Superman IMAX Experience!
Rate this post:
My brother picked me up at our place at 11pm and we drove to the Mall of Asia (MOA) to watch the last full show of Superman on its opening day. I felt a sense of childish excitement in seeing back on the screen the super hero of our times -- Superman. This time, we will be watching it in a 8-storey high IMAX theater and we were excited to see Superman in a 3D form! I can proudly say that we belonged to the Superman generation and there was a sense of nostalgia with Superman Returns. We arrived at MOA, 30 minutes later, and immediately felt the excitement in the IMAX theater lobby amongst the people patiently waiting to go in for the midnight show. There were all kinds of people in the lobby: the people who proudly wear a dark blue superman shirt inside their jackets with the superman logo peeking out of their chest, the personalities who appears to come from the Preview party last weekend, barkada patiently waiting in line to get a popcorn and the usual girlfriend and boyfriend sweety couple. It was already 12:40pm when we were able to sit on our reserved seats. The show schedules were messed up by the press so they were only able allow people to go inside at around 12:30pm. You can tell that everybody was excited to get their nice 3d glasses and everyone started to take their own pictures via their mobile phone, or digital cameras (which were allowed only at the start). The sense of excitement, and anticipation is in the air, including that of my brother, Rommel and his friend, Igi who were an IMAX first timers and was amazed by huge screen in front of them!
Then the "Lupang Hinirang" national anthem was played, and soon after, the green goggles sign appeared on the bottom of the IMAX screen. This signals you to wear your 3d glasses and our jaw literally drop with just even the bumper count down, 4, 3, 2, 1 with concentric circles rotating around the numbers in 3D! Then the next 10 minutes was an awesome showcase of what IMAX 3d is all about specially when the trailer of T-REX was shown. You can actually see the T-REX breathing down your necks -- Awesome! You can hear the oohhs and aahhs from the audience, and shouting of "astig", "the best", and "ang galing" culminated with a wild applause from the audience. We thought that the 3d rendition of the trailers were the best even versus the 3d clips in Superman.
We were seated on row C which is the third row from the screen. Watching the commercials made us very dizzy since they were not designed to be shown on IMAX, they had lousy picture resolution. Also, even for the 3D portions in Superman returns if the scene is fast paced action and it is dark, it was very hard to see. My eye hurt after watching the show either because of how near we were or because the movie finished at 3.30am. There were only four times I believe that superman was in 3D:
1). The first 3d scene was when superman after going back to earth, was reminiscing about his teenager days when he discovered that he has powers. He was running so fast in the corn fields and jumped with joy like the hulk when he gets angry.
2). The second scene was during the time Superman rescued the space shuttle which got stuck into the commercial plane upon its launch and dragged the plane into space. You would appreciate the 3d movie when Superman landed the plane in the middle of a football field, opened the door, greeted lois lane, and smiled to the crowd. Awesome 3d moment!
3). My favorite scene was when Superman rescued Lois Lane and his son who were trapped inside a sinking boat. He pulled the huge boat out of the water, suspend it in mid air, opened the door, pulled out lois lane + family and let go of the boat.
4). The last 3d portion was when Superman was revived again, and saying his famous lines to his son " The son becomes the father, and the father becomes the son. " Then he saw Lois lane for the last time in the movie and flew out to the night sky.
Aside from the 3d effects, I always felt a tingling sensation in my bones every time I hear the Superman theme song. It was both childish nostalgia of seeing the Superman of our childhood days and a feeling of extreme satisfaction. We felt that P350 was all worth it.

Tandoor King - Indian-inspired Fast Food in Mall of Asia
Rate this post:
I love food adventure and I'm always excited to try innovative food. So when my friend Grace called me raving about this new indian place in the Mall of Asia, I can't wait to taste their Indian-inspired food. Like most restaurants in the Mall of Asia, they are on soft opening mode and hence, there is an invisible sign that says "Proceed with caution". My wife and I only agreed that the Mixed Tikka Pizzanaan is an absolute winner but the rest of the food got mixed reactions. First and foremost, the reason for being of the restaurant is its Tandoori Chicken cooked in a very hot special clay oven with charcoal. I loved the spicy Tandoori taste where the chicken is marinated in a mixture of herbs, spices and yogurt that give it a distinctive red color and it has a distinctive smoky flavor. However, my wife was expecting a sweet teriyaki taste but it failed to meet this expectation. Since this is a fast food concept, the food is very affordable with a price range of P100-P200 max.
Technorati Tags: Mall of Asia, Manila, Philippines, Restaurants
The menu is simple. You can choose from rice toppings called curry tops, Tandoori set menu, Pizzanaans and Chapawraps.
Contrary to popular belief, weekdays shopping in MOA is pleasurable since there are only a few people at night. It was a slow night, I should say, for the Tandoor King when we ate there. This was perfectly fine for us since we won't be too conscious when we take photos of the food and surroundings.
Beef Oriental Chapawraps (P95). Chapati rolled with meats, onions, and lettuce.
The chapati becomes hardens when cold and the beef used was very dry. It is safe to say that this is not one of their strongest menu item in their line-up. We also ordered their Iced Tea Masala (35) which is a spicy ice tea (yuck yuck yuck or saying it in a politically nice way, it is an acquired taste.) , and the Nepalese Ice Tea (P25) which is an ice tea with a twist in taste which we found ordinary.
Mixed Tikka of Paneer Cheese, Button Mushroom and Chicken (P190).
I love paneer cheese and I never tasted it used in a pizza. The crust of the pizza is thin, textured and crunchy until our last bite. Since this is a fast food joint, everything is prepared already and all they need to do is heat this. Also, you would notice that the plates are all made of plastic. The chili sauce and the sour cream yogurt sauce taste different from your Cafe Mediterranean sauce so you need to get used to it.
Tandoori Chicken (P175) served with Saffron Rice, Heavenly salsa and Tandy Sauce.
I love the tandoori chicken because of its herb spicy taste that doesn't have the disgusting odor when you eat in other Indian restaurants. It goes very well with the Saffron rice. As I said, my wife was not impressed. I was actually surprised to learn that this outlet is owned by the LGC group who also owns Cafe Havana and Anghang among others.
Tandoori King. Unforgettable flavors, cookery as old as history.
Unit 146 and 147, South Parking Bldg, SM Mall of Asia.
It is located in the south parking building in front of Teriyaki Boy.

