My Kaya Addiction

By

I am officially a member of Kaya-holic anonymous. I’m totally addicted to Kaya!

Super thanks to Anton Lim for bringing me these two bottles of super addicting Kaya! There are two versions, the usual Authentic Ya Kun Kaya brand from the Ya Kun chain in Singapore. The other one is from Toast Box which gained a good following with allegedly long lines in their Wisma Atria outlet. I love them both!

The Ya Kun version comes in green color brought about by pandan. It also has the same consistency as the sweet filling in Brazo de Mercedes and it taste like it too. The this Kaya version boast of all natural ingredients of egg, sugar, coconut milk and pandan. Imagine a leche flan that you can spread in your pandesal and enjoy it for its sweetness. Put it with butter and toast it together, and you will have your own Kaya toast right in your own home! I can even put as many jam as I want unlike when I buy it at the Kopi Roti store. It is perfect if it goes with your own coffee with condensed milk.

The Toast Box version comes in golden brown color because of the honey. This is similar to our Coconut Jam with a honey twist and a smoother light consistency. I was wondering why our own coconut jam, is not elevated to this level of addicting status. If you love the honey taste, then this is perfect for you. I agree with Anton Lim that this is a special kind of Kaya that is worth lining up for. Thanks Thanks so much!

I do hope these Kaya bottles could last me until end-November. But I doubt it though 🙂

  1. hi anton!
Whenever i go to Malaysia (ive been there 3 times the least 4 months), i make sure to grab a small jar of kaya. But im not sure that qualifies me as a kaya-holic as im not yet an expert in deciphering the differetnt tastes of kaya. Lahat sila masarap eh.
But i havent encountered the brands that you featured here. The ones i get are normally just from the grocery store.
Care for a jar when i go back to malaysia? might not be as good as the ones featured here, but what the hey 🙂
    dale

  2. Last year till early this year when I went to St. Francis Tiangge behind Megamall, I saw a stall in the basement food court selling kaya. May free sample pa nge e, pero di ko pinapansin. I only appreciated it when I went to Kopi Roti. You can check if the stall’s still there…

  3. You’re right Anton, kopi roti barely spreads kaya on their kaya toast. It was a real let down. But oh god, oh god, those kaya jars are hypnotic! Which do you like the best, though? I only get to taste the pandan-infused one.
And Anton Lim (a.k.a. Marionette?), can I be your friend, too? hehehe.

  4. I asked my friend to buy me Ya Kun kaya from Singapore. I can’t wait to make my own kaya toast! Love kaya! 😛

  5. Kaya also goes great with suman! I tried it in Malaysia (in Kuching) and also had it in KL and it tastes really nice, though a bit filling for dessert. More apt for merienda.
Their rice cakes are a bit different though, a little less flavorful, less salty as compared to ours. But i think that it would still work with our suman.

  6. anton – no problem. glad to be able to give you KAYA rush. 🙂 if there’s anything i can, email me lang.
shaui – hahaha! of course. i could ask people to bring you kaya from singapore, or bring it to you myself. email me at tonlim0129@gmail.com

  7. I’m very interested in buying some for my dad. It seems like something he would like. Too bad the chances of finding this in the US is nil. 🙁

  8. Hi Anton.
Do you still love Kaya jam? I have started making this kaya jam at home since I also fell in love with it when I was in KL a month ago.
Do email me so if you’re having kaya jam cravings and I’ll send you some.
    Thanks!
