First of all, if you ask anyone who has already tasted Go Nuts (which is virtually everyone in the metro), he or she will tell you that their doughnuts are way too sweet (actually, the term people often use is “nakaka-umay”), so I’m wondering where “… Go Nuts was able to perfect the right amount of sweetness for the Filipino taste bud …” came from.
That’s why many of us who have ready access to Cello’s find the company’s doughnuts much more palatable. And I don’t particularly agree when you said that Cello’s “doughnuts taste like margarine and the dough is more of a bread”. Maybe you were speaking of another, more popular, doughnut brand…
By the way, I’m not affiliated with Cello’s in any way. I’m just expressing the honest opinion of an ordinary man who loves his doughnuts.

  10. I got my 2 boxes yesterday and distributed them among family and friends for an impromptu taste test. The texture, taste and consistency does set a KK doughnut apart from the rest (although Go Nuts does come a distant second). I might just be one of those who’ll line up for the 8am opening next Thursday. I wonder if it’ll have a set-up similar to the Go Nuts flagship wherein you can view the production line.

  11. Anton – hindi naman dapat ka-join ang Cello’s. I don’t know why there’s was such wooohooo hype with those ordinary donuts. Para akong kumain ng Julie’s Bakeshop na tinapay. I can do without Cello’s and in fact, I prefer Country Style’s krueller pa!
Ako, I won’t diss Gonuts… It served us well and gave us our fix when KK was but a dream. After all, minsan din naman tayong nalinlang at pumila sa Fort for that…. Ngayong nandito na ang KK and given that donuts are in every foodie’s realm of consciousness, I think Gonuts can still give us a quick fix. Besides, kumita na sila!
    Cute ni Aidan!

  12. will KK bake other donut varieties? like the one they bake in the US: glazed choco dough/choco-honey-dipped-like? God, this is my favorite. chewy semi-bittersweet choco dough plus melts-in-your-mouth-super-sweet glaze. ah, heaven…

  13. I had been in California x 6 months last year. I had been craving for Krispy Kreme. However, my cousins & relatives isnt interested in eating it. When I eat & try a new food or craze, I want to be with friends who are also eager.
This Christmas, me & my friends were really craving for it and we went to The Fort. It is good that the line is not as bad as when we had for Gonuts! For a change, they were giving free sample of the original glazed. It was still freshly baked and was really good. However, when I bought the assorted. I wasnt really that impressed. It was just like Gonuts!
The price is not affordable for Filipinos, I would say I will have no second thoughts but buy either Dunkin Donuts or Gonuts next time.
At least, we had satisfied our cravings!!!

I completely enjoyed receiving your donuts through the ZoneChefs program. It made my day when I would see that I had a Holey Donut on the menu. If you sell out of any midtown or Hoboken locations I would like to know so that I can spread the word!!

I love your donuts! I was introduced to Holey Donuts through ZoneChefs Delivery, and so far I’ve tried Boston Cream, Lemon, Chocolate Frosted and Raspberry. They are all amazing! It’s hard to believe they’re low fat. It sounds silly, but I really look forward to the days I find a Holey Donut in my Zone meal bag. They’re so yummy, I feel like I’m cheating on my diet. Thanks for the treat!

Comments : Hello: I read about Holey Donuts and fell in love with the idea !! I checked out your website and just think this concept is a great idea ! I enjoy donuts so much, but can only eat one (two, at the most) on any given day due to the high sugar and fat content. I think this is a great idea to reduce the fat and still have an enjoyable eating experience. Just wondering if you are staying locally in NYC for now, or if the sales idea applies nationally. Please let me know. If you would be interested in shipping donuts to Kansas City ! Regards, Douglas Rittenhouse

after reading and seeing your donuts on the site, i am dying to try them, and have been hoping that someone would come out with a lowfat gourmet donut, for what seems like forever to no avail! i am a donut lover, but have given them up since i have been on a lowfat diet now and those regular donuts from krispie kreme, etc really start to add up in calories in fat!

    Hello,
Congratulations on developing what seems to be a great product!

  15. there is actually a krispy kreme take on the pastillas de leche flavor of go nuts–dulce de leche.. dulce de leche is similar to pastillas but actually dulce is more of caramel.. however, this is not yet available here.

  16. hi, my boyfriend and i went to sm megamall, and he being a doughnut lover, and i not minding at all, went to Krispy Kreme to try their controversial doughnuts! Being new there, we just decided to buy one (as it is expensive and we just want to know about its taste and difference from other stores – gonuts, cello’s, dots and more)… As we were paying, one of their staff handed us a honeyglazed doughnut, still warm from the oven. When we tasted it.. wow!! It felt like heaven, literally!! So yummy and what i like about it is that it’s not too sweet (i am not keen on doughnuts because i think they are too sweet for my taste) But that one was just perfect! Too bad, it’s a little bit pricey..

  17. Personally, I find Krispy Kreme doughnuts to be too sweet for my taste. 15g of sugar for their regular honeyglazed as compared to Dunkin glazed, which is only 6g of sugar. Of course if you have a sweet tooth, why not? Extra calories? Sure! I think some bloggers here are dazzled by the fact that it’s a US franchise and that they were given some free. Hey, I would extol something to high heaven if it were given to me free too.
FYI… a lot of their branches in the US have closed down. They’re not as popular as they were 3 years ago. Linalangaw sila sa Costco. The trick is, you have to eat them hot and fresh from the oven so you don’t really taste how much sweeter they are than other brands. Other than that – they’re too expensive a pop.
But sure, gain some more pounds with them, why don’t you?

  18. i am a krispy kreme store doughnut fan……my husband hates it when i gained so much weight from eating a dozen of doughnuts a day for 2 weeks he was happy when they closed some of their american branches but i was sad because i love krispy kreme doughnuts even if my husband will divorce me over it LOL! LOL!

  19. My teacher used to talk about Krispy Kreme and he said that it is expensive but it is delicious.I would like to try it if I already have a job…Just Kidding,i want to try it now but i don’t have money yet.,I am just a senior high school eh…heheh

  20. Krispy kreme and go nuts : TO EFFIN SWEET! let your bellies tell you that.
Cello’s : nice and perfect! i commend the owner for developing it. It’s not just tinapay, you know. They purposely made it that way to differentiate themselves and it turned out great! Young millionaires.