" Superman Return, directed by Bryan Singer starring Brandon Routh as Clark Kent and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. Catch the world's first live-action hollywood feature converted into IMAX 3D. Using proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology, select scenes (up to 20 minutes) will be converted into an IMAX 3D experience, the most immersed cinematic 3D in the world. On screen cues will alert movie goers when to place the 3D glasses on, and when to take them off. "
Would you pay P350 just to watch a Superman IMAX movie which is probably the most expensive movie ticket in the Philippines today! As of June 26 7pm, most of the prime time show times for the first 5 days are sold out (blue shaded) already with the orange shaded show times with only limited slots in the front rows. I'm among those people who wanted to see this superman on its first day so I actually bought tickets for the midnight show on the first day. (Just a tip: be careful in buying advance tickets, I almost had the mistake of buying a 12noon ticket for a 12midnight show. ) See you in IMAX!!

Definitions of peri peri on the Web:
Just by its definition, you can tell that the peri peri chicken would taste something exotic. After roasting the chicken for 30mins, it is then subjected to a spit fire oven before being served to the guest. The white meat was just as tasty as the dark meat that every bite was juicy and releases the flavorful taste of herbs and spices. One would be surprised that the usual chicken wing can now be eaten with much gusto unlike when you eat Baliwag's or Andok's that it just goes to waste. The experience was similar to the CNT lechon of Cebu where you do not need any more sauce to supplement its taste and it can stand on its own. Although for chili lovers, you might opt to try their unique peri peri chili sauce which could be an acquired taste because we are used to the tabasco chili sauce or the garlic chili taste in chinese restaurants. The sidelines are nothing but ordinary but the place turns over diners like a fast food restaurant.
I'm not surprised that this less than a month old restaurant is such a hit and this became famous through word of mouth. Although, I was sad that Peri Peri Chix replaced Kohikan's spot in Greenhills Prominade. This is their first store and I'm sure at the rate they are going, I'm hopeful that they will open in Glorietta soon! Check out the rest of the photos of the peri peri chicken experience. Thanks to Pam and Tanya for the tip!

The vegetable was crunchy fresh with the peri peri sauce which tasted like light sour cream mayonnaise, was just OK.
This was just a perfect order with the Java garlic rice which blends very well with the spit-fire grilled chicken. I liked their benefit claim of "spit-fired grilled to juicy goodness. "

Peri Peri Chicken Experience
"Piri-piri, peri-peri or peli-peli is the name used in Portuguese and a number of African languages to describe the African bird's-eye chilli, a member of the capsicum plant genus. This is a small and extremely spicy variety. The variations in spelling derive from the various pronunciations of the word in parts of Africa, although "piri-piri" is the correct spelling in Portuguese. " (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peri_peri)
The place was cozy but the tables are closed to each other. If you are a big group, you might want to reserve in advance.

Sonja's Cupcakes--- Creating the Cupcake Craze in the Philippines?
Rate this post:
What happens when a passionate baker, who had a stint in New York's Magnolia Bakery, famous for its cupcakes which have a cultish following (where Carrie and Miranda of Sex in the City devoured cupcakes), opens up a bakery store dedicated in selling cupcakes in Serendra by July 2006, and bakes the most mouth watering cupcakes I have ever seen in the Philippines? Just maybe, we are looking at the next dessert cupcake craze in the Philippines! As Lori pointed out in her article, "Cupcakes for a birthday girl and an anxious mom", the cupcake craze have not yet taken off in Manila but it is one of those desserts that are absolutely loved by kids. I recently recall an interesting article by Lori regarding her daughter Boo baking art cup cakes. There are in fact, an entire blog dedicated to cupcakes and recipes: Chokylit's Cupcake Bakeshop blog, and Cupcake Queen's 52 Cupcakes.
I got this tip from Christine's blog "Ramblings from a Gypsy Soul" and I immediately got hooked and I was not disappointed. The cupcakes are heavy because they are full of ingredients and not one of those cupcakes from local bakeries that are full of air. One cupcake which costs P45 for the classic ones and P65 with special ingredients, is actually enough for one sitting. So just imagine how much weight my wife and I gained in devouring 18 cupcakes in 4 days. This is to share with you what we think about Sonja's cupcakes. But just a disclaimer, I'm really not fond of cupcakes and as a child we never really got into eating cupcakes for dessert, so read the following review from a point of view of a virgin cupcake lover.
Technorati Tags: Manila, Philippines, Restaurants
Pistachio Dacquoise - pistachio cake with almond nougatine.
As this moment, Sonja continues to experiment on her cupcake line up and this is one of them that does not have a price yet. Instantly, this became our favorite because of the perfect combination of creamy custard with the texture taste of thin wafer of almond nougatine and the crunchy taste of pistachio. This was an innovative cupcake although you have to always keep it in the ref to keep its form and taste. We ordered two of these, and we had the mistake of putting one in the freezer and it was as solid as ice cream which spoiled the entire cupcake experience. Although, one could argue that this just looks like another cake put in a cup, but the size is just perfect to satisfy your craving for a dessert. Alas now, I have another alternative aside from the addicting pistachio flavored ice cream I am fond of.
Sweet pleasures is a mousse cupcake that has a milk chocolate and chantilly cream with hazelnut crunch cake.
If you would ask me what is the one cupcake that I would recommend, then this must be it! Eating this conjures up images of everyone's favorite chocolate, Ferrero Rocher in a cupcake version. I'm not sure if it was intentional that this cupcake tasted like ferrero minus the macadamia nut but the similarity is so coincidental and hence, this became an instant hit for us. The hazelnut crunch cake with the sweet cream in the middle and the perfect coating of milk chocolate with an accent nutty taste is the best cupcake for me. Again, this is a mousse cupcake which means that you also need to keep this in the ref because this is best eaten when refrigerated. This is absolutely delicious for a virgin cupcake lover like me :)
Simply Pineapple cupcake - sweetened pineapple on top of an almond cake.
This cupcake tasted exactly like how it is described by Sonja. Nothing special but it might be good for people who loves almond cakes.
(Clockwise from top)
German Chocolate Cup- A Twist on an all-American Favorite. Classic Chocolate Cupcake with a gooey filling of Coconut, Macadamia and Bananas.
We didn't taste any macadamia nuts. The coconut was too much or maybe it was just that we are not too fond of dessicated coconut topped cupcakes.
Mocha Motion - Moist Chocolate Cupcake dolloped with a perfect frothy Mocha Buttercream Topping.
Ordinary mocha cupcake. But for those who likes sweet butter cream toppings, then this is a good choice.
PB & J's - Concorde Grape Jelly Filled Chocolate Cupcakes iced with Creamy Peanut Butter Frosting.
This would definitely be dracula's favorite cupcake...peanut butter with jelly...the chocolate flavored cupcake was too much to be combined with the pb&j...but then, what would be the best flavor to combine with this?...
Lemon Drop- Delicious Vanilla Cake smothered in our Signature Lemon Buttercream Frosting.
Frosting was too sweet but one has to eat the frosting and cupcake altogether to get the real lemon zesty taste!
Strawberry Shortcake - Pure Strawberry Cake with Fresh Strawberries and Whipped Cream Icing..
We had no idea that this would be a strawberry cupcake aside from the give away color of the cupcake until we had to really devour the pastry with its topping.
Bunny Huggers Carrot Cake - Very Moist Cake made with Fresh Carrots and Walnuts and topped with Cream Cheese Frosting...
We loved the way the moisture was maintained even after a day in our refrigerator. This is a tried and tested combination. Sweet with a little saltiness coming from the creamcheese and the pampaalis suya na walnut. (I don't know the english translation...)
Goin' Bananas - Peanut Butter - Banana Chocolate Cupcakes with Caramel Glaze and a Caramelized Banana.
This tasted like caramel brownies with sweetened saba. I personally loved this and the taste of banana was very filipino. I do hope that Sonja would come up with Filipino inspired cupcakes like a pure white cupcake pastillas, caramel yema cupcakes with langka on top, or the durian inspired cupcake complete with its smell... (don't mind me, I have too much cupcakes to eat)
Chocolate Surprise - Valrhona Chocolate Cupcakes topped with either our signature Vanilla Buttercream or Creamy Chocolate Frosting
or
Peppermint Patty - Rich and Delicious Chocolate Cake topped with our signature Peppermint Frosting.
We are not sure whether this was the chocolate surprise or the peppermint patty. Ordinary at best but kids might love their signature vanilla buttercream or creamy chocolate frosting. For me, the icing tasted like a fondant cake used in weddings. (Note to Sonja, would you know which one is the cupcake described above?)
Samoa Cupcake -- Coconut and Chocolate...
We are not really fond of dessicated coconut as an ingredient mixed in a chocolate cupcake. To coconut lovers, you might want to try this out!
Vanilla Sunshine - Magnolia Bakery's #1 Cupcake! A Classic and Fluffy Yellow Cake topped with either Vanilla or Chocolate Buttercream....
There are mixed reactions to this New York's Magnolia Bakery best seller. It is either you absolutely love the pure sugar taste of vanilla buttercream icing with the matching sweetness of the fluffy yellow cake, or you would be puzzled also like me on what's the real fuss about this cupcake? For us, it is nothing exciting, just your usual butter cupcake.
Mango Madness - Luscious Mango Filled Vanilla Cupcakes with Mango Ice Cream Frosting...
The cupcake itself was not that sweet which was all the better...and it tasted like the yellow cupcakes wrapped in red japanese paper usually given during chinese engagement party.
Red Velvet Vixen - Traditional Southern Cake made with Belgian Cocoa and Cream Cheese Icing...
Forgettable taste. I can't even remember how it tasted and I just ate it last night or maybe, I just have this Cupcake Fatigue (hehe)
Coffee Caramel Delice - new mousse cupcake in a cup...
All I can say is that I've tasted better versions of this coffee caramel cupcake...a tiramisu in a cup...
Vanilla Sunshine - Magnolia Bakery's #1 Cupcake! A Classic and Fluffy Yellow Cake topped with either Vanilla or Chocolate Buttercream....
This reminded me again of all the calories added on top of my usual eating habits in just four days! Boy, if an agent from Gold's Gym would invite me to get a personal trainer package from them, I would no doubt get it...it is really hard to get back in shape with all these temptations!
Bottomline: I'm now officially a cupcake lover and I can't wait for the Serendra Bakeshop to open soon. I'm sure Sonja would have more surprises for us on its opening day. So what would be your favorite cupcake?

Cupcakes by Sonja will be a cozy, comfortable New York Style Bakeshop, serving the best Cupcakes in the city. It will be Manila’s first and only bakery dedicated to selling Cupcakes. It will take us back to a time when we simply did everything the old-fashioned way: using the best and freshest ingredients, mixing them with lots of love, and taking the time to produce delicious homemade treats. It will be that perfect little shop you might happen upon in any American small town, selling perfectly frosted cupcakes. It will be the perfect place for people to meet for dessert, coffee and good conversation. It will also be a place where people can satisfy their sugar cravings after a night out. Cupcakes by Sonja Bakery will also offer other creative and mouthwatering selection of old-fashioned dessert delicacies aside from Cupcakes. The place is quaint and the kitchen will be open, so customers get to watch the entire process from the moment the cakes are placed into the oven till the time the frosting is carefully hand-frosted on top of the cupcakes.
(All Cupcakes are P45 each except the strawberry, Mango, German and Goin Bananas which are P65 each) We have boxes for 6 and boxes for 12 cupcakes)
Background
Introduction to Cupcakes
The cupcakes recent surge in popularity can be attributed to a sense of nostalgia. Instead of heavily trimmed gourmet cakes, people are starting to look for more home-style desserts that actually look handcrafted-something mom or grandma might have made.

10z Ribeye Steak. Airflown Certified Angus Beef (P 1,080)
Finally the best steakhouse in Tagaytay, exclusive to Tagaytay Highlands members only, opened last week in Mall of Asia! We ate there with my family last Friday and we were excited to find out that it was there second day of operation. I got the tip from Tanya, one of the bloggers I follow, and she is among those who absolutely love Highland's steakhouse. As for me, I'm not really a steak lover but I got interested with steaks ever since eating in Myron's. One of these days, I will try the suggestions of my readers to try out the steaks of Handle Bar in Makati and Steak MD in Tomas Morato.
Technorati Tags: Philippines, Restaurants
Henry's Barbecue Baby Back Ribs (whole rack) P680. Tender barbecue bourbon flavored imported baby back ribs.
My dad ordered this impressive whole rack of Baby Back ribs. You could taste the barbecue flavor consistently throughout the well marinated ribs. What I like about it is that you can taste the texture of the tender and juicy meat meat as you bite off from the piece of the rib. I actually forgot for a minute that this costs P680 pesos :)
Pan grilled Halibut with Wild mushroom Beurre Blanc (P680). My mom is a healthy eater and this is the only food item in the menu that she can eat. Just by the looks of it, the grilled eggplant with the wild mushroom and the so-called Buerre Blanc sauce gives a complimentary flavor to the fresh perfectly grilled halibut. I will definitely order this the next time I eat in this steakhouse and I'm still drooling by the looks of this halibut dish.
10z Ribeye Steak. Airflown Certified Angus Beef (P 1,080).
There is a 14oz version which costs P1,420 but I think the 10oz is more than enough for me and my wife. Our medium well steak was perfectly cooked with the right juicy tasty flavor. It is soft such that you can cut the meat easily and you can enjoy chewing on the meat. You will not complain with its thickness and I think this was one of the criticism's for the Myron's steak which looks like beef tapa compared to this slab of meat.
Highland's Steakhouse Menu. (similar to the original Tagaytay menu) Click here for a bigger version.
By the way, I would also recommend their Steakhouse Clam Chowder (P80) because of its rich creamy and flavorful taste that keeps you wanting for more with every spoonful taste.
With the look of its inviting interiors, you can't help it but amazed that such log cabin ambiance can be present in a mall setting. To complete the look of the restaurant, all the waiters are in their cowboy outfit with matching cowboy hat. All of them are friendly and trained very well.
Net, it would be an understatement if I say I love their delicious steak. Highland Steakhouse is offering a complete dining experience that is worth every peso that you pay for. Not to mention that they are perfectly located in the second floor besides IMAX and they also have a stunning view of the Manila Bay sunset. Can you ask for more? Yes, please have a high chair for the babies...
Just for people who would like to know more information about Sonja's cupcakes, below is the press kit write-up by Sonja:
(Cupcakes by Sonja Bakery will open in Serendra Fort Bonifacio July 2006)
The main influence for the concept of Cupcakes by Sonja is New York City’s Magnolia Bakery. It is this West Village quintessential corner bakeshop on Bleecker Street that placed cupcakes at the frenzied center of an international craze. When they opened their doors to the public back in 1996, New Yorkers started queuing around the block just to have a bite of these little confections. Then in 2000, they ended up being eaten by that other New York Style icon, Sex in the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, making the lines grow even longer. Soon, the cupcake boom was being trumpeted in fashion-magazine trend alerts and they started gracing the covers of numerous magazines from British Vogue to Gourmet Magazine. The demand for these magical miniatures exploded, so much that it spawned countless imitators. It didn’t take long before dozens of other bakeshops specializing on these heavily frosted and beautifully decorated cupcakes emerged. In this food-obsessed city, the all-American Cupcakes became everyone’s dessert of choice. The popularity of these goodies did not become just a New York City phenomenon, however. Stores selling nothing but cupcakes started opening all over the nation, some as far removed from the big Apple as Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Texas. Also catching the fever is Australia and Canada which both opened a Cupcake Bakeshop in the year 2005. It is this growing trend that led the founder, Sonja L. Ocampo, to feel that Manila should not stand in the way as the rest of the whole world embark on this sugary mini-cake odyssey. This is the main proponent for Sonja, a cupcake visionary, to create Cupcakes by Sonja, Manila’s first and only bakery dedicated to these childhood delicacies.
The cupcake is America’s darling. They appeal to all of us, no matter what our age is. They’re chic, elegant, cozy, comforting and cute. They go anywhere, at any time and are for anybody. They bring a surge of joy to three-year-olds and grandparents alike. Children love cupcakes because the size seems especially designed for them, and adults love cupcakes because they remind them of the time when they were a kid. Just the mention of the word Cupcakes, conjure up cozy, whimsy, comforting, celebratory memories of their childhood. And then there’s that delicious moment of peeling back the paper – it’s just like opening a present.
Nostalgic from its desserts to its décor, Cupcakes by Sonja Bakery will hark back to the warm feeling of American kitchens. The business will emphasize a slow-paced, wholesome way of life reminiscent of 1950s America. Customers will be transported back in time to “Mom’s” or “Grandma’s” warm, cozy kitchen, with butter, fresh eggs, and other natural ingredients in abundance, just lying about and waiting to go into mixers. There will be an old-fashioned feel to it.
Ms. Sonja Ocampo is one of the owners of the Good Earth Tea Rom Restaurant in Greenbelt 3 Mall, Alabang Town Center and Metrowalk Ortigas. She is also the head Purchasing Manager for all three branches. She graduated BS Marketing Management from De La Salle University. She is a graduate of the Wilton School of Cake Decorating in Illinois, USA where she honed her skills in the art of making wedding cakes. She is also a graduate of both the Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts Program of the Institute of Culinary Education (Formerly known as the Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School) in New York. She then landed a job together with a working permit as a pastry assistant in New York’s longest running famed restaurant/bakery, Bouley where she stayed for 2 1/2 years. (There are only 5 restaurants in NYC that have garnered a 4 star rating) It was there that she was able to work closely with renowned chefs Bill Yosses, Marc Aumont, and David Bouley. She worked mostly with Viennoiseries, Petit Fours, Entremets, Gateaux and Chocolate. In 2005, she had a brief stint in Magnolia Bakery where she worked closely with General Manager/Owner Barbara DiNicola.
Highland's Steakhouse finally in Mall of Asia!
I like the log cabin type of ambiance consistent with the Tagaytay Highland's interior design. It has a cozy tungsten lighted atmosphere complete with fireplace which should be perfect during the cold season. As for the food, all the food items we ordered were deliciously satisfying that we didn't mind paying for about P800/ person. Kudos to Highland's Steakhouse management for a job well done in providing a good steak experience immediately after its opening.
There are two private rooms that you can reserve complete with a log cabin ambiance (although this reminds me of a dry sauna interiors), and chandeliers to provide that tungsten lighted romantic setting.

Blue Lagoon Cove, Maira-Ira Beach, Pagudpud
Rate this post:
My ultimate motivation in going to Pagudpud was to see the once secret beach known as Blue Lagoon which is becoming popular lately. Saud beach is a nice place to stay but Blue Lagoon beach is the most beautiful beach in the North. The sand quality is not entirely white but it has an off white grainy quality that would be similar to the sand in Boat Station 3 in Boracay. The best thing about Blue Lagoon is that it is like one large blue swimming pool! The water is bluish, the entire sea is calm and the underwater floor is deep but purely sand. The cottages are exotic and you can rent a water cottage and have fun diving in the water. There are no resorts in the area which is good in the sense that you only go here to purely enjoy the beach. Downside is that you still have to drive an additional 20mins to and from the main Saud beach in Pagudpud. There is actually a resort near the place called Kapuluan Vista Resort and Constantine have some resort shots. Another thing, one of my criteria for a great beach is that the sun sets in the horizon, unfortunately, Blue Lagoon is situated where the sun sets behind its back covered by the mountains.
Overall, I love Blue Lagoon! We had a fun time having photo shoots and just enjoying the beach. Check out these photos...

Bangui Windmills [Flickr Phils North Expedition #1]
Rate this post:
This is a tribute to the 15 most beautiful white structures I've ever seen in the Philippines. I can't believe my eyes seeing for myself these 23 storey high windmills along the 3km Bangui Bay. They are so beautiful and I can't help myself but to shoot with awe and jump for joy. This is my humble attempt to capture the beauty of these structures. I was blessed with good weather and nice sky during my visit. The windmills of Bangui appears to be planted by aliens in the Ilocos Norte and the place is so surreal. The trip to Pagudpud just got better and you should not miss visiting these 2 year old wind turbines.
By the way, I'm starting a series on the first Road Trip of the local Flickr Philippines community last June 12 weekend. I can't help but post these awesome windmills first and share with you the beauty of the Bangui coast! Check out these Banqui windmill post cards...

The Bangui coast has a fishing community and it was nice to see all their colorful banca's parked along the shore.
This shot was taken on our way to the base of the windmills. I like this shot particularly because of the cows grazing in the foreground.
This is a perspective shot on how tall these structures are compared to the jeepney parked along the shores of Bangui.
Sometimes I like my shots saturated specially if the sky is clear. I like the play of blue, green and brown colors.
Up close and personal. This is the closest I can get and still being able to capture the entire windmill.
I wanted to capture the windmills lining up but I don't have the right angle for this shot.
I was literally jumping for joy when I saw these beautiful white structures!
Saying my final goodbyes and I can't wait to go back here to shoot during sunset :)
Don't be contented with just watching the windmills from the look out point. There is a road that leads to the windmills and this is the intersection before reaching pagudpud. There are no signs so make sure that you don't miss this intersection. Just ask around or the resort guides should be able to take you to the wind mills.

Our Awesome Planet Blog Traffic
Rate this post:
First, I would like to thank all my readers for constantly following my adventures and for referring my blog site to other people. I had a fun time blogging for the past 16 months and I'm glad that people appreciate some of the posts. I have constantly tracked my blog traffic via statcounter and last May was an all time high of 22,285 unique visitors in a month. That would be almost 700 visitors in a day mostly referred by google or organically referred by other blogs or loyal readers. I'm still planning to create a summary link or index page so that first time visitors can easily find contents in my blog.
One of my reasons for blogging is to showcase the Philippines as a tropical paradise and hopefully inspire people to appreciate our country a little bit more. Also, I do hope that I inspired other people to blog their adventures as well and as a token of appreciation, sharing with you some of my blogging secrets targeted to those people who want to start up their own blog about the Philippines or travel in general.
I'm continuing to hone my skills on travel writing and travel photography and one of these days I do hope to accomplish my dream of having my works published in printed media. I'm planning to sell my photos about the Philippines and start up my own Stock Photography pool dedicated to the tropical paradise of the Philippines. Lastly, I'm still dreaming about self publishing my book " Our Awesome Planet: Philippines " and I'm starting to look for sponsors to help me with it.
Thanks again, and please do let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can further improve my blog. It is not perfect but it is a start of hopefully something bigger.

Sango -- The Japanese Burger Master!
Rate this post:
Sango Master Cheeseburger (P98)
There is a new burger place in town which provides an alternative option for all burger lovers out there. I would not immediately associate japanese food with an american burger concept, that is why the first time I saw this I was skeptical. The Burger Master name sounded like a title from an anime cartoon, so the concept sounded weird at first. I was waiting for some people to rave about it and whipsmart's review was enough for me to try this out. The difference is in the special sauce (like a spaghetti sauce with too much onions) they put in their master cheeseburger which blends well with the thick tomato slice and the soft bun. It is deliciously addicting especially with the slice of cheese. We only tried the burgers but there are other options in the menu. It feels like a japanese version of Jollibee that caters to the taste buds of a japanese.
The verdict, the burgers are very good and you'll get it with a free origami! My only complaint is the poor exhaustion system inside the restaurant where if you stay too long inside, the aroma of the burger sticks to your clothes. This is similar to going to a fast food area in the malls where you would hate smelling as if you haven't put on any deodorant for the day. An option for those who doesn't want to smell would just to eat it outside the restaurant or just take out the food and hopefully, the food would still taste the same when you eat it at home.

The single beef patty looks like it was too small so you better opt for the double master burger (P128) or the with cheese version (P148). I know it is expensive but it is worth to try specially the master version.
There are other fast food menu items available including rice burgers and shakes which is worth noting.
Also, we tried the goboh salad for P58 and it is very small, taste ordinary and it is not worth it. If you opt not to try the goboh salad, they also offer the usual salad for P48 with the same size.
The place really caters to the Japanese community so there are a lot of Japanese reading materials instead of your usual inquirer newspaper and other magazines.
Interesting concept of having an LCD screen showing Japanese shows or anime cartoons to attract the family.
Can you go wrong with a japanese burger place frequented by japanese? The restaurant has a simple interior design accented by origami.

I'm fascinated at the way Myron's created a blogging buzz with Lori originally blogging about it with her post "Want steak? Go to Myron's". Marketman followed with "Myron’s at Rockwell" and "Plum and Grape Shakes" posts. How can a restaurant create a blogging buzz so fast with key foodie bloggers blogging it within a month's time? Unfortunately, the comments about Myron's are mixed and I have a theory that food reviews can influence your taste bud. We visited here during Father's Day weekend with my friends who make it a point to try out new restos every month. Despite mixed reviews, I tried it out and even had a chance to meet with Mon Eusebio who owns the place. He was very concerned with the mixed comments, and I was glad that they are trying their best to improve it. I will be concerned too specially if it's your father's in law name that is at stake here and the reputation of the family of chefs catering to important people and taipan's in the society.
The Verdict. The food is unique and very good. My only complaint was how expensive it was but that is another story. This restaurant is less than two months old located in Rockwell ground floor restaurant area, and this is certainly a place that I would go back to treat my parents during special dinner occasion. I would like to certainly contribute to the blogging buzz and give my 2 cents worth on the Myron's experience. Certainly, we are now seeing the age of alternative media in the Philippines with blogging being able to influence your view about a certain place or restaurant. All bloggers are not paid to do it, and the power of blogging is in the personalities of people who blogs about their passions, creates a credibility and following built over time. You can agree or disagree to it and there is no perfect food review. But if you have Lori and Marketman blogging about it and certainly that is a good restaurant to try out!
This is my own experience at Myron's...

Lori was right, the rockefeller was very good!! In fact, my friends also ordered the Oysters with Citrus Granita and it was also a hit! Marketman also raved about the oyster granita and need I say more? I did not try the fresh one because I'm not into it. You won't get wrong with Oysters here which is according to Mon, they are sourced fresh from Capiz. My dad would definitely love this.
This one got mixed reviews and was compared negatively with Tony Roma's ribs. I personally was not able to taste it but it sure looks good to me.
Paolo Steak (P495). 5 ounces of Grilled US Certified Angus Rib Eye of Beef.
We decided to order the entry level steak which is the Paolo as they would call it. The steak was delicious and tasty -- it was very good. This steak was thinly sliced and sometimes when you order a steak you would expect that thickness to be present in your medium well steak. I think next time we will order the Myron's choice with Foie Gras and decide to split it among us to really get that taste of that unique Myron Steak experience. Another reason to go back...
Myron's New Menu.
Mon Eusebio's claim to fame is the Angus Roast Beef Belly which they sold in Salcedo Market. I had a chance to talk to the guy and learned a lot about their restaurant business history on how they started off Katips among others. They are a family of chefs so you can just imagine their desire to give a very good experience to everybody in the midst of the mixed reviews.
We reserved this corner spot and I think this is the best place for a dinner conversation here at Myron's
Overall, where can you get a great steak, great oysters, salad with miso vinaigrette and red plum shake all in one place? Only at Myron's!! It was a great eating experience for us and people might not agree but that is perfectly fine. My last comment was it costs us P650/head inclusive of 10% service charge and 12% VAT -- ouch!! I'm going back one of these days again to try out the other dishes I missed and this time with my parents :)
So have you been @ Myron's? Please share your experience...

This is my personal account of the Mt. Gulugod Experience Climb.
Along the hiking trail, you will be greeted with a welcome stare from the cows of Mt. Gulugod Baboy. So it should not be a surprise if the trail is full of landmines (cow dung) which fills the air with its aroma mixed with the smell of the forest.
One of our teammates, Lawrence, was very exhausted and he needed an extra feet using the tree trunk just to barely stand up. Phew, this was not an easy climb.
At the halfway point, as we rest, Robert the climb master pointed towards the highest tip of Mt. Gulugod baboy. We cannot believe that we planned to hike all the way up there and reaching it, would be a fulfilling accomplishment for the first timers.
A black cow greets you as you enter the foot of Mt. Gulugod Baboy. We were told that these cows can be dangerous at times, so we proceeded to pass with caution.
We started our ascent. It was a grueling ascent to the top and the steep slope reminds you that you need to get back into shape.
Finally, I arrived and exclaimed my first words at the top, " Yoohoo!" which a bit similar to Romi's first words on top of Mt. Everest. This was the camp site for the night and we have to set our tents fast because we can see that the dark clouds are fast approaching. The site was clean of debris but there were a lot of dried cow dungs which did not bother us as the night goes by.

Myron's Blogging Buzz
Paolo Steak (P495). 5 ounces of Grilled US Certified Angus Rib Eye of Beef.
Mesclun Salad with seared sesame crusted Ahi-tuna and Miso Dressing (P220). This was the best seller in the house because of their delicious Miso dressing. Story has it that the dressing was first made available in the Salcedo Market and it became an instant hit! Two of our friends are raving about this salad, and for me personally, I think there is something wrong with the vegetables or maybe it was the tuna.
Baked Oyster Rockefeller (P295).
US Baby Back Ribs with Mustard Bourbon Sauce (P495).
Surf and Turf Kebabs (P350). This was a good value for your money and it is very good. At this point, I don't understand why this restaurant got mixed reviews in the first place. Maybe it could be supplier issues and I'm glad I went here after 7 weeks of operation :)
I liked the assortment of their food. My dad would love this place because he would have all his favorite food all in one place! By the way, I forgot to try out the Red Plum which was suppose to be one of the many favorites in the drinks menu.
[MtGulugodBaboy #2] A glimpse of a Mt. Gulugod Baboy Climb!
Mt. Gulugod Baboy is a popular level 1 climb as UP Mountaineering would call it and is located in the heart of Anilao, Batangas. It is also becoming popular as what people call a night trek spot where you climb the mountain at night with only headlamps and the one in front of you as your guide. These social climbs are becoming popular and what is good about Mt. Gulugod baboy is that you can reward yourself afterwards with a nice swim in the beach resorts of Anilao :) This was my first climb and it was an awesome mountain climbing experience organized by the premier Mountain Climbing organization in the Philippines, UP Mountaineering which produced Romi Garduce, and the premier Jaycee organization in the Philippines, Manila Jaycees!
Our jumpoff point was the Arthur's resort in Anilao which was a more challenging trail to Mt. Gulugod Baboy. There is an easier trail with a jumpoff point at the Philpan resort and this is where the night climbs usually starts. Since it was our first time to climb for most of us, UP Mountaineering team decided to start at the mid point of the paved trail. We drive through this narrow one lane road towards the forest of the mountain. What surprises us was that despite the steep winding road along the mountain, the roads were paved. We got excited as we drove up and from the road and was already seeing the anilao waters with sombrero island as a horizon landmark.
Robert Leoncio was our climb master and we started the trek with proper stretching and prayers. We parked our car in the sari-sari store by the basketball court and it was a safe parking spot according to the UP mountaineers. We only have one lady in the group, Babes, who was part of our UP mountaineering guide and the rest are all boys coming from Manila Jaycees.
The trail cuts across a community and these are the typical houses that you would see along the route. We were reminded by our guides that safety cannot be compromised and don't leave anything behind in the mountain. Even the trash we generated in the climb, we had to bring it down.
At first everybody was excited for their first mountain climbing experience. We were still climbing our way through paved roads and through the community. At this point, the backpack weight was still bearable but as time went by, it become heavier and that is why the number one advice for people who is climbing the first time is "pack light". At first I thought it was a cliche, but after only a few minutes of hike, I kept on repeating the advice in my head and promised to follow the advice on my next climb.
Some of the trekkers, have nice hiking backpacks courtesy of Conquer which is a local brand competing against the likes of North Face. Most of them would have this standard all weather cover to protect the bags from the occasional rains.
After the paved road ended, we were faced with the rough trail and we now realized that this mountain climbing was for real. I thought that it was really an easy climb and the experience thought me never to underestimate a mountain ever again. I was wearing crocs during my trek and I'm glad that it surpassed the test of the mountain. I did not slipped or get into any accident with my crocs however, after a few weeks, I realized that my knees are hurting. Some of the climbers, even though they have hiking shoes, it was already brittle after years of being stored in the closet. Just imagine hiking shoes with a mouth and you'll get what I mean. It's a good thing that some people brought duct tapes to secure the hiking shoes.
Resting is a familiar scene specially for the smokers and for the first timers. At the start, a lot of people are taking pictures which gets less and less as the load of the backpack becomes heavier. It is important that your hands are free when you climb the mountain and you have a strong back to support your load not to mention one pair of strong legs and feet. I originally brought with me only a jansport bag and a plastic bag of 4 liters of water that I plan to bring along the trek. I'm glad that my friend, Gabby, insisted that I borrow the extra hiking bag of Babes, so that I can carry the 4 liters of water on my backpack.
I can't blame Mike for stopping and at this point I was exhausted too and we were not yet on the halfway of the trail. For the first hour of the trek, you would only see trees, forest, cows, and uninspired scenery. This was the boring part and it gets better as you find yourself halfway through the trail.
Finally, we arrived at the midpoint of the trek almost an hour after. We rested along a slope with a good view of Mt. Gulugod Baboy. Actually, I originally thought that we arrived already because this part already have a 360 degrees view of the surrounding mountains.
After 15 minutes of rest, we started to hike towards the summit. At this point, there were already a lot of jokes about Mount Everest, Sherpas, and how do you have a "big brother" confession session (if you know what I mean :).
This waiting shed is an important structure specially when it rains or during the middle of a hot summer day. Imagine this is the only cover you would have if it rains. As you can see from the profile of the mountain, there are not a lot of trees on the way up to the mountain peak.
Since I was playing badminton at least once a week, I thought that the hiking can be manageable but I found myself catching my breath and I already sounded like Darth Vader. I was truly out of shape and this experience reminded me of the importance of endurance and exercising frequently.
This was the scene of Top of Mt. Gulugod Baboy. Robert was encouraging us that it would only take a few more step and this was the steepest slope that I ever climbed in my entire life (hehe, since it was my first time :).
Finally, the cows of Mt. Gulugod Baboy, would congratulate you for a successful climb.
This was my Mt. Gulugod Baboy summit picture, as customary to every climb. I survived just wearing my favorite green crocs and my lucky favorite blue nike sphere shirt. Overall, the climb took us about 2.5 hours to reach the Mt. Gulugod Baboy peak. Thanks to UP mountaineering and Manila Jaycees for this exciting experience. Yoohoo!!

[MtGulugodBaboy # 1] Confessions of a Virgin Climber
Rate this post:
Mt. Gulugod Baboy climb was my first mountain climbing experience. I underestimated it and my shots were uninspired. I'm a virgin climber and the experience was almost orgasmic when you reached the top. This was my own little version of Mt. Everest climb and will all the hype surrounding Mountain Climbing in the Philippines, this is the next sports fad after billiards, and badminton.
I've blogged about Romi Garduce's climb for almost a year now, and I was struck by one of the comments of my blog readers that I should climb mountains first to have credibility in writing about mountain climbing. It made sense and ever since I've been looking for an opportunity to do so. What would you have if you have the best mountaineering organization in the Phils. -- UP Mountaineering as your guide and the best Jaycee chapter in the Phils. -- Manila Jaycees as your companions in the climb? an Awesome Mt. Gulugod Baboy Climb!!
I must admit that I underestimated the climb. I was not excited because I thought it was easy and I thought there was nothing to do on top of the mountain other than to drink all night long. It was raining the day before, so I thought this was not the best time to have a photo shoot. I did not prepare for it. I literally drag my feet and was thinking twice about pushing through with it or just offer an excuse not to go. I'll tell you how unprepared I was...

1). I don't have hiking shoes and I did not bother to buy one. I wore my favorite green crocs which is now my constant travel companion.
2). I brought a jansport bag to the climb and thinking that I'll just carry 4 liters of water in a plastic bag to the climb. Big mistake.
3). I did not bother to bring my tripod making an excuse in my head that people kept on saying "travel light". Another Big mistake.
4). I was not looking forward to swimming after the climb so I just brought one extra shorts and did not bring my swimming gear.
5). It was recommended to bring a head lamp, but instead I brought one of this long heavy black flashlights which I was not able to use.
6). No sleeping bag. I thought that it was just one overnight anyway and I can get away with just a piece of cloth as my bed.
7). I left my raincoat and it rained very hard during sunset. I always told myself to bring my raincoat, rain or shine during my adventures but I argued in my head that I'll just stay inside the tent or bahala na.
8). I lot of people say that Mt. Gulugod baboy was a level 1 mountain climbing, an inaugural climb of sorts, and hence I assumed it was easy. My only experience before this was a day hike to Mt. Makulot and a day hike up the Taal Volcano. I regretted this and Mt. Gulugod baboy taught me not to underestimate the mountain.
I'm glad that I was able to get these confessions out of the way. I did not realize before the climb that this is one of my best outdoor experience! It was so addicting that I cannot wait for the next climb.
Thanks to the UP Mountaineering Group for sharing with us the joy of Mountain Climbing! Thanks to the Manila Jaycees for this awesome Mountain Climbing Experience!!

Pacquiao Larios Fight Ticket Prices -- Outrageous!
Rate this post:
I break my blog silence to complain about the outrageous ticket prices for the Pacquiao vs. Larios Mano a Mano fight this coming July 2. Sorry for this rant but this is unbelievably the most expensive prices ever for a live show in the Philippines! Tickets are available via ticketnet and was recently released last Monday, June 12. Check out these prices -- totally outrageous at P31,680 for a ring side ticket and I thought before that the F4 concert with P20,000+ ring side ticket was already crazy at that time.
Mano A Mano, Pacquiao vs Larios
Pilipinas vs Mexico
Manny Pacquiao versus Oscar Larios
Venue: Araneta Coliseum
Event Date/Time:
July 2, 2006 | Sunday at 8:00am
Seat and Price:
Patron (Reserved Seating) - 31, 680
Lower Box (Reserved Seating) - 21,120
Upper Box A (Reserved Seating) - 7, 920
Upper Box B (Free Seating) - 2,640
I can't believe it myself and if you buy via credit card there is still a 5% surcharge. Inspite of this, I still bought two Upper Box B tickets at P2,772 as a gift for my dad on father's day. He loves Manny. I was kinda guilty when he asked me for a SM cinema ticket for Manny's last fight when he knocked out Morales last January 2006 and with all my powers, I was not able to get a ticket on the last minute. So this time around, I'm giving him the gift of watching Manny Pacquiao live in Manila. But still, the prices are unbelievably high and there were reports that general admin tickets are sold for P1,000 but manny wants to slice it down so that it could be affordable to the filipino people.
So how much would you pay for a world class fight of Manny Pacquiao live in Manila?

Cyma in Manila!! Opa!!
Rate this post:
O-pa!! Cyma is now in Manila and for anyone who have been to this bora resto favorite (see related article: Top 5 Bora Resto), you can't help but it but to say O-pa!! Opa is a greek cheer and it is such a happy greeting that would make you feel at home in this 2 week old resto in Edsa Shangrila Mall. In Bora, it is hidden inside d'mall and sometimes you'll get lucky to be eating with famous people, actors/ actresses, who frequent this greek restaurant. This is indeed a "flourishing" resto as its name suggest in greek, and anybody can attest that the food is great :) Although the food are a bit on the expensive side and not to mention that they increased the prices by 10% in their mall outlet.
These days, there is almost no reason for you to go to Edsa Shangrila mall with the Edsa and mall traffic. I would prefer to go to Mall of Asia than meet somebody in Edsa Shang Mall. At least in Mall of Asia, once you figure out the technique of how to park and navigate your way through the maze, then it would be a pleasant experience for you. (Note: only on weekdays :) But Edsa Shang gave me enough good reason to brave the Edsa traffic and park on the 6th floor cinema level with its steep long winding road just to enjoy the dishes of Cyma. This is a good way to satisfy your Cyma craving rather than waiting for summer next year to fly to Bora. By that time, we would have moved on to the next resto fad in bora.
Technorati Tags: Manila, Philippines, Restaurants
Demistyfying Mezedes Combination (P290). It's english translation is "appetizers" and Greeks traditionally start their meals with these little treats they call mezedes. This is a sample platter of their four appetizers.
1). Tzatziki (P105). The classic cucumber and yogurt dip served either Mild or Strong Garlic. Not a good idea if you are on a date.
2). Melitzanosalata (P95). Freshly roasted eggplant tomatoes, garlic, fresh lemon and EVOO (not sure what this is, would anybody know?)
3). Hummous (P100). Velvety chickpea, tahini and garlic dip.
4). Htipiti (P120). Feta Cheese, cream cheese, roasted spicy pepper and EVOO.
The verdict. I've order this both in the mall outlet and the bora resto and only the Htipiti feta cheese appetizer stands out. Check out the Tzatziki of Manos Taverna in Tagaytay and this would pale in comparison. The hummous was disappointing and the Cafe Mediteranean was a lot better. The eggplant appetizer is OK. Next time I would only order the Htipiti which is a lot cheaper only P120 vs. the mezedes at P290. By the way you can order extra pita for P25.
Spinach and Artichoke Fondue (P250). Only P230 in Bora but this dish is a winner! O-pa!! The melting cheese, sliced sun dried tomato and feta blended very well which makes the CPK spinach and artichoke dip version taste ordinary. This is more of a dip than a fondue which brings up images of Old Swiss Inn's famous fondue desserts. The dip goes very well with the garlic bread instead of the pita.
Unfortunately, there were only three of us when we ate so we cannot order Cyma's Chef recommended Chicken Gyro, the Pastisado (Greek Osso Bucco), Sayanaki (flaming cheese) ; or Cyma's in-demand signature dish, the Cyma Lamb Chops. I plan to go back soon and this is a good place during Father's day.
Flaming Mango Dessert (P180). Anything flaming is interesting and that's why we ordered this dessert with matching O-pa cheer as it is served to your table. Kudos to Cyma for the innovation on this dessert which costs us P180!! Unfortunately, they used a whole mango with its seed still intact which actually destroyed the appeal of this dessert. It is good and you should immediately taste it right after the vanila ice cream is put on top of the flaming mango. It taste like fire and ice melting with the sweetness of Mango.
This is an ambiance shot of this small outlet in Cinema Level Edsa Shangrila Mall, Ortigas.
You know what, this is really a perfect place for a Father's day celebration on June 18, and after a Cyma meal we'll give our father's day gift of a ringside ticket to the Pacquiao - Larios Fight on July 2. Just sharing with you this tip, I know my dad is not reading my blog and feel free to reapply :)
Here is the number: CYMA GREEK RESTO, Shangrila Mall @ +632 6373090.
